evilhamwizard.....awesome! Keep up the good work and keep us posted! I can't believe how much of a mess this has been. I wonder if any other game had nearly the amount of individual music contributions as Sonic 3(&K). Was the S&K Miniboss which replaces S3's when connected also created by Howard Drossin? The strange thing is that the music DOES exist in Sonic 3 (alone), unlike the newer Knuckles theme. I'm still thankful for the Sonic 2 cart swap trick to experience this from the real hardware (love programmers who build upon instead of always building from scratch).

Swap cart is dangerous! (telling from own experience). But if you can do it without any problems, can you test if it is possible to do the debug mode in Sonic 1, and swap it with Sonic & Knuckles to get debug there as well? Both share the same RAM cheat addresses, so I would really like to know! EDIT: Just remembered it will not work because the RAM initialization signature is different. Sonic 1 to Sonic 3 uses "init", while Sonic & Knuckles uses "sm&k".

None of the S&K boss music has any proper credits.

Just as well because my Genesis is safely tucked away about 4 hours north of where I live and I don't own S&K in cart form :/

So! I was hearing Sonic Drift 2 soundtrack and the invincible is from Sonic 3! And only 2 people of the Sega Sound Team were credited in the game! Masayuki Nagao and Saori Kobayashi... So this more or less confirms it was a Sega Sound Team song?

No, actually I forgot to mention that in my last post. I did talk to Nagao about it and he said that Saori Kobayashi rearranged those S3 tracks for Drift 2 but she didn't do the originals. I also talked to M.Setsu and he programmed the Data Select theme, but he doesn't know who did the original either. He did arrange the theme again for Sonic Jam, though.

Speaking of Sonic Drift 2, he said that Saori Kobayashi did this track for the game as well.

Yeah, I somewhat knew they probably didn't make the theme BUT it was someone from Sega team, because they did that in Drift 1 too with "You can do anything" which WAS made by the sega sound team and was only arranged by NGee for the game.

(Just because I saw some people mentioning the S3 theme being by MJ).

OH! -Ok removed Scirroco's contact link :P-

Was there an avalanche with Brenda? O.o Poor thing xD! Removed anyway. I just thought it would be interesting to talk with him anyway. They are very accessible, I for example talked with Jun Senoue, not asking or anything just congratulating for his awesome work with Chemical Plant remix <3.

Given the ambiguity of that second “he”, you may not have meant this, but Saori Kobayashi ain't a dude!

Yep, back in last century when I was the one conducting the interviews, I made the mistake of posting Brenda's contact info, without realising that the forums had already become way too popular to be sharing that kind of info. Poor thing, indeed...

Can you get an MP3 or a video link for the invincibility theme? I can't find it anywhere, only Sonic Drift's.

Nagao was involved with rearranging and programming songs into the game. He doesn't remember actually composing any songs, but he does remember arranging Hydrocity Act 2. He told me he "produced" almost half the songs for the game, but I'm not too sure what this means.

That "half" you mentioned sounds like the exact conclusion I came to (I call it the S3 half). Angel Island, Marble Garden, Chrome Gadget, Desert Palace and Final Boss all share that same sound, whereas the other half (the S&K half) also shares a common sound in Azure Lake, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Sandopolis, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and that game's Act 1 boss theme, which I've likened to Sawada based on how it sounded. The S&K half is much, much stronger than the S3 half connection-wise.

He told me that the Sonic 3 main theme was possibly done by Masafumi Ogata and was somewhat a rearrangement of the original Sonic 1/2 theme. He later told me that Ogata contributed the theme song for Sonic Drift (not sure which one, can't remember at the moment) and Nagao arranged it - but he didn't get credit for it. He also told me that Uwabo was his boss, and Sachio Ogawa and Ogata were both colleagues of his at the time.

I would have never thought of comparing S3's main theme to S1/S2's like that. Even if he's mistaken about the composer, he still knows more than the rest of us, and he knows for a fact about Ogata's involvement in Sonic Drift, so there's reason for him to be right about S3 as well. The "theme from Sonic Drift" that Ogata composed has to be the Title theme. "Title" and "theme" tend to be interchangeable, isn't that right Sonic?

