According to the news websites, classification boards are now coming out with age ratings for After Burner Climax, which would suggest that Sega has finally ported the game. The word on the street points to it being a PSN/XBLA release only, which blows because I <3 physical media. However, it's still great to see that this is on the way home.

If you're a philistine who never visits arcades, this game will almost certainly have passed by you unnoticed. It's a sequel to the old After Burner games, and like them it is a simple rail shooter. Idiots would say that there's no skill involved, but they are wrong. Despite the massive graphical improvements, the game plays extremely similarly to After Burner II. Besides a new scoring system based on chaining lock-ons, the main difference of note in Climax is the addition of Climax Mode, which slows time and gives you tons of missiles. The arcade version also comes in some darn fancy motion cabinets which give a lovely physical edge to your game. Unfortunately, it was designed for Japanese players and as a result JohnnyUK and Ultima may remember me hitting my head on the damned cabinet. Twice.

The good news for you is that you don't live in an After Burner Climax cabinet, and there's no danger of you hitting your head on one when you finish playing the game at home. There's no need for you to be put off by potential head injuries when the home version is released, and therefore I would recommend that you try it out.

Fuck, I'm buying this first day it's out on PSN.

Maybe they'll use Sixaxis? Could be nifty...

I'm very much interested in this, and if I had a system of my own I would totally do this already.

YES! I wanted to play this game since I first saw it.
Here's a video of the arcade version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDTSApDzy3Y
The price will be 800 MS Points/$10

I played it on an arcade machine one month ago. It was awesome.

I've played this in an arcade once, and once isn't nearly enough. This game was fucking awesome when I played it and this is going to be a day 1 buy for me on XBLA.

So here's 8 minutes of gameplay:

And one fucking kickass remix of the ABII theme that reminds me of F-ZERO GX:

I love the AfterBurner series, and I'm actually considering buying a G-LOC Arcade Cabinet from a closed down arcade here.

As epic as this was in the arcade when I played it (and I even contemplated buying the machine for it), I think it'll lose a lot of the awesomeness about it, due to not having a vibrating moving seat. Those seat motions along with the impact vibrations whenever you took a hit really made this game something special. Without them, it's pretty much just Afterburner in HD, not that that's a bad thing.

To me, After Burner Climax is the model video game, the single most representative instance of the medium.

Yes. In fact, this is the third thread about the XBLA/PSN release now.
