I wanted to find out what people's favourites are, so I've searched the forums and can't find a thread on this.

Before I start a poll or whatever, I wanted to check with some of the older members in case they know of one. Posting the same thread seems a sure way to not get promoted to full member :P

    Anyone know?

Well, if there is already a topic, a Moderator could merge the existing topic with yours. Also, even if there is an old topic, it'll never be bumped, because that's not allowed. I'll post my favorite songs, my all time favorite song is Stardust Speedway GF (JAP). Next in the list would be Ice Cap Zone Act 1, Competition Menu from Sonic 3, Sky Chase Zone, Quartz Quadrant (JAP), Quartz Quadrant GF (JAP), Special Stage (Sonic CD, JAP), D.A. Garden (JAP), Sonic Boom, Stardust Speedway(US), Stardust Speedway BF (US), Wacky Workbench (US), Tidal Tempest (US), Tidal Tempest BF (US), Sky High Zone, Crystal Egg Zone, Hot Crater Act 2, Cyber Track Zone (all 4 versions), Open Your Heart, and finally Chaos Version 6. There's more than that though, I just can't think of them at the moment. :v:

All of it up until Sonic Adventure 2. The older Sonic themes were, along with Megaman's music, The epitome of the music from their generation. Sonic Unleashed was great as well. More than half of my MP3 player is music from the Sonic games. Yeah, I'm a nerd.

I have Sonic 1 - S&K on iTunes, plus Hedgehog Heaven and Project Chaos (remix albums for Sonic 2 and S3K respectively) and MetalHog by MegaDriver (an album of Sonic musics in a metal style). I used to have about 200 MIDI remixes and some stuff by Cinossu but I lost that...

Star Light Zone, Sonic 2 Ending, Sky Sanctuary Zone (especially Kanjika's orchestration), Panic Puppet Act 1 (or whichever one was reused for Twinkle Park). Windy and Ripply, Grand Metropolis, Dreams of an Absolution, and the two Tornado chases in Unleashed. That just about sums it up.

All the Twinkle Snow ones, even the map.

I may have forgotten some ones but the essential is here. I'm not really a fan of the Sonic 1 & 2 tracks on Megadrive.

    3. Mystic Cave (2-player.)
    4. Flying Battery (Not act specific.)
    5. The Doomsday Zone
    6. Lava Reef Act 1

My personal favourites. But when it comes down to it. I haven't really got around to playing much of the modern sonic games, so I'm only aware of the classic stuff.

This is my kind of thread! :>
I'm going to copy what nineko did and bold my favourites out of my favourites. :P

In order they appear + series appearance... for the Classic Series at least:

    Labyrinth Zone
    Starlight Zone
    Scrap Brain Zone
    Chemical Plant Zone
    Casino Night Zone
    Metropolis Zone
    Quartz Quadrant - Present
    Quartz Quadrant - Good Future
    Stardust Speedway - Present
    Stardust Speedway - Past
    Stardust Speedway - Bad Future
    Hydrocity Zone
    IceCap Zone
    Launch Base Zone
    Flying Battery Zone
Lava Reef Zone <--- THIS track is what made me realize that music in video games is awesome.
    Death Egg Zone

For S3&K themes, both act musics in general are pretty awesome. Lava Reef Act 1 is probably my favourite in the entire series of Sonic music, though.

Also, all of the boss musics are usually awesome, in particular, both boss themes in Sonic CD and the Egg Emperor theme in S3&K.

The entire Sonic Adventure Soundtrack, bar most of the vocal tracks. I feel like it met every standard Sonic music set in the last decade, this with real instruments and extraordinary samples. There was a real sense of variety that just hasn't been recreated in any other Sonic game.

Rusty Ruin 2 from Saturn's S3D Blast is my favorite Sonic track; it's such a zen track to listen to. I'll sometimes listen to it when I need to concentrate. Otherwise, game-wise, it added a lot of ambience to those old rainy ruins.

