In order of submitted Character Art to be "Officially Accepted" on the database, it must follow the SET STYLE:

Approved HD Methods

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just keep in mind that if you are going to do HD graphics, don't give yourself the limitation that it has to look right scaled down. If people want to play the game with scaled down graphics, they'll play the original. If they're playing in HD, they want an HD experience.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------ICEKnight's Character - Animals--------

Using the official art as reference improve the animals from the original frames to something more HD, adding shades while keeping the same basic animations from the original art.

**Note that we decided to add a fourth "scared frame" for when the animal is freed from the evil machine that keeps it captive**

--------Yarharhar's method--------

I think Eggman's looking more to the right on the original screenshot - note that his right eye is 'thinner' than his left, giving us the impression he's looking more to the right than the rendered ones.

Are you sure about that? The black there is part of the foreground because otherwise you'd see the actual background. Just casually looking through the pattern tables in Gens+ (which means I'm not looking at them as mapped, however) I don't see tiles for his right hand.

If not done via sprite priority, then I'd imagine via intention. I always assumed he had two hands on that sprite and it was just covered.

It was even a bit more off-model in Sonic 1 (at least when looking at his more ellaborate mustache)

Sonic 1 sprites are totally different from Sonic 2 ones.

The only thing different between the two sprites, save for the missing hand, is the yellow changed to bright orange, the eyes changed from blue to black, and the darkest red being replaced by dark red. All of these changes simply reflect pallete limitations.

Your sprite fails to capture Eggman's feel. In the original games, that little bend at the bottom of his moustache made it seem like he was smiling. Your sprite makes him seem like he's just... staring into the horizon.

(It actually reminds me of DSS what with one of his eyes being higher than the other and stuff.)

I really can't see what you're talking about...

About the new sprite...

-I think the head can still improve a bit. His shape looks a bit bloated, and his glasses and mustache feel disconnected from his nose.
-Also, his mustache looks a bit uneven, his right side being a bit more upwards.
-The yellow parts from the body still don't feel in perspective.
-The white buttons might be a bit too tall.
-But the most important thing might be the way the brights and shadows are being handled for the mustache. It's supposed to have some brights right on the topmost part, and darker shadows in the lower part of the edges. In the newest version, there's a dark outline where the brights should be applied, which kinda screws up the lightning used by the original sprite.

Here't the higher quality version of the modifications I made, so you can see the way I applied the brights:

I want to stay as close as possible to the original frame, not an hybrid one.
Also blue or black glasses, which one do you prefer? (The Growler's image let me think about changing them to black.)

For today, that's all.

Is there any particular reason as to why Eggman's head is so orange?

QUOTE(The Growler @ Apr 3 2008, 07:24 PM) *

I did say a smile, not a toothy grin.

EDIT: Is there something with image attachment thumbnails, or is it just on my end?

Eggman's an anthropomorphic egg, isn't' he? I'd say it looks nicely egg-coloured actually - although I suppose it could do with the orange toning down just a touch.

The original definitely has a perfect egg-colour

lol @ your avatar Growler.

I have to say, I also prefer the black glasses. I mean, in the original Sonic 2 sprite his glasses are clearly black. And in the Japanese Sonic 2 art work that has been posted, his glasses are black. I'd say that black shades clearly looks cooler than blue too.

Also, I agree his skin colour should be a tad paler.

His skin should be more pink, I think. And mustache a bit darker.

You're perfectly right

(I also added a closer color scheme to The Growler's image)
