Right in front of my computer.
Some artwork, a ZZT game, and a hack.
Now what we have here is a little something I also acquired from the same ex-Sega dev who sold me the Sonic Advance 1 prototype awhile back. This took awhile to sort out because I didn't have the right DVD drive to dump it. So here it is folks...

I'm not sure what to make of this because I don't have a powerful enough computer to run it at the moment. I don't know whether to call this a prototype, preview or review copy to be fair. I imagine this will be a very near to final if it's not the final version. If so, how different is this compared to the one drx posted ages ago as well as the final version? Perhaps someone who can run this could look into it further.

There is also an interesting story in regards this game as well which I'll be happy to share you with at some point. Enjoy!

  2. Maybe this version has some stuff like the secret area in the Dark Chao Garden, and the water in the Hero Chao Garden? I think those were removed from the Gamecube port at some point in development.

The build date given on the HPZ SA2B preview release is 11/14/2001 so this will be, I assume, the same thing?...

EDIT: And it appears I am wrong...

    Serials:
    HPZ Release - DOL-GSNE-USA
    Orengefox Release - DOL-GSBJ-JAP

The product code "GSBJ" doesn't exist in WiiTDB's titles.txt. It seems odd that they'd change it at the last minute, unless the "GSBJ" was actually an error...

EDIT: Not an error. They used "GSBJ" for the Japanese release, "GSNE" for the U.S. release, and "GSNP" for the European release. No idea why they changed the two-character game ID...

Cool stuff! Who knows, there could be lots of stuff hidden inside like the Sonic Adventure DX preview.

Also downloading and able to run Dolphin. I'll take a look at this, too.

I remember seeing this on eBay a few months a go and was curious to see if anyone got it.

I wasn't sure if it would be worth it because drx released a SA2:B "review" and it was basically the same as the final retail copy. I noticed the date on the disc was similar on here so I assumed that it would be the same deal.

Has anyone checked it out yet? It's still downloading for me.

  9. Downloading now. I have Dolphin on a decent machine, so I'll definitely take a look at it.

Edit: Not seeing any significant differences. Maybe a cutscene sound effect in the Hero opening, but it might just be my memory playing tricks on me. No indications (from what I can tell) of DC stuff - no Big the Cat, UI is the same, Omochao is at the end of City Escape, etc. Crashes for me at the same places as the final did.

A fresh memory card file is ruled as defective by the game - I don't know if that's just an issue on my end, but using the formatting prompt that comes up makes saving work normally.

  10. I always loved sonic adventure 2 because it was Shadow's debut, so I'm very excited.

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
This is a problem with Dolphin.

I played through City Escape and checked out the Chao Garden, and didn't notice anything different. Ran into the same memory card problem as K2J. I was hoping we'd get a more Dreamcasty SA2:Battle with spiky ears and NOT TAKING FUCKING FOREVER RUNNING DOWN THE BUILDING IN CITY ESCAPE, but ah well. Went to the Chao Garden just to see if the GBA was still a VMU, but it wasn't.

EDIT: I just compared the two directly, and still didn't find anything. I remember reading that beta shots of Battle showed a different GBA design, but this one was the same. The one thing I did notice was that this dumped version seemed to have some minor framerate issues. I've played Battle on Dolphin quite a lot, including just now, and never had that happen except in this preview.

I did a quick comparison between the files in this and in the final, and most of the differences consist of Chao related files (Item layouts, textures, etc). That, and the item layout file for the 2P Radical Highway is apparently different, but to a very minor degree it would seem.

Edit: I only checked the root directory of each disc though (proto and final), so that's ignoring the "event" folder.

Could I play this ISO in an SD card on my Wii using the Homebrew Channel? I'd love to give this proto a try!

Just a little word of warning to anyone wanting to play in Dolphin, SA2:B really really doesn't like multi-core emulation (crashes in levels) so you kinda need a really strong single-core to run it well.

From a runthrough of city escape, and a bit of dabbling around in the neutral garden, doesn't look like anything was really changed on that end. I couldn't check the hero or dark gardens, but this is a rather late build for sure, Sonic already had his speed capped off from the dreamcast version, where he was a bit faster, and some of the dreamcast bugs have already been fixed as well.

As for loading on the Wii, I think Gamecube game loading is still disc only. There was a harddrive-load proof of concept video somewhere but I haven't heard anything since.

Wait, does it not support mounting virtual drives?

The Wii has two modes essentially, Wii Mode and Gamecube Mode where it runs a dumbed-down Gamecube BIOS (mIOS, mini IOS I think). While running in Gamecube mode, the Wii disables all Wii functions. USB slots, bluetooth, and even slows down its processor to the same speed as the Gamecube's, so while you can boot Wii ISOs from USB and such, you can't with Gamecube ones.

I think someone is working on a custom mIOS to allow Gamecube loading but it's not done yet. There are ones that allow you to run burned disks, but as my Wii will tell you, that will lead to not being able to run dual-layered Wii games from the disk drive.

This is mostly from memory though, so I might be wrong somewhere :P

  18. No, you are correct. If anyone wanted to play this, they would have to burn it to a DVD.

The crashes only happen when loading the stage and generally don't repeat themselves, so if it happens to crash you just need to restart the game and continue from the same point it crahsed on, rarely you will lose any progress.

  20. Yeah, disabling Dual Core made it no longer crash. The Memory Card issue is apparently because said cards are region-specific, and I was using a US one for this Japanese-tagged ISO.

So no, I'm not seeing any changes from the final.
