I think this might be another case where a 3D model would come in handy, for making the rotating pieces.

I'd be entirely happy if they didn't spin. Having them simply break apart feels more classic.

...Then let's break it into squares instead? =\

I'm saying it wouldn't really add anything. I not against spinning, it's just not needed in my opinion.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Sonic 2 HD Flash Edition.

Not sure if you understood something else, but I meant spinning in a 3D space (3 axis rotations), hence the mention of a 3D model.

I don't know what a Flash game could have to do with this.

By the way, while that you're talking about breakable objects in HTZ, don't forget about this:

Maximus maybe could help.

I think that if a 3D model is used, we can redraw them in vector to fit the original rock style, but get the right shadows and all while the pieces are rotating, and get that spinning 3D feelings that I think Sonic 4 gets when those Splash Hill breaking wall blocks are flying in all directions. Now I have never seen it in action, so I am hoping a video of Sonic 4 will be available soon.

The other way is to make it like Sonic 2 (tiny square blocks of the original stone), or Sonic 3 (more realistic tiny stones). I am more against using Sonic 3's way as it is a more realistic.

perhaps something like

though obviously there'd be less blocks

Those could stay like that and there wouldn't be a problem, but turning those into cubes or something (after they're broken) and adding a spinning rotation might be neat, but not completely necessary.

TBH, wouldn't you say the main reason why they broke up in squares was because of graphical limitations, rather than because it looked good?

S2HD doesn't have that limitation, so I'd say we can be more creative when it comes to breaking chunks out of rock.

Well we could say that about the rock, but the ground is obviously a design choice. Ground objects breaking into squares was used in all or at least a lot of the old games.

Well I was thinking of something like what subsubstantive did - if that was how you'd imagine it in pieces:

Yes I do realize that you meant for them to be spinning in 3D. I was in a rush so I didn't allow myself time to proof read. Let me reiterate:

I'm saying it wouldn't really add anything. I not against spinning, it's just that the work involved is not worth the minor detail.

Or maybe my ideal vision of Sonic 2 HD would end up making the game look like a flash game. I dunno...

Funnily enough though, I actually agree with the others' feeling about turning the square breakable blocks into spinning cubes. It'd look tacky to have one and not the other so I'm now for having the stone break into 3D spinning blocks.

I as well am for 3D spinning blocks, similar to Sonic 4, with the same vectors as the classic Sonic 2... as far as the ground breaking is concerned. I am curious to see what segmented stone looks like when it breaks apart. They do not necessarily need to be the same btw, the ground and the rock. They can break differently, the ground has always looked as to be made of blocks, whereas that blue stone, while blocky seems to be somewhat more organic.
