Getting eargasms on www.italo.nu :D
|
So, I messed around with Genecyst (it has nice layer disable/enable features and its got few other nice things) and I noticed something fun in Mega Turrican (European version)... deep in its VRAM there was Mario AND Sonic... I have not seen those 2 in the game... maybe they're present in the secret level that you can get into after the elevator part (and I've not got into that stage yet).
Anyway, here's what GensKmod shows to us :P |

Sik is pronounced as "seek", not as "sick".

Chances are, those were never in the game and are easter eggs =P
Also gotta love how most games have graphics arranged into VRAM in 16-tile rows like emulators do ;P |

Hahaha, that's rather funny... "MARIO AND SONIC AT THE OLYMPIC MEGA TURRICAN"
The sprites themselves look rather neat, too. |

I have checked and its (not exactly surprising) in the US version as well.
Anyway the Mario sprite looks like a good copy of the Super Mario World sprite and Sonic looks like his 8-bit self. So the first licensed video game to actually have Sonic and Mario is in fact Mega Turrican. The stuff you find in unused code these days. This post has been edited by Anthall: Jan 10 2009, 09:50 AM |

I wonder if Sega or Nintendo knew about this? |

The next thing we'll see is Nintendo sending a Cease and Desist letter.

That's odd. I'm planning to hide Mario somewhere in my hack, then I saw this. Creepy
Intresting find, btw. Do you think it has something to do with Super Turrican? |

This technically means Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games wasn't the first officially licensed game to feature both Mario in Sonic in some way. And the game came out over a decade before M&S, too. Sure, they're hidden sprites, but they're in the game nontheless.
It's actually kind of mind-boggling. |

I wonder if there's some sort of code to activate them. I can't imagine there's been a lot of research on Mega Turrican. |

I believe that these were ment to be in the game depending on which version you were playing (super or mega), but they forgot to remove them and also ported them it seems. Maybe check super turrican for the same graphics.

Isn't Super Turrican an entirely different game though? IIRC Mega Turrican's a port of the Amiga's Turrican 3 (though something tells me that for some reason, the MegaDrive version came out first).
I think the Super Turrican games were completely new. |

Amiga version came out before the MD version, despite MD version was the first one to be finished... some publisher finding issues caused it AFAIK.
