Nice, but the shading seems a bit inconsistent going from bright to dark, then to bright again. Also, he seems to be smiling in the original.
You might want to trace the sprite instead of a custom drawing, by the way. Else, more inconsistencies in shapes, shading or animation fluidity might keep coming up.

It is an exact trace over the original sprite. The shading seemes to be an unavoidable issue see as that is the way it is done in the actual sprite.

The shading tones were indeed inverted for some reason, and changed a little from the original just like the shape for the brighter part.
I'm quite sure that tracing from a traced image will give less accurate results.
