This seems interesting, but I don't want to read through over 30 pages to figure out what's going on. I assume that Ken is some writer that left years ago that's been acting really immature and demanding the rights to the Archie Sonic comic? Is there any better summary with more detail?

That's basically it, although I'm not sure if he left or was fired. Besides that, all there is to know is that he was responsible for a lot of the shittier storylines in the series.

Ok you know how 2006 is the shitstain of the entire game franchise and no matter how well you do afterwards your allways reminded of that?

Penders is like that for the comics. Bastard left a scar as big and deep as 2006 did.

I've just read that distribution of the latest Knuckles Archives volume has been halted "due to copyright troubles".

Might have something to do with Ken Penders...

Yeah, pretty much. Penders' butt-monkeys(BobR, PaulAgnew) over at his forums have been gloating about it this morning. From what I've gathered Pender's legal team has given archie's distributors a "Cease and Desist" of some sort claiming they're distributing material that doesn't belong to archie. This is a very sneaky and underhanded tactic.

If this is the case, it won't look good in court next week. Pender's has already been in trouble for enforcing 'his' copyrights despite the case still being ongoing.

Yeah, I'm actually very surprised. From some of the information released by the courts, Penders is faring much better than any of us really would have expected. He has a couple of previous writers/artists supporting him, and at this point it seems like a stale-mate is going on, with Archie wining some things, and Penders winning others. The courts threw out Archie's asking for a summary judgement and their paperwork on Pender's contract work, which had discrepancies. Penders had to pay Archie $13k in legal fees for missing a deadline, and both sides have been asked to attempt a settlement (Can't link this info, but A Moment of Archie Sonic's tumblr talks a bit about it).

As surprising as it sounds, I think Penders may actually now stand chance, which blows my mind.

BobR finally explains what's going on:

BobR said:

This is not meant to win any fans. Archie is playing a game of attrition. They are forcing Ken to spend monies he really doesn't have, all the while selling new versions of the very same materials he created to let them keep their side funded, essentially turning Ken's own property against him. This is the first step to cut them off from that supply, forcing them to use their own money.

So, basically, this is to cut off Archie's funds for the case...which stopping publication of the Archives won't do, especially this far in. Ken, this may well be your lamest plan yet. You're barely denting Archie's funds, and just pissing people off more. Way to go.

EDIT: Oh look. Now Bob's misreading responses. People pointed out that this is hardly a financial dent for the case, and he starts going on about how if Ken wins, Archie will be fined millions in copyright violations, completely ignoring that this would only be after the case anyway (with this ploy being to defund them before the case is over), and ignoring that if Ken wins this small dent in funds would kind of happen anyway, and Ken would essentially be saving Archie on fines if he won by stopping this. What a thoughtful guy.

Apparently Ken's team thinks they can shut down Archie now.

Quote

Financial analysts have placed Archie Comic Publications net worth at between $20 to 40 million, total, depending on when they looked at it and what numbers they use. That's not a very big company. And given the number of willful violations incurred since they were duly notified in 2010, even at the lowest fine possible by law, it's still in 7 figures. That's a sizable portion of the company. If the courts use the highest award figure…well, there is no Archie anymore.

I wish I could have some of what they're smoking. Someone ask them to hook me up with their dealer.

It looks like Mr. Penders has created his own movie studio called "Floating Island Productions". He's making some real masterpieces, folks!

First up, THE LOST ONES, which is supposed to be a full movie.

Quote

They could be your friends, your neighbors, your lovers. They could be famous, or an unknown, rich, or poor. They are: The Lost Ones.

Descendants borne of the original survivors of the atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II, they are either the next phase of human evolution or nature's sadistic retribution against the folly of man's war machine. For each Lost One possesses a singular power whether that be the ability to hold armies at bay, infiltrate the tightest security, or survive in any environment from the deepest ocean to the airless void of outer space.

Security was tight at Los Alamos during World War II. All resources were being directed towards one large weapon that would create the largest explosion ever generated by man. So it was easy to get funding to study the effects on those survivors of the first two atomic blasts used against a general populous. Afterall, the effects of that much radiation was still unknown. But as the second generation was born with no visible differences, the study was abandoned. Except for one lone individual who kept watch, checking those on whom he could keep track. But many more were lost over the years, moved to all corners of the globe and married into many different races and ethnicities. Then, with the third generation, things changed.

From the mind of Ken Penders, author, artist, producer, and director, comes THE LOST ONES with a single question: Can they and normal humans live together in harmony, or will one destroy the other? And who else might be, a Lost One?

R U 1, 2?

And if that wasn't enough, he's also directing a webseries called The Republic.

Quote

Ask yourself this question, "What would America become if extremists on both the left and right got their way in everything?"

This is what happens in. . . THE REPUBLIC

Set a few years in our future, various extremist agendas have been codified into law. The new Freedom of Commerce, Life, Information, Education, Taxation, and other Freedom Acts mean "security and freedom" for everyone, because nothing is regulated, but everything is controlled.

All media are monitored and government-approved: Internet, radio, newspapers, publishing. Abortion is illegal, punishable by death. Church attendance and baptism are mandatory. Divorce is illegal. Government "interference" with commerce is gone: no food or water inspections, no drug approvals, no price restrictions. Military service is compulsory. Public education is underfunded until it collapses, so only private religious schools continue. ID cards report your every move: being caught without a card is a crime. All immigrants, green-card and illegal, are expelled along with their children. War in the Middle East sparks riots in Europe, but details are sketchy. Self-appointed Neighborhood Patrols enforce curfews and morals. Justice is for the rich and party members. Indoctrination splits kids from parents.

Starting on January 1st of a new year, America wakes to a changed land. The Alden family - Frank, Martha, John, Pam, Peter, and Katie - were apolitical. But as the year progresses and repression grows, tragedy strikes the family in unexpected ways. Finally galvanized, the family decides to fight back.

But how? And is it too late?

$40 Million US net worth? Really? While not impossible, that is extremely unlikely considering the success of both the Archie and Sonic series, as well as the number of years they've been in the business for. unless there's something in writing that can back up what these guys are saying, $40 million seems like a very miscalculated estimate.

and @Gene: It's Mary Jane laced with crack cocaine. a combo that Bobby Brown used to smoke heavily during the 90's and early '00s. Maybe he gave Ken his stash when he went sober? :v:

I personally prefer "Dream on, moon unit!" from the full episode.

Enjoy.

Ah the good ol CAD order. How many more of these dipshit instances have to happen for genuine copyright reform in the US?

You know, I don't get Penders, from the look of things he can do and get other work and stuff, I don't see why he's bothering with the whole Archie Sonic lawsuit bullshit. If he wanted to do a different take on the comic and do his own thing he could have did a pitch with Archie, or hell just release it for free for his fans (what's left of them that is), this whole thing is just a waste of time that could have been easily solved with a couple of pitches and calls, but no, we have this shit going on that's been delayed for god knows how long. Also I'd fire his legal team, they sound like they are WAY over their heads, and out of their minds.

Does Sega have any role in this at all since some of what Penders did was a bunch of Palette Swap the Echidna?