Also, I find Collision Chaos Bad Future (JP) to be a real headbanger; all those piano synths and heavy percussion slams, and the occasional "Unh!". It's a real upbeat track that gets me excited-- now THAT is what video game music should sound like.

Overall, I guess I really like all the jazzy tracks from the Sonic series; I find them to be such fun tunes, and I wish that style of music would be brought back to video games, or at least be a prominent style in the Sonic games.

  15. Sonic 3&K - Invincibility music (fast paced and catchy, love it)

Sonic 3&K Flying Battery act 2 (Same reason as above, I can never get it out of my head)

Sonic 3&k Boss Music (Has that "sense of dread" feeling that no other boss music in the series has)

Sonic 3&k Ice Cap Zone act 1 (genesis version, not the PC version)

Sonic 1 Green Hill (Classic. I never get tired of it)

Sonic Advance 3 Chaos Angel zone 2 Acts 1 and 3 (yes, I like a tune from a fairly recent sonic game, both fit the atmosphere of the level very well in completely different ways. Act 1 has that feeling that you're on the last stretch of your journey and you NEED to hurry and stop Robotnik. Act 3 has a sort of sense of dread to it that really fits the ancient ruin vibe.)

Sonic 2 Super Sonic (the other games just re-used the invincibility tune, but this was actually unique to Super Sonic, and it was awesome)

Pretty much every track from every timeline of Quartz Quadrant JP shares a position at the very apex of music in games. I'd name a few others, but SS's edict bars me from doing so when I completely lack the vocabulary for discussing how I feel about music beyond "I like it" and "It's shit".

Stardust Speedway and Metallic Madness GF (JP), Botanic Base, Amazing Arena, E-102's theme, Leading Lights, Crazy Robo, Red Barrage Area, Heroes' Bonus Challenge, S3DB Gen's Final Fight and credits <3
EDIT: Save for Amazing Arena, anyway. I can tell you why I like that: The psychotic rhythm section (dat bass) and the way the chimes sensuously dip into the semitones partway through. That's a classy one. Oh, and S3DB Gen's credits and E-102's theme just ooze soul. I could listen to those all day.

It's pretty hard to justify exactly why you like certain pieces of music.

    Flying Battery Zone (both acts)
    Metropolis Zone
    Sandopolis Zone (act 2)

Whenever I hear those ones I think how fun they'd be to play with a band.

I love Spring Yard Zone and Scrap Brain Zone (Mega Drive) for their kind of "mysterious" sounds, but also the way they fit the levels. Especially Scrap Brain Zone... I have absolutely no doubt that music belongs in a factory with fire jets and randoms saws everywhere.

I also love Emerald Hill Zone for the bass line which I wish I could play, and Mystic Cave Zone is just cool.

I also only recently realized I like the Sonic 3 act 1 boss music. I used to think it was a dud.

Sonic 1 - Spring Yard Zone. An appropriate tempo and how it's played in a minor scale makes it have this feeling of fun that I don't think Carnival Night Zone captured as well.

Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant Zone. A busy, thumping, blaring tune all in all. Upbeat and alert. Near the end when it repeats that one measure suggests that.

Sonic CD - Any "Past" song. Palmtree Panic's sounds exotic but not in an obnoxious way. I love that one instrument that sounds sort of muffled that beeps and boops near the end of the melody. Wacky Workbench was delightful, the synth that echoes in the beginning accompanies the faster, main melody quite well. It sounds like a mix between funk and pop.

Sonic 3&K - Doomsday Zone, Chrome Gadget Zone and Desert Palace Zone. I would love to hear a version of this that sounds like it would fit more in Sonic 1 or 2. I like how it sort of climbs and how it repeats, but there's a part at the end that breaks it up so it doesn't become tiring. Chrome Gadget and Desert Palace both sound depressed and upbeat at the same time, I think it's with how the songs hit some minor chords? (Chrome Gadget near the start, Desert Palace near the end).