Maeda also contributed music, Senoue did as well. Milpo contributed one song only and programmed the driver, Setsu did programming, arrangement, and sound effects.

Going back to the 10th Anniversary CD, we now have one and only one for both Kashima (Special Stage) and Drossin (S&K Title). Combine that with Angel Island's lack of credit as seen in Generations (which I believe is done by Nagao [as I mentioned above], then a former Sega employee) and the S3 main theme (S3 Title) supposedly composed by Masafumi Ogata (who also left Sega by then), and that leaves Sawada with Sky Sanctuary once more. Sky Sanctuary, like every confirmed S3&K track so far, hasn't received a soundtrack release yet, so hopefully an OST for Generations can link Sawada to SS.

Setsumaru only arranging is fine with me, as I've pretty much figured out the extent as to what he arranged: Drossin compositions and All Clear jingles (Setsumaru arranged the Ending for Sonic 3D (MD), which is basically that game's All Clear jingle, and even has the same little bell jingle lead-in at the beginning as both S3 and S&K's.

For anyone not familiar with Sonic Drift 2's music, "those" also refers to this one, which uses the S3&K Act 2 boss theme.

I came to that conclusion myself based on the vibrant style of that and other tracks (Kobayashi) and the no-thrills, near-monotone tracks that were similar to the original game's (Nagao).

Confirming Emerald Ocean is interesting because its inflections are the same as both Emerald Hill and Balloon Panic (Emerald Hill and Balloon Panic also have almost the exact same composition [like Mystic Cave and Quake Cave])

Here's how the inflections in all three basically go (Bear with me on this, I'm no music major, just a good ear)
1st set: Upward, Upward, Upward
2nd set: Upward, Upward, high/held Upward
3rd set: Downward, Downward, Upward to straight
...
4th set: Upward, Upward, Upward (Emerald Hill and Emerald Ocean)
or
4th set: Upward, Upward, Upward, Upward (Balloon Panic)

Awesome news to me!

The Data Select theme is one of the best there is, and knowing who arranged it (and the responsible for the 45 minutes bug, hehe) is half the secret! I want more information from Setsumaru-san!
But who was the super composer of the Data Select? This is so damn interesting. We are getting closer to the truth than ever before.

Is all the information you know getting wikified? Perhaps there should be a page like "Sonic 3 & Knuckles Soundtrack Confirmed/Well-Supported Credits". You could have a table with information about composer, arrangers, programmers, etc.

Isn't City Escape Classic a Cash Cash track, though?

They sang autotone for that (and now also Super Sonic Racing), and I remember it being said from Senoue's Twitter that Cash Cash arranged it, which fits since it has their sound and also because of how vocal tracks like that were managed for Sonic Heroes (for This Machine and Team Chaotix). With the existence of the "Mission 2" track, however, at least now we know that combining Endless Mine and City Escape together couldn't have been solely Cash Cash's idea since a clearly Senoue-done track, guitar and all (where one of two themes is once again a Senoue definite) is done without Cash Cash and their vocals, and even goes from one right into the other this time. Another instance of Senoue combining two compositions is for Super Sonic (Live & Learn and Sonic 4's Invincible). This one's 100% his, so keep that in mind.

A bigger mystery to me is whether the Classic versions of Speed Highway and Seaside Hill are still done by Senoue. I'll wait for the in-game staff roll for that and everything else, since I'm expecting quite a few more names to show up under "Music Composer." (Ohtani, Tokoi, Maeda, Kobayashi and Nakagawa [and perhaps Sawada if we're lucky]).
[[EDIT: Only Ohtani and Tokoi from the above set made it, along with Yutaka Minobe and Richard Jacques (as Richard Jacques Studios).]]

To get somewhat back to the thread topic, this is the closest we're gonna get to a confirmation that Senoue did Balloon Park and Endless Mine at least until an OST drops, and anyone who says HC and MG are from MJ's side of the yard should call it quits. They've been reused in an official game. It's over.

This is from last page, but I just wanted to point out that Aaron Webber mentioned during one of the demos of Generations that he did (might have been Gamespot?) that he spoke to one of the members of Cash Cash and that he was a huge fan who grew up with the games and was responsible for the Endless Mine part of the song.
