So there's an interesting post over on the Dreamcast Junkyard:

It's not the Smash Pack one! There's a video of it running, too:

Quite something. What could have been if they'd released it, eh?

I do remember hearing a story about an official emulator a long time ago. Something like, when Sega knew the Dreamcast was going to fail, and that people were already making Genesis emulators for DC, they made an emulator and quietly leaked it so that the public could have some fun. Or something like that.

I read about this earlier. It's pretty interesting, I could imagine that once it was completed it would have probably worked much better than the one included with Smash Pack. Glad someone found this though, but it's a shame to see that it never seen the light of day. (Though he did state that it probably would have only been used by devs and not commercially sold. Still would have been cool to buy this back in the day, especially if you sold your Genesis/Mega Drive but wanted to play some of your favorites again on your Dreamcast.)

This is probably the same emulator used for the DreamLibrary MegaDrive rental service in DreamPassport.

It's been years since I've seen that, but based on some of the bugs they're seeing, I wouldn't be surprised if it's one in the same.

This is pretty cool. It'll have to do until we get Gens/GS II Dreamcast :eng101:

p.s. does anyone have a mirror? Dropbox shenanigans killed it.

Could this be the DC Mega Drive emulator Steve Snake was working on for Sega? The one in the DC Smash Pack wasn't his, by all accounts, and those menus are reminiscent of KGen.

I do seem to recall something about Mega Drive games running on a Dreamcast (that wasn't Smash Pack-related), but the UK's Official Dreamcast Magazine isn't readily available online and I don't really want to be digging out my own copies right now.

For the record, evidence suggests Sega Europe treated the Dreamcast (and its owners) with much more respect than their counterparts in North America, so it genuinely wouldn't surprise me if this was engineered in response to Sega Smash Pack's tacky presentation... and then culled because lol Europe

No. He never even started development on a Dreamcast version because Sega wanted it done in a timeframe that he knew was impossible. I wish I could remember the source of that information, I can't find one.

As I said previously, I think this is just the DreamLibrary emulator used in DreamPassport. (But I don't have this release to confirm. I do have a copy of DreamPassport somewhere though.) Sega of Europe localized DreamPassport as DreamKey while the US got stuck with PlanetWeb, so it seems feasible to me that they'd also use DreamPassport's emulator.

Despite the really poor sound emulation and visual bugs, this is really cool.