Sonic Adventure - Pleasure Palace and the Egg Carrier theme. Pleasure Palace is one of the last songs for a while in the series that sounds happy rather than "psyched to the max" like Seaside Hill in Sonic Heroes suggested. The Egg Carrier theme was dark, but in an appealing and fun way. I wish they would use this for Eggman's theme in future Sonic games rather than the atonal, trying-too-hard theme introduced in Sonic 2006.

Sonic Unleashed - Apotos Windmill Daytime. I don't like how almost every Daytime song had the same tempo, but this one really stood out to me. Apotos has an interesting melody and it doesn't follow the patterns I've heard in other Sonic songs that denote a happy tone.

Sonic Colors - Sweet Mountain Zone. Since this game's music is in the same vein as Unleashed, I'm already excited to see what the rest of the music will sound like in later zones. Already I'm loving this tune, as its fast-paced, light-hearted mix between big band/beach rock reminded me of the music you would hear on Speed Racer in extended racing sequences. The moment anyone finds an mp3 of the whole song, tell me.

I've noticed that my favorite Sonic tunes throughout all the games have a mood in them that I think doesn't suggest being outright joyful. Huh.

Hmm, I suppose mine would be:

Sonic 1 - Scrap Brain Zone. I like this track for it's industrial feel and nostalgia.
Sonic 1 - Labyrinth Zone (which has always reminded me of an 80s exercise video)
Sonic 1 - Spring Yard Zone. This track has sounds very smooth and well constructed to me.
Sonic 1 - Final Zone. Very epic and classic.

Sonic 2 - Oil Ocean Zone. It's a fairly exotic and well put-together track.
Sonic 2 - Casino Night Zone 2P. I think the lows and highs of this song mix pretty well.
Sonic 2 - Metropolis Zone. Just like Scrap Brain Zone, I like this track for it's industrial/mechanical theme.
Sonic 2 - Wing Fortress Zone. It's a pretty intense track. I believe it's supposed to hype you for what's to come.
Sonic 2 - Death Egg Zone What's to come. This track always sounded a little mysterious to me.
Sonic 2 - Final boss theme. Once again, very epic and fitting for a final boss battle.

Sonic CD (JP) - Palmtree Panic Present, Past, Good Future, Bad Future. Past has a very tranquil feel to it, while present and good future have a very upbeat tropical theme. PPZ Bad Future is a very fitting techno track. I like them all, to be honest with you.
Sonic CD (JP) - Collision Chaos Good Future& Bad Future. I like the heavy bassline of the upbeat Good Future and the mechanical, post-apocalyptic Bad Future track.
Sonic CD (JP) - Tidal Tempest Past, Present, & Good Future. Tidal Tempest Past sounds very mysterious, as if that track is all that's left of a lost civilization. Present and good future are very dramatic.
Sonic CD (JP) - Quartz Quadrant Past, Good Future. I think that Quartz Quadrant Past is mixed well and that Good Future is very uplifting.
Sonic CD (JP) - Stardust Speedway Past & Bad Future. I like Past for it's jazzy theme and Bad Future for it's mixing (and the fact that it's the most upbeat bad future track).
Sonic CD (JP) - Robotnik theme
Sonic CD (JP) - Special Stage
I like distorted synth music, I like electronic music. This has both.
Sonic CD (JP) - Little Planet
This hidden track (of sorts) is also very mysterious and shifts in composition. From what I've read, it may have been copied off Pacific 909, a very chillin/tranquil song by 808 State.
Sonic CD (NA) - Sonic Boom. I like it better than Toot Toot Sonic Warrior... That's my explanation.

Sonic 3 - Competition menu It reminds me of catchy 70s funk. Why the hell not?
Sonic 3 - Chrome Gadget Other than the nostalgia factor, I like it's arrangement.
Sonic 3 - Level Select It's a very laid back and catchy song.
Sonic 3 - Mini-boss music One of my favorite Sonic 3 tracks from Michael Jackson. It's catchy and it's mastered very well.
Sonic 3 - Ice Cap Zone I like it for it's techno theme.
Sonic 3 - Final boss battle with Robotnik Once again, a very epic and intense theme. The use of piano in the background served the track well.

