I apologize if you're not okay with digital, but if you have a PSP/PS3/Vita it's currently on sale at the European Playstatyion store for £1.19. ...I think. The dates are off.

As for TSR, I sure hope there's a demo. I feel like I shouldn't dismiss a game like this before playing it, but not including the boat and plane/some other alternate form of travel/making driving itself more interesting, the tracks shown looking really uninteresting in addition to not changing in any way between laps (I doubt it'll happen, but I'd love some tracks like Burning Depths or Rainbow Road 7), items being more prominent, and having to rely on AI teammates to succeed when playing alone seems like a massive regression.

I know the Riders series doesn't have the best reputation, especially after Free Riders, but it's also disappointing that the restriction to Sonic's universe didn't lead to another attempt at that formula.

You know what's worse? Only 15 playable characters. FIFTEEN. Data miners protest!

(The Sonic fanbase is spoiled...deep down we all know this.)

15 playable characters isn't a lot by standards today, especially when it means that a number of series standards are getting the shaft. It's a bit weak. And the races in this game have 12 participants, so straight away that's very little variation of race participants. Some races (presumably story ones) will have generic Egg Pawn racers instead of one or two of the teams. It's just... weak.

  4. This is going to sound biased coming from a Crash fan, but the original CTR still has a lot going for it. There's actually an active competitive scene that's still going strong to this day, thanks not only to the extremely solid gameplay that doesn't feel the slightest bit dated, but also all the subtle nuances, techniques, and even exploits regularly employed by pros (like the fan-dubbed "SAFFI Fire"). One of the reasons it continues to thrive is because everything requires skill, and the exploits themselves are very tricky to pull off, yet they're beneficial enough to warrant pursuit. Watching these people flawlessly burning up the track is amazing.

That said, I'm no expert myself, and the competitive scene is far from my own reason for loving the game. I do think it's one of the most rewarding games out there when it comes to skill, and for as much as I like something like Mario Kart 8, CTR's mechanics are still deeper. It's an endlessly fun game that gets more enjoyable the more you play it, and personally speaking, I think its multiplayer component is unparalleled. I especially adore Battle Mode, which is far superior here than in any other kart game I've ever played.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is that even today, there are totally legitimate reasons to rank CTR above any other games of the genre (for me it's tied with Mario Kart 8, thanks to the latter's vast number of tracks and its online mode). CTR might not have the most content or the best graphics, but if you value gameplay more than everything else, you can't go wrong with it. Hopefully the remake will do it justice.

As for TSR, count me in the lukewarm reception boat. I don't feel strongly about it in any way besides the soundtrack, which I guess is the same opinion I hold of most non-classic Sonic games.

Has there been any gameplay footage released since the delay announcement? I can't be assed to look through the thread because there's so many ost videos baiting me into thinking there might be actual footage.

    Compared to past Sonic/Sega racers....

    Riders - 16
    Riders ZG - 19
    Free Riders - 18
ASR - 20 (25 when counting platform-exclusive characters and DLC)
ASRT - 22 (33 when counting platform-exclusive characters and DLC)

Outside of those games--even if you discount (what you consider) the various clone characters, MK8 Deluxe still has at least over twenty in the base roster alone, whether you're counting what were formerly DLC characters for the original MK8 game or not. (Yes, MK8 Deluxe isn't an upcoming release and is technically a enhanced port of five-year old game, but it's still selling like hotcates and it's one of the few major kart racers around if you want to talk competition.)

Meanwhile, CTR: Nitro-Fuel, assuming it includes the entire roster from the original game, has 15 like TSR. But that makes sense given that it's --surprise surprise-- a remake of a game from two decades ago, compared to TSR being a new experience / new entry. There's also a good chance the developers may add new characters to expand the roster (a popular theory I've seen is that Spyro could be added as a racer).

    .....

