A pinball themed ride is being renamed Sonic Spinball, probably to help promote Project Needlemouse.

It's a good fit, you can't get much more linear than rollercoaster.

I don't care what anyone says, Sonic Spinball is the shit. One of my favorite spin offs ever, nice to see it getting a little homage.

Well, classic Sonic physics = pinball, so hopefully this is a hint given to fans by Sega for Needlemouse (since that is what the promotion is all about).

...or it's that Sega was trying to find a way to get attention, asked Alton Towers about which ride they cared about the least, they said "Spinball Whizzer", and BAM! instant promo. :P

Why doesn't the US ever get awesome Sonic based roller coasters like the UK does? D: You people are lucky.

I always wondered whether the title "Spinball Whizzer" was intentional!

Actually the amount of connections between Sonic and Alton Towers is amazing. First there is the Alton Towers theme (Hall of the Mountain King) which is used as the AOSTH theme. Second the ex-ride Toyland Tours had a Sonic section to it with Sonic themed music. And third (although this is less suprising) when I went there about 5 years ago there were Sonic plush toys as prizes in almost everything!

Huge build ups followed by swift and terrifying crashes are what being a Sonic fan is all about, so it's very fitting that UK theme park Alton Towers is naming one of its rollercoasters after the spiky blue whore.

This made me laugh IRL.

I actually like the pinball wizard reference more than the Sonic tie in, for this ride at least.

This. The closest I've ever come to seeing anything Sonic-related at a theme park recently was a Knuckles plush as a prize for a ladder-climbing game. And I suck eggs at anything athletic <_<

Extra points for Madame Tussauds if they make it indoors like the Black Hole was (with a cavern design), add a remix of the Toxic Caves music (like they did with the GHZ music in Toyland Tours) and replace the grass below with green sludge (lit from below).

Oh wow, what the hell? This'll be interesting to see it in blue.

It's still strange though, naming a rollercoaster after a game made about 17 years ago. Well I have no objections either way, it'll be awesome

You haven't been on it. It's shit. At least you get thrilling rides, not trash like this. Gives me a bad feeling what the game is going to turn out like when it's related to this ride....
