So yeah, where can I get the correct .RXL patch which I am looking for? Tried Google search, but found nothing useful.

Thanks for any help. :) I'm new to ROM hacking, RXL patches and the like.

RXL patches are a bit... Extinct.

Saxman used to have a site that had them on years ago, I think.

Wow. I haven't heard about RXL or ChaoSaX in quite literally years...no idea, but nostalgic nonetheless.

    Thanks for your responses.

Do you perhaps know, the best way to edit text, title cards, etcetera in Sonic The Hedgehog? I can't seem to find a simple way to do this yet I know it is possible. I tried a Hex program but couldn't understand much.

    being an asshole =P
Years ago people used to use tools that modified the binaries to do that. Now most of them are unused because people started working exclusively with asm hacks, and the remaining ones evolved to work with asm instead of binaries.

But those old tools are still easy to obtain, many of them are available in the wiki. You'll be pretty limited with them, but if you want to start and get the grisp of the limitations you have to deal with and such, or just do a lame hack =P they may be a good way to start *dodges tomatoes*

I agree with Sik. Some of that older stuff may actually be useful for beginners to learn about ROM hacking. It gives people a view into what can be done. Gerbil's Sonic HackingWiz Pro was always a good tool to use to do a variety of things. And certainly the RXL patches could be used to do some things, most of mine being used to change some art (and actually, I still have the RXL patches if you still want them.)

But I also agree with the others that generally speaking, these tools are pretty much extinct as far as what people are doing with ROMs these days. I'd recommend some older tools for education purposes, but when you feel ready, you probably want to download the disassembly from this site and use that to make ROM modifications.

    I have:

    Art_stat.rxl - Replace HUD art (Sonic 1)
Icon.rxl - Replace the player icon art (Sonic 2)
    Intro.rxl - Replace the "Sonic/Tails In" screen (Sonic 2)
    Select.rxl - Replace level select / 2p vs / options screen art (Sonic 2)
Srile.rxl - Sonic ROM Internal Level Editor; dumps object placements in debug to SRAM (Sonic 2)
Srile2.rxl - Same as above, but appears to be updated somehow (Sonic 2)
Title.rxl - Replace title screen art (Sonic 2)

Looking at the dates, the last RXL patch I made was in October of 2002. These things are OLD!

I thought my memory was fucking with me when I thought I saw these in like 2002-2003, but God damn that's old xD

Thank you for all your replies. I did not know RXL was that old!!

Well, I have been using Sonic text Editor, but it only allows access to change the Level Select Menu text in Sonic The Hedgehog. I am looking for a simple way to change all texts in the game from Sonic to Shadow. Is there a best way to do this?

The "Sonic" text for the life icon is compressed art, and unless someone has a suggestion I am not thinking of, my icon RXL patch would probably suite that. Actually, doesn't Nemesis have a tool that can be used for this also?

The title screen "Sonic" text is pretty much the same way -- you'll need the RXL patch, or that thing Nemesis created (again, can someone remind me what it is I'm thinking of?)

The options screen text is easy to change. You can actually use one of the hacking documents online to figure out how to do that.

I want to be of more help, but at this very moment I'm in a hurry because I got a pile of things to do the rest of the day. But hopefully someone will pick up where I left off and fill you in on what you can do to change that stuff.

    Hi, STE author here =P

That's the only place in the game where Sonic is stored as text. For the rest of it, it's graphics - you'll need to edit them with sprite editing utilities.

EDIT: fffffffffff, Saxman got in first

    Okay, I see.

May I have all of the RXL patches which you have? I would be unexplainably grateful to get them, but, how would you give me them exactly? In a RAR archive in an E.mail or something? If so that'd be fine as I have WinRAR. :)

Thank you all once again, and thanks Overlord for the additional information AND for making Sonic Text Editor. Thanks all! ;)

Sorry, I forgot about it completely. Give me a little time -- they're on my old computer, and the only method of transfering them I can take is using a USB flash drive, and the one I have is faulty (sometimes I have to sit there and wiggle it around for a good while before it detects it.)

No problem man. Once you get the RXL files ready, hit me a PM and I'll tell you my e.mail address to send me the files. It'll be best to zip them all up first though otherwise the file size will be too large to send I think.

Thanks once again for all of your help! ;)

    They're like a few kb each. =P

Besides, why are you wanting to use RXL patches anyway? :S

    Fixed your post.

Small question, mind posting these onto the forums? I wouldn't mind trying them out sometime for educational purposes.