But hey, if Sega really wanted, they could had just allowed ten racers like in Sonic R, or even four racers like the original Sonic Drift, so we should be thankful they didn't do that, amirite? /s

Well you also have the Sonic Forces Speed Battle game that's currently being supported that has like, idk 25 characters now? They have basically the entire Modern cast minus maybe 4 of the Zeti (which, who cares) and then they have special event characters on top of that. 15 seems kinda weak.

  8. Nitro-Fueled already has TSR beat in terms of character count, since they're making Oxide playable this time around. For what it's worth, there's been talk of DLC too, though nothing officially confirmed in terms of characters (I'd be surprised if Spyro didn't make it to the game one way or another, especially since they were coming up with concepts for a Spyro-themed track).

I'm curious, though: are there a lot of Modern Sonic characters people wish were included in TSR? Most of the mainstays are already in, though I can understand why anyone would be upset at Zavok taking just about anyone else's place. Actually, I don't think I've ever seen anyone who genuinely likes the guy. I'm sure there are people out there who do, but surely they must be in the minority? It's weird that Sega doesn't seem to let go of him for some reason.

Zavok sadly is the only evil strong man the modern series has. The classic series has at least Bark, Metal Knuckles, and the Heavy King (who would have been a far better candidate for team Eggman imo).

But there are other characters from the modern series that might have been nice. The rouges, Cream, Espio and Charmy, Chaos, Infinite even (all of who, save for infinite, are in Forces Speed Battle). Hell if Sega wanted Zavok in so bad it could have been Zavok, Zazz, and the girl one (Zeena?). Or a team classic Sega Sonic might have been nice with classic Sonic, Mighty, and Ray. Regardless there was a lot of character potential and they failed in that dept save for bringing back chao.

Aaron Webber: "It's on the way! Expect to see new gameplay and other TSR game features at SXSW, and from then until launch. We'll also be playing it on the livestreams after SXSW."

They haven't shown off the car customisation yet, so I expect they'll touch on that.

I'm hoping for some traditional racing options as well, without the team system.

This game is looking good, 15 characters maybe is not a great number by today's standard... but the Team rosters are pretty good in my opinion (Though in Team Eggman I thought the Egg Pawn was the Power Character instead of Zavok, but I'm not complaining about that. Also I saw there will be two Egg Pawns anyway, so yeah they are in the game).

I'm curious if they will include some new interesting features in the game. I have good faith in Sumo Digital for making a good Sonic racer since I played Sonic & SEGA All Star Racing.

There's no way there aren't going to be unlockable characters, right? The Babylon Rogues constitute a whole team, and if they allow you to mix and match characters outside of story mode, then everyone else is free game. We'll probably see some other Sega mainstays like Aiai, Ulala and Danica Patrick too.

Or they can go triple sevens for disappointment and just cap it as-is. Fuck it, right? Even Big isn't going to make or break the game at this point.

New track revealed here called Hidden Volcano. The track has a giant lava monster that tries to stop you. Screenshots and Sega's description/overview at the link.

I don't know guys. Whilst this looks solid and competent - it seems so uninspired. That said this is one of the best tracks so far. Lava Reef remix incoming?

They have so many levels from previous games that fit the lava trope to go off of, so why does this look so generic?

Because that's what this artstyle does.

  17. Hot Crater remix pls, the style is literally perfect for a racing game.

Volcano Valley would work in a pinch

Music track for Hidden Volcano up.

Collab between Jun Senone and dangerkids' Tyler Smyth (who also worked on Forces' OST).

It sounds more like a hybrid of Ohtani's work of Runners and Forces to me, however.

Yea that track seems fine, sounds pretty Sonic Adventure-ish to me (which tbh this whole soundtrack sounds Adventure-ish). That fucking Forces Death Egg Robot though. Like, look, if they're so adamant on keeping the modern and classic series separate, then why do they keep designing those robots after the ones in Sonic 2? Make a new design or something already (or just stop using Death Egg Robots...)
