A while back, I was at a gas station subway with my sister during lunch break at work. As we were standing in line waiting to get our failed creations that Subway creates, a particular chime caught my ear. I could swear that for a second, I had heard the sound of a ring being collected.

Dsimissing it as needing to get away from you guys more often, I went back to getting my delicious breadstick with a side of one slice of meat, when I heard it again. Curiosity now fully piqued, I looked around wondering whadafu that noise was, when my head caught on a register drawer closing to the sound of a ring. There was obviously a joke about collecting rings here, but I was too mildly surprised to come up with one.

I treated that as an isolated incidant, but now I have begun noticing it happening in a few other convenient stores around here. And the sound is definitley the same one from Sonic. Has anyone else happened to hear this from registers recently, or has this been isolated to my small state of New Hampshire?

As long as no one cites the Fairly Odd Parents....

As far as the sound goes, it's an extremely generic sound. Anything close to it, and your ear will hear what it wants to hear at the point, especially if it's on your mind.

On our road trip through Montana and a whole bunch of states I can't remember, I heard it too, in fact, it sound exactly like the Sonic Advance ring collect SFX. (Yes, I tested it. :P)

The local Mobil SuperPantry station just a few blocks away from where I live here in Illinois have registers that make the ring noise when something is rang up. I noticed it about a year ago when they updated their pumps and other electronic crap. The other stations around here (Casey's, Hucks, and Thornton's) don't have the effect, so I'm wondering if it's only Mobil gas stations that have it.

I think that the ring sound is in your brain and you asociate it with the register cash sound.

It is kind of funny how recognizable the ring sound is. It's a real icon. Often when I play a Sonic rom of some sort on my PSP, random people will say "Is that a ring?" and come over to see what I'm playing.

Or you know Sonic could be real... v.png Really I think it's just that your brain is so use to playing Sonic that when you hear a cash register, you think of the SFX from the game.

The theory on associating it with Sonic sounds would be accurate if not for the fact that it does in fact sound exactly like the sonic ring sound. There's a distinctive pitch you get from collecting a ring in the Sonic Adventure games, and it matches perfectly. If it was a case of me wanting it to sound like the ring collecting sound, then it wouldn't have been like that the first time I heard it when it wasn't expected.

My local Mobil has the ring sound. I've noticed it for about a year now. It is absolutely the ring sound and if I must, I will go there and record the sound next time I am there.

I can say that I'm positive it's the same sound, as I've heard it numerous times before. The first time I heard it I thought someone was playing Sonic somewhere nearby, but it turned out to by the register. My sister who doesn't even play Sonic recognized it as well. I have no proof other than memory, however...

But I know it's not our imaginations. =P

Honestly when I think "cash register" I think the sound at the end-of-act score tally.

I think Super Adventure Island used a similar one, for what it's worth.

I'm going to stop at a Mobil tomorrow and buy something, to see if it happens at that one.
