Ok, so a few weeks ago I would have agreed and backed up that the new generation (Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Heroes) sucked. This is because I listened to what everyone else had said about it and the games sounded so terrible I didn't even want to take a look at the box art.

    Then I got broadband.

I downloaded Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, and Shuffle for my dreamcast. Sonic Adventure is really, really cool. (I agree that Sonic Shuffle was a waste of download time). I enjoyed them so much that I've played them through 2 times each now.

Then I saw Sonic Heroes for Xbox 2nd hand for $29 (Australian Moolah). So I got it. Holy crap! This was something new in the history of Sonic games! Ever since Sonic 3 & Knuckles have I wondered if Sonic Team would think about Tails lifting Sonic and Knuckles at the same time. And they finally did it!

Also, while playing Sonic Heroes, I realised why most new Sonic fans (people who only know Sonic from SA:2 Battle from their Gamecubes onwards) like Shadow so much. Its the only game mode in Sonic Heroes that doesn't have instructions on how to jump. =P

Don't give me none that "Sega's only making the games for money" bullshit, becasue when they made Sonic 1, do you honestly think they produced it for the game, and not the money?

    Discuss.

EDIT: Just forgot to say that I have the "Classics" edition of Sonic Heroes, and it seems to have very little bugs.

I know your going to be like "wtf is wrong with you?" but as long as a game has something to do with Sonic I usually like it. Besides games like Sonic's Schoolhouse.

Yeah, I agree. I'm tired of jumping the fucking bandwagon -- The new games like SA/SA2, and even Heroes, kick major ass. Just because 2D savvy bastards don't like them, doesn't mean we shouldn't either.

My only criteria is fun. I don't find most of the newer games fun; ergo, I think they suck donkey anus. The most recent games I enjoyed were SA1 and SAd1.

Heroes? Don't even get me started. Too "stop-and-go", and I did play it for more than just a few minutes. Too many times, you get going good, only to have to stop completely in order to change active characters.

    Bleh.

Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast kicked ass, as did SA2 (let's just skip over Shuffle shall we? :P). SA2:B was pretty good as well... it is mostly SA:DX and SH I don't like. For SA:DX, I shall quote thy famous Green Gibbon.

The original was good enough; all SA:DX has in its merit is that it has shinier, higher polygon count characters. Only reason I have this is because my Dreamcast broke.

Heroes sucks. The camera still tends to hate you with a passion and hinders every attempt you make to move. "HAY WHERE SONIC GO?". The new dialogue is just annoying; add Tails's new voice in and it drives you to the verge of suicide. The gameplay gets really old really fast - wait until you've done the SAME FUCKING THING for the third time. Of course, then Sonic and co. look like they've become glass, because they shine like the Sun. I will give it that in some ways (mostly level architecture and level order (it's similar to the old Act 1 -> Act 2 -> Boss setup)) it is more like the older games, but it is a helluva lot less fun and more buggy/annoying. The team setup is also annoying. You see a rail, go speed character! Oh snaps, there is a balloon above the rail! We must switch to fly, then sacrifice all the speed we gained so that we can slow down and grab the balloon, because it is a Team Blast that you otherwise wouldn't have going in to an area full of bots! OH SHIT, there's a fan, screw the balloon, I have to switch to power or else I won't make it! Oh crap, bots... lots of bots... that take ten hits? When did they get so strong? And they all are firing at me and I get shot and the crazy collision in the game sends me hurling THROUGH the platform I would have landed on and I fall in to one of the game's seemingly infinite bottomless pits.

Oh? I enjoyed Sonic Heroes, mainly because I had just run through Halo 2 in legendary and wanted a rest from those extreme thought games. Sonic Heroes is there for me when I want a relaxed night of video games.

It's not whether or not one oldschool game is better than one newschool game... I don't think it's a fair comparison. They're two different things, and which, if any, is better is just a personal preference pertaining to the type of game enjoyed by the individual.

You say this like me and other people have a grudge against 3D games in general, for crying out loud I have Half-Life, Day of Defeat, GTA Vice City and San Andreas, I have Oddworld Strangers wrath, Halos 1 and 2, I have a bunch of 3D games, I love the 3D games, but when you give me a game like Sonic Heros, which no matter how much you say other wise, was shit on the XBOX, just plain shit, I'm gonna say the game sucks. I have listed my reasons for hating the game and you can't accept my reasonings, fine, I don't care. As for SA 1+2, I have never tried SA1+2 so I have never commented on them.

SA is awesome, and SA2 just fuckin' PWNS the Sonic franchise.

