I think I have a viris/trojan/something

Avast is going nuts every couple of minutes. Tried to scan my system and a couple viruses were found and apparently taken care of but alerts are still going off. What the best (free) was to clean my system without resorting to reformatting?

    MIDI-to-SMPS-conversions, mostly. Takin' requests, too.
You could try to find a free anti-virus boot-disc, meaning a disc that boots it's own OS outside your hard drive's OS and scans your system from the outside, for example the Avira AntiVir Rescue Disc.

Try doing a boot time scan? I have a feeling the virus is undeleting itself. Best to try killing it before it runs.

Spybot search and destroy is what I use along side Avast. It cleans out what Avast misses but I would also recommend installing Malwarebytes if you want to pretty much guarantee a clean system. I had a nasty trojan from facemoods when installing Jdownloader and found these two to do the trick.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see what works. Whatever this thing is it's pretty fucking devious-- whenever I do a Google search and click on a link, it takes me somewhere else. The link on the Google page and the link I end up do not match, also all the links on Google take me to the same false page. Said false page is constructed to look like what I'm looking for (for instance, my COA isn't working for my Windows disk, so it took me to a place where I could download some file that would fix that, complete with comments from people saying things like "this worked great, thanks!")

If you decide to go with Malwarebytes, some say it's best to use that from Safe Mode with Networking. I did that and it worked perfectly. You could download a malwarebytes installer from a portable device (if possible) and transfer it over while you're in safe mode, or download it from safe mode with networking. Firefox worked fine within safe mode where it didn't normally when I had a tricky worm (any program activation would load up a fake virus found or unsafe program alert).

Alright, here's where I'm at right now:

My computer is a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. The screen has been broken for a couple months now (when I get a spare $100 I'll get a new one on eBay), so I've been using a ten year old desktop monitor. I tried to run some virus scanning programs in safe mode, but I can't run safe mode with the spare monitor (pressing function + f8 doesn't work once safe mode gets going. I'm guessing that's one of the things safe mode doesn't run because it's not vital). In desperation I tried to reformat, but I can't boot from the damn CD. If there's a "press any key to boot from CD" message I can't see it (the function + f8 trick doesn't work until after such message is shown) and any spamming of keys while booting up just takes me to the safe mode selection screen. I can't install Windows while my computer is on because my COA isn't working (my guess is it's because the COA is already being used-- were I to clear my hard drive and do an actual reformat it might work, but again, can't boot from CD).

So the tl;dr version is: I need to fix my laptop using a monitor but it looks like it doesn't want to let me. What are my options?

If the BIOS supports changing your boot options, have you tried disabling the HDD as the boot device or changing the boot order? It might be set to the first, ruling out any booting from CD.

Alright, to get to the BIOS screen I need to press F2 on a Dell, but it refuses to use my spare monitor while on the BIOS screen.

On top of all this, my system has now become pretty much unusable due to a worm or something. Using the family Mac at the moment. I need a way to completely erase my C drive permanently and start fresh. The problem is I can't use the laptop's monitor.
