Cool stuff. I dunno whether it feels sonic-y enough though... it feels a lot more like something that'd be in Dynamite Headdy or something :P

I still think Dioxaz's composition for Cosmic City Zone was absolutely fantastic, and should be the flagship style of music for the project. Genesis-style music is nice, but what really matters is the composition style, not the chip it's supposed to be on.

Although I do love "watertemple" or whatever it was from this YM2612 set—brilliant composition.

Just a quick question:

What format should submissions be in? I know the (very good) examples are in .mp3 format, but I can't help feeling MIDI, or even .ogg, would be more appropiate, especially for conversion to the YM-2612.

I listened to those musics. They're not bad at all.
The water temple one though is not really fitting to a water-filled level IMO. I think that it's the composition style that doesn't fit to that kind of level.
However, the Glam City one is perfect for a city-like level. Entertaining, a real pleasure to the ears.
The Skysurf one is excellent too but doesn't really fit to the Blue Mountain concept, I think it would be more fitting into an aerial zone.
And the last one seems to fit to the Canadian zone (I guess it's the zone that drawing is related to) but it could also fit to a water-filled level.

Anyway, it will be a pleasure to listen more tunes.

EDIT: this is what I call a fitting music for a water-filled stage: http://www.zshare.ne...242909cfaa6578/

Haha! Are you crazy!

That watertemple fits perfectly. Every sonic game water levels is kinda same style.
Think about hydrocity or labyrinth.

And that crystal orbit does not fit at all.
I first tought, that's not even sonic style, but then I listened it further and noticed, that it's good
and fitting, but I think that fit space level.

Thundertimi, your comments aren't particularly helpful. I happen to share the same viewpoint in that, whilst the music is good—very good, in fact—it doesn't really fit the Sonic style. Unless you can somehow justify your own viewpoint with some sort of reasoning, examples, or the like, then I don't really see how anyone can subscribe to your viewpoint.

I could say "His World" fits the theme of this game perfectly, but if I just say that and nothing else, there's not much to support my views.

Well, you know, I think the same can be said about me as I don't really justify my point of view there.

For the most part, that piece is pretty bland in the beginning, but I felt that it got really great starting at 1:14. Really Sonic-y.

This actually sounds like it could work for Cosmic City with a bit of editing. I love the more lively feel of this song as opposed to Dioxaz's approach, though that was very well done and fitting as well. With all the concepts we've come up with so far, I just don't want the game to get too gloomy in terms of the overall mood, or else that will make things to boring and awkward. However, with that being said, I always thought the underground sewer/ruins stage was going to have a much more creepy theme to it, more like Mystic Cave + Labyrinth or something.

Music can have a pretty big effect on a stage's tone, and it's probably a good idea to think about not only what would fit best for the given stage, but the game as a whole. Being "Sonicy" and fitting the environment isn't enough - how is the player going to feel when he passes 4 stages in a row of nothing but depressing environments and melancoly beats? Probably best to vary things up a bit. Things that also go into consideration would be the type of stage you're making music for gameplay-wise - is it a fast stage, a slightly slower stage, or maybe something epic? Glam City seems kind of neat for a city stage, but for a Sonic game, the beat is a little slow for a stage focused on speed, which kind of takes away from the whole "rush" a little. Part of what made Chemical Plant, Flying Battery, and Death Egg (S&K) awesome stages is how Sonic blasted through them with that fast-paced music in the background.

What programs do you guys use to create this music, plus what do you use to make it sound Genesis-like? Please respond, because I would like to learn to make my own tracks, or help edit any existing tracks to make them better for this project.

Sorry for that.

I still think, that sounds more like space level music.

For some reason the water temple one reminds me more of a menu song.

Probably one of those Genisis music trackers. While I'd love to work in one directly, I simply don't have the time or patience to try and learn yet another music software(from Sheet-music to Piano Roll. Wow.) If it had a Piano Roll editor, then maybe that'd be different. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Anyhow, If I wirte anything(which I'll do at least a sample track), I'll have to work external in Fruity Loops, and then import/convert the song for editing in the tracker/other program. I'm also curious on what programs allow for this great genuine Genisis-sound.(say that five times fast :p)

To those of you whom use trackers, your work is amazing ;D. I don't know how you do it.
