QUOTE (Hayate @ Jun 6 2010, 10:55 PM)
Gameplay wise... I savestated a fuckton. =P
To be honest, me too. I did the special stage for over a half year now and I still need save states, so don't worry 'bout that.

QUOTE
though, perhaps it would be a nice touch if the background scrolling reversed direction when you hit a checkpoint, to fit the travel direction.
Actually a nice idea, why not!

QUOTE
I'm not sure what was up with the spikes though, some were instant death, others only cost me 10 rings. Maybe it's just that the Super-ish Sonic dies on contact with spikes? Also, the death animation is quite weird, and a lot of times, like when I was "fighting" the crabmeat boss as SS, I just pretty much bounced around the screen in the death animation for ages not having a clue what was going on, and all of a sudden he dies and I'm back to normal. =\
Special Stages were a nice concept too. If I were more patient, I'd definitely play through them.
Maybe I should some level summary splash screen for each act, so people know what's going on without needing to read through the topic. But because it's you, I'll tell you again (=P):
I call this "Inhuman mode" or "Inhuman Sonic". It pretty much works like Hyper Sonic, with the only difference, you are invinicible against every-fucking-thing. Instead of just nothing happening, you fly up though. It's actually using the death system without really killing Sonic. In MZ however, you need to pay rings for being in that mode and the number reduces pretty fast when you are standing on the ground. Besides that, rather than being invinicible, spikes kill you immeadtly there.

QUOTE
If this doesn't win something in this year's hacking contest (don't you dare say you're not entering it =P ) then I won't know what to think!

And I hope you'll continue with this and release another version with more levels and more bosses, that would be great.
Heh, thanks and of course I will. =)

Anyone would need savestates in the SSes, I'm talking about normal gameplay. =P

That said, now that I've played through, I think I would be okay without savestates everywhere apart from the MZ inhuman section and the final boss.

If you do, make it optional, and default off! Having something like that would butcher the level progression. One of the best things about this hack IMO is the lack of results screens.

How about being crushed or falling in bottomless pits? :p

Yeah, I noticed that the second time I got there. It's a nice feature.

Maybe you should color the MZ spikes differently though to indicate the instant death. Also, why not have one of those respawn chambers in that section too?

After beating the game, the special stages became their normal layout but still non-moving. [LINK] While I liked this rom hack for the most part, I hated zone 5. >_> Also, that took a fuckload of hits to kill Robotnik at the end. o_O

Edit-

Just FYI, I beat the final boss on my second attempt. I dunno why so many people felt it was hard.

That's because he's only got the custom layouts up for the first few special stages, the rest are the normal Sonic 1 layout with the non-rotating system implemented.

Something I just noticed... The boss music you used, it's a remix of the Chaos Angel Zone music from Sonic Advance 3, isn't it? Awesome, that's my favorite music from that game :D

I am impressed, and I am disappointed, at the exact same time with this hack, there is a brilliant piece of work that is let down by the disappointed issues I feel are necessary to a hack/game.

I see some brilliant programming skills used here, some of which have been produced with some excellent ideas and gimmicks, a lot of impressive cut-scenes that I never thought I'd see possibly used for a Sonic flatform game, such as being chased by an increasingly destructive buzzbomber where you'd suddenly end up being slung into the air and then into a large ring, ready to start the level. Some decent puzzels too such as the Labyrinth Zone level, where the bottom of the screen locks into a positional place based on where the position of sonic's landing is, there would appear to be some incredibly brilliant planning in the sight of puzzels, cut-scenes and bosses, some of the things I've never witnessed before.

I am actually supprised why you are not part of the Tech Member family.

Of course, one thing that keeps me from enjoying this hack which infact is more of a personal issue (Although it still can be taken into account). Where's the heart? Where's the style? Where's the direction? This is a very confusing hack, with no sense made possible, I'm aware that Sonic being an anthropomorphic hedgehog fighting an evil scientist in order to save a planet full of animals and chaos emeralds (with other addition amount of things) don't make sense in the first place, but this takes the royal cake. It lacks feeling, design and style, the levels don't look as if they're suppose to be anything. It feels unconfortable, pretty messy and unorganised. And that prevents me from enjoying it while playing. Although I'm aware that the hack is not really suppose to be anything, now would be a great time to give it a direction, transfer what you have into a valid... er, something. (as I don't know what it's suppose to be, I cannot recommend anything)

And that will be my criticism for the day, the parts which may seem offending are just my personal opinions and not to be taken too seriously at all, keep up the good work on the programming and idea side of things though, they're brilliant.

I totally get you. Actually, I was thinking about getting rid of some things to get into some direction for this hack. On the other side I was thinking about my only "goal" again, making this a totally random hack. I feel like I've gone a little too far with it though. v.png

Anyway, I felt like doing a walkthrough for the new Labyrinth Zone, showing how to get through it. If you are still confused, just keep 2 things in mind:
1: Rings show you the wrong way. Always take the path without rings.
2: When you see a lonley 1up monitor in a room, you screwed up and need to kill yourself.

I may ask, what is the invincibility music? I swear I've heard it before. Also, it seems to have an off drumbeat.

Random question - why is there a starpost right before the end of act sign in the Labyrinth 2 level? =P

That's a music that was also used in Rika Chou' hack for the Gigapolis zone. Could someone answer the question coz I'm curious as well to know where that theme come from

Yes, it's Dangerous Seed's ending theme, along with some voice modifications by SOTI.

You may noticed that with every starpost you touch, the vertical scrolling type changes. To get the "normal" style again (with the bottomless pits) I had to place a starpost just before the end. Besides that, you might noticed that the giant ring shows up, even though you don't have 50 rings. This means, you MUST jump into, rather than going down or else you will die. =P
