Epic Games recently launched a free edition of their Unreal Engine 3 game engine, known as the Unreal Development Kit. It's a fully featured binary-only version of Unreal Engine 3, and it comes with a stripped down demo of UT3 as an example game, and the associated example content.
It has all of the features of the current version of Unreal Engine 3 (currently at 3.5, with their LightMass technology, and their new dynamic shadow system). It's totally free for non-commercial use, however for commercial use, it's $99 for a royalty supported license (no royalties are applied for the first $5000 of revenue), or $2,500 for a single development seat. Bring on the shitfest of lame half baked 3D sonic fan games that don't even take advantage of the technology, faggots. (brb, restarting development of "Sonic XN: Oh god please, just no, not again, why do I continue to care about this project") |

It has all of the fancy new lighting they were showing off at GDC09 and everything. |

If they've managed to do that, then porting it to UDK wouldn't be too problematic for them (there's even a UT3 "demo" that comes with it, to show off the new features of UE3.5 in a familiar game). |

I dunno about a Sonic game, but the first person to make a classic Quake-styled shooter in it will have my thanks.
Preferably a good one, mind, but eh. |

I was thinking that since Unity free is reasonably powerful the same would have applied and it would've happened before if there was interest for that kind of thing. This is the biggest news in FPS modding since Quake 3 going GPL. |

Unfortunately it seems like for a while ADR was kind of in hiatus. Seems like development has started up again though. I really hope some awesome projects start up because of this. Maybe we can start one to do a proper version of Sonic 06. =P I'm pretty sure Sonic 06 used the Unreal 3 engine. |

They used their own engine. I've poked around an extracted copy of the game, the asset structure is totally wrong for UE3, and not to mention they're using their own file formats for a good number of the assets. The thing about UE3, is that games made with UE 3 tend to have the "feel" of being made with UE3. There's only a few exceptions to this, such as borderlands. As far as Doom 3, I'm hoping they release the latest version of idTech 4; the one with all of the fancy soft shadows and such that they've been using in some of the more recent Call of Duty games, and Wolfenstein. I think I might mess about with this a bit. |
