S2HD Render Engine Test

Discussion in 'Sonic 2 HD (Archive)' started by LOst, Apr 5, 2009.

Which render would you like the S2HD engine to be primary developed with?

    not R5 :(

R5 doesn't have any scaling menaing people with lower res monitors wont be able to play it :( yes it runs faster and looks nicer but it makes it unplayable for a lot of people.

    aaaaaaaaa
R5 uses OpenGL, scaling isn't in because OGL scaling is different from DirectX scaling, and when this Tech demo was put together, OGL scaling probably wasn't added for time reasons.

It has been three months since the last post... Has anything happened since the S2HD Render test? When will an alpha be made available?

There might be some more OpenGL tests I have to go through. We are following this poll to try to make most people happy :)
When the Alpha will be released is not up to me.

But your famous bugs are gone, that's for sure ;)

Well, I now have two new systems, so I think I would have fun testing new builds if your tests will be public ones.

Hehe, I still think it was funny that my old desktop and laptop were the only ones that could do that bug.

It was perfect timing though, as this project got to be changed at the right time to increase the quality. We are making other valuable changes at the right time as well. What they are I am not allowed to say, but they will be good.

Considering that I've not been around these parts in quite a while, I've decided to still bump this thread just to give my results. OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
    CPU: 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 631
    RAM: 4 GB DDR2
    GPU: 512 MB Nvidia GeForce 9800GT @ 1280x1024

    Open Stage Stage

    R1: 60fps, 458.58 MB, 30% Max CPU Usage
    R2: 60fps, 110.24 MB, 18% Max CPU Usage
    R3: 60fps, 110.13 MB, 28% Max CPU Usage
    R4: 60fps, 110.19 MB, 28% Max CPU Usage
    R5: 60fps, 112.95 MB, 48% Max CPU Usage

    Multi-Bridge Stage

    R1: 60fps, 436.27 MB, Max 33% CPU Usage
    R2: 60fps, 105.31 MB, Max 21% CPU Usage
    R3: 60fps, 105.20 MB, Max 28% CPU Usage
    R4: 60fps, 105.24 MB, Max 30% CPU Usage
    R5: 60fps, 107.97 MB, Max 48% CPU Usage

Out of all the renders, R5 gave a solid 60fps. R1 to R4 would drop a frame or two every now and again, but 60fps was maintained the majority of the time. No graphical glitches were encountered with any of the renders.

    Thanks OrdosAlpha!

I really need an Nvidia card to test on for myself. I am surrounded by ATI cards here.

My new computer has an nVidia card, here are the results.

    Full Specs:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
    RAM: 8GB
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce 9500GS 512MB VRAM
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

    Open Stage

    R1: Solid 60FPS / 479.8MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R2: 59-60FPS / 125.5MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R3: 58-60FPS / 123.8MB RAM / 23% CPU usage
    R4: 56-60FPS (couple skipped frames) / 123.9MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R5: Solid 60FPS / 121.2MB RAM / 33% CPU usage

    Multi-bridge Stage

    R1: 59-60FPS / 460.9MB RAM / 26% CPU usage
    R2: 59-60FPS / 119.1MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R3: 59-60FPS (couple skipped frames) / 118.7MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R4: 57-60FPS / 118.9MB RAM / 25% CPU usage
    R5: 59-60FPS / 116.5MB RAM / 35% CPU usage

To me, R2, R3, and R4 felt unusually "heavy" while playing (not quite as responsive as it should be). R5 felt the most responsive and the smoothest. But on screen, they all looked equally the same.