Sonic 3K - Flying Battery Zone Act 1 I like it for it's dramatic and mechanical feel.
Sonic 3K - Death Egg Zone Act 1 It's like a techno powerhouse.
Sonic 3K - Doomsday Zone This track is very fitting for it's level, fast-paced, and intense. It was also mixed very well, imo.

Sonic Spinball's music feels both creepy and powerful to me. The best example of this thought would be the boss music. The Machine and Lava Power House are very powerful electronic tracks as well. As for the options music, well, I like the composition.

    Sonic Spinball - Boss music
    Sonic Spinball - The Machine
Sonic Spinball - Lava Power House
    Sonic Spinball - Options music

Knuckles Chaotix's soundtrack utilized the 32X's sound processor very well. The tracks are essentially like their Genesis counterparts with added details here and there. In my opinion, that makes a lot of the tracks sound very complete.

    Knuckles Chaotix - Evening Star
Knuckles Chaotix - Door Into Summer

    Knuckles Chaotix - Botanic Base
    Knuckles Chaotix - Marina Madness
    Knuckles Chaotix - Techno Tower

Sonic 3D Blast (as well as the other Sonic games from Traveller's Tales) has an interesting soundtrack. It's full of variety, from the upbeat first level to the more depressing Volcanic Valley or Final Zone.

Sonic 3D Blast - Panic Puppet Zone Act 1
Sonic 3D Blast - Final Zone
Sonic 3D Blast - Volcanic Valley Act 2

Sonic Adventure - Hey you, it's time to speed up!! I like the mixing, namely the added details behind the actual music itself. As speed up music, it's very fitting.
Sonic Adventure - Invincibility The slap bass reminds me of Seinfeld.
    Sonic Adventure - E-102y theme
Sonic Adventure - E-101 mkII theme
Sonic Adventure - Twinkle Park part 1 (aka Panic Puppet Zone Remix)

E-101 MKII's music is a great example of jazz-techno fusion, something that seemed to be popular back then (like Necro and Twelve's stage in Street Fighter III: Third Strike). It's sounds dramatic and sad. The same can be said for E-102's theme.

I liked Panic Puppet's theme, and the Twinkle Park remix definitely took it to a new level.

Sonic Adventure - Hot Shelter part 1
Sonic Adventure - It Doesn't Matter instrumental
    Sonic Adventure - Egg Carrier

Hot Shelter is a good example of funk, rock, and electronica fusion. It gets a thumbs up!
I simply prefer It Doesn't Matter without lyrics since I found them to be a little irritating.
The Egg Carrier is Robotnik's floating masterpiece, and he didn't hold back on music production. :P

Sonic Adventure 2 - Mission Street
Sonic Adventure 2 - White Jungle
Sonic Adventure 2 - Sky Rail
    Sonic Adventure 2 - Biolizard
Sonic Adventure 2 - Meteor Herd (though it would be better if it lacked the "DIS IS KNUCKEWS" lyrics)
Sonic Adventure 2 - Dry Lagoon
Sonic Adventure 2 - Hey you, it's time to speed up again!!
Sonic Adventure 2 - Sonic vs. Shadow

Mission Street is very laid back and uplifting, White Jungle and Sonic vs. Shadow are both very fast-paced and powerful tracks, Sky Rail rocks, Biolizard is a generally interesting song, Meteor Herd is interesting in composition (minus the rapping), and Dry Lagoon sounds very funky and 70s, which I like. Lastly, I like Hey You, It's Time to Speed Up Again!! because of the harmony between the two guitars at one point.

    Sonic 2006 - White Acropolis part 1
    Sonic 2006 - Result music

I found Sonic 2006 to have a pretty generic soundtrack, but White Acropolis reminded me of older Sonic music, what with all the heavy powerful techno (but the snowboarding destroyed the entire experience). The result music sounds very relaxed, 'nuff said.

There you go, I made a list, saw an official post against lists, and edited mine to fall within the rules. Enjoy.
