Is the Homebrew Channel worth it?

I would really like to try Tiddles's "Sonic 3 Complete" hack on something other than my computer, and I would like to try some other hacks as well. Is it worth installing the homebrew channel for that? Also, what are the risks? I don't want my Wii bricked, which is the main thing I'm worried about.

Also, what are other benefits of doing it? I am strongly against piracy, so please don't list that as a "benefit".

If I decide to do it, I plan on using the Brawl method.

EDIT: Also, what exactly is BootMii?

There's no reason not too, and there is no chance of a brick really.

Installing the Homebrew Channel will be the best decision you ever made. =P

Edit: Bootmii is a preloader, that loads before the system menu. It means that if your system menu fucks up, you can fix it.

Depending on when you got your Wii (older = better), BootMii may install to boot2. If it does this, it actually REDUCES your chances of a permanent brick, since if Nintendo screws up the update process, you can recover from it.

I got my Wii in January 07, only a couple of months after launch, but I have the 4.3 System Menu. The main reason why I don't want to install bootMii is because I don't want to have to go through it every time I turn on my Wii. Or is that not the case?

If you take your SD card out it autoloads to the Wii menu, or you can change the config file to make it autoload into the Wii menu.

Why wouldn't you? It's pretty easy, and safe if you do what the guys above just said...
Actually, I'm not too sure about Menu 4.3. I think most of the regular methods (including BannerBomb, my favourite) were patched on that version. So be careful and stuff.

If you rename the bootmii folder on your SD root, it'll boot to the system menu.

I think you can use smashstack, at least.

As for installing BootMii to boot2, that's a matter of how old the hardware is. If you got it early 2007, you should be fine.

Well uh... I just used SmashStack. No problems, Wii works just fine.

Time to play Sonic 3 Complete!

I originally homebrewed my Wii so I could play DKCR with a Classic Controller. Unfortunately, it looks like I need Gecko to be able to install the codes from this thread but the 4.3 menu isn't supported. I asked on their forum for help on what I should do but nobody answered me. It looks like I need to downgrade to run it but at the same time, I once read downgrading could be risky. What do you guys think I should do?

Hmm. USB Loaders like Wiiflow have Ocarina code support built in. It's a lot to go through just to use a Classic Controller, but USB Loaders are nifty anyway.

While you're at it, check out wiibrew.org and get the Homebrew Browser. It allows you to download homebrew apps straight to your SD card from the wii.

Homebrewing your Wii is like the christening of a ship.

It's just not ready to go out on adventure until you hit it with a bottle.
