More Sega Channel prototypes dumped.

Discussion in 'General Sega Discussion' started by Kiddo Cabbusses, Jul 20, 2011.

  1. Wandering around Digitpress (like usual), I ran into this thread;

    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=155263

    And some nice upload links!

    http://home.comcast.net/~scottith/sega_genesis_prototypes.zip

In this up are a few Sega Channel protos!
... oh, and don't forget Taz. *rimshot*

The three Sega Channel ROMs are called "Sega Channel 01", "Sega Channel 02" and " Sega Channel Game Guide".

I took a few screenshots - copypasta from the Digitpress thread.

The most notable thing about these earlier SC protos is this old logo. It was replaced with a proto-Sega Pat design by Demo 4.

Hehehe... "Stimulation". Someone's mind was in the gutter...

Ahh, nothing like memories of Windows 3.1 to have in place of actual "news"!

The 02 dump does not appear to look very different from the 01 cart.
    The Game Guide, however, boots into this;

Hey, that's Demo 4 Sega Pat up there!

NOTE: I wouldn't be surprised if any of these are phone sex hotlines now.

Wait... what RPG used the Mega Mouse?

I haven't touched the Taz ROM yet.

Neat! The Taz-Mania proto doesn't seem too different right off the bat, though.

By the way, the SEGA Channel protos are mentioning The Magical Quest again, so that's not a one-time mistake anymore. There's also mention of the Jim Power game for the Genesis, which didn't get released, yet a prototype of it exists... I'd say it's very possible that this game was once in production before it was scrapped for its sequel, The Great Circus Mystery.

Yay! More Sega Channel prototypes! These are earlier than the one we got before. Oddly, in these protos the icons on the bottom for game info work, while in the one with the musiic they don't. Also gotta love the filler text in "News and info". I'll check it out more tommorow as I don't really have too much time today, gotta go to sleep :P

Also, it seems like Sega Channel 01 and Sega Channel 02 roms are the same.

    What peripheral is "P"?

The cartridge photo reveals that "Game Guide" is also known as Demo #37.

... holy crap, are there that many of these going around? Could they all be different?

Sucks there's no music, I was hoping to possibly find some new tunes or something. Still interesting nonetheless, I hope somehow all of these carts can be obtained someday.

    researching PC-98/X68000 sound drivers
I was interested to see, if the ROMs contain songs not in Demo 4, so I loaded them into M1. (M1 has generic support for the GEMS driver.)
While editing m1.xml I noticed that 01 and 02 have the same checksum, btw.

Interestingly the Game Guide ROM actually has music. It's the exactly same music as in Demo 4 (with the same buggy loop in track 11), but any tracks past 16 are corrupted.
Demo 01/02 don't play anything. (but that doesn't mean they don't have music, as the Taz Mania beta doesn't work in M1, too)

01 and 02 are byte per byte identical. I wonder if the guy who posted them made a mistake when dumping and renaming the ROM contents.

EDIT: "You have posted more than the allowed number of quoted blocks of text", wtf.

  10. It's possible the person happened to have PCBs with two identical prototype ROMs.

There's something on a related note:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?a4bqif4k44hl8tv

This is a savestate from the original Sega Channel rom captured using Gens/GS with the palette lock activated, and opening it up in Gsavestate and changing the pallete (It's plain black, so you must change it or else you'll see nothing) leads to well, this:

The Sega-Pat you see on the bottom is actually two scroll layers for each frame. Also, the palette I used here is just copypasted from Sonic 1 Title Screen, and is only used here to show you that correct graphics exist in the rom.
This is proof that the intro for Sega Channel is not absent. Maybe if I'll look around the rom with HivePal I might find the correct palette.

Odd. The intros are slightly different in Regen and Gens. In Regen, the Sega-Pat jumps onto the SEGA from top of the screen, but in Gens he shrinks into the screen, and the jingle gets cut off mid-way by the error.

It's been a while, but I think there were a few different variations of the intro that played at random when you turned it on.

Actually, the first one in the video doesn't appear at all. The second one appears in Gens, and the Regen one isn't here at all... odd.
Also for some reason I can't get either emulator to display different animations than the ones they always show. Trying to use savestates between the emulators results in crashes. Weird weird and weird.

Also ValleyBell, could you check the final Sega Channel rom for music with that magic thingy you call M1?
