There's a theme in Fantasy Zone which is used for the parts shop. It sounds a bit like this:

Fantasy Zone Gear has it too, and I imagine Super Fantasy Zone does if you enable the "classic" music.

I came across a factoid somewhere which stated that Hot Rod borrowed it, which turned out to be correct. I figured it was just a bit of laziness on Sega's part with the idea that nobody would notice.

But today I found something - the same tune is used in Turbo OutRun for its part shop. And it's also in Super Hang-On

is this some crazy Sega tradition... do we know if there are any other games which borrow this theme?

Am I retro if I was thinking of Fantasy Zone just from seeing the thread title from forum index? :V

Although that's a little coincidental... I mean, OutRun definitely was a more well-known franchise back then. Maybe it's because Fantasy Zone had more music that stood out.

Isn't it funny that it's always a shop theme?

Were all the games by the same composer?

FZIIDX uses it in the first level's shop as well.

Not in the case out Super Hang-On actually; I don't think Hiroshi Kawaguchi did anything for that game other than the shop theme in question. But I'd definitely have to check to be sure.

They just used to insert many references to other SEGA games back then, I don't think the composer needs to be the same one.

And Fantasy Zone in particular. Opa-Opa (the weird little winged ship) is a character in Zillion, and the main theme is used in Phantasy Star 4 (in the infamous dancing girls scene) and is called "Pao-Pao" in the sound test.

Also in either Parlour Games or Casino Games (I forget which) if you don't specify a name and specify yourslef as male you're Mr. Opa-Opa...

Yeah I was thinking this was more cross-referencing; I guess that's the most logical explanation then :/

I must confess that I was introduced to Opa-Opa in Arnold Palmer's Tournament Golf. :v:

That's a good man. BGM #1 is the best music ever, by the way.

I distinctively recall hearing the parts music in two other games, one on Genesis and another on Saturn, but I have forgotten both!

Segagaga has a version of the shop theme, too (@0:23)

And Planet Harriers, when you're playing as Opa Opa (@2:18)

It's in GP Riders too.

I remixed it for Streets of Rage Remake but it ultimately wasn't used.

I remember us having a conversation about the shop music on the SoRR forums a long time ago. In fact, I think it might have been me that suggested that song should be used. Shame it wasn't, I liked your remix for it.