In my opinion, SA2:B will never hold as much respect as the original SA2. Why's that? Well, again, in my opinion, I believe Sonic games should be played ONLY on SEGA CONSOLES. I am a big fan of Nintendo, and PS2 is pretty good with a few games... (Don't get me started on XBox... bastards took the DC's control configuration...)

However, I believe Sonic was only meant for Sega, and no other system... but that's just me.

    SA > *.
SA2... is not as good as SA for some reason. I just don't really like it as much.
SH is cool too. The only problem it has is the lack of replay value.

I personally love all 3. The storylines are good (Some of Heroes less so, but hey) and I cannot really complain about much. I love some of the current-gen stuff as much, if not more so, than some of the old games.

Camera problems? Nope, I've only ever had one, and I just quit the game, played it again and it was fine.
Voice Acting? Yep, Tails sucked in SH, but hey, it wasn't too bad.
Switching in SH? Easy. Just easy. It takes about a second to switch, and it doesn't need to be done too often, and nowhere near the extent Guess Who suggested.

Because it was made after 1994.

And you downloaded Sonic Adventure etc.? Why not buy them legit-ly? The producers are still making money off SA through the PC ports and so on, as opposed to downloading ROMs no-one cares about any more.

Although I've probably just opened up another can of worms with that statement. Oops.

Anyway, seconding the unfairness of comparing games made in 1991 and games made in 2004.

My encounter with the so-called new-school Sonic Games was Sonic Advance 3

    What can I say?
Sound ... don't like it, not memorable, but that's personal preference
Graphics... don't like it either, too mario-ish, but again, that's personal preference and doesn't count.

But looking at the level design ... simply confusing, mazy, not very well thought of (compared to Sonic CD for example)

And now there's the game mechanics
Reaching the first lever with the stone on it in Route99, I thought wtf??
From the experience of S1 and S2, I had expected the rock to be thrown up with different force depending on Sonic's falling speed and his position on the lever, just like in real world.
But what did actually happen? That stupid thing was always thrown to the same height, no matter if I tapped the lever close to the hinge or slammed it full speed.
Do we really need to take 10+ years to come this "far"?

Next thing, it's Tails this time.
I flew into an up and down moving platform in sunset hill from below. The poor bastard got stuck in the platform and it wouldn't release him until it travelled up again. I mean, come on, I'd seen such behavior on a crappy Game Maker Sonic fangame, but this is a commercial game!
I didn't get further since I switched it off, the submarine(?) level was just boring so I quitted half way.

And don't even get me started at the collision or rather lack of it.

All those things make or break a jump and run game, and SA3 miserably fails at them, being technically inferior to any old school Sonic game. (well, except for sonic spinball perhaps, but that wasn't a jump and run game hence it didn't matter that much)

    edit: typos

Sonic Adventure 1 rocked. Sonic Adventure 2 was the best sequel to a game I've ever played, amazing game.

Heroes, I broke my keyboard over.

Shadow, looks cool. I probably just won't buy it due to principle, moral problems.

Gems collection, wow, now there's a game collection. No chaotix though.

    Heroes, is just so frusturating.

    Amen.

    You may just be right.
I play the Adventure games when I want 3D Sonic. I play the Genesis or Advance games when I want 3D Sonic. I play Heroes when I want to listen to What I'm Made Of and can't be arsed to boot mp my PSP.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Heroes, but it just doesn't quite have the same replay value as the other games. The first time through, I thought it was great, but I don't think I've played Hang Castle since I first beat it. Of course, kicking Metal Overlord's ass is always fun, even if it's made fun in a large amount by the existance of the aforementioned C40 song.
And I, too, constantly fail to figure out what everyone thinks about SAdv3. Much of it is largely a matter of opinion (I.e., gameplay, graphics, music, etc.) except that it seems that a good number of the members here treat their opinions as set-in-stone laws, especially those opinions that pertain to SAdv3. Personally, I like SAdv3. The teamwork theme, IMO, is not as overused as it is in Heroes, and adds nicely to the gameplay without absorbing too much of it. The graphics, though a slight bit more block-based than earlier Sonic games' (e.g., the presence of little actual snow in Twinkle Snow Zone, and its replacement with light blue and white blocks), are also nice, to me anyway. IMO, the music is a well-structured mix of original music done in an old-school style, original music done in a Sonic Battle-like style, and remixes of music from a wide variety of games, including Sonic 1, SA2, and Battle.

Sonic Adventure had amazing gameplay. It was just as good as the trillogy itself. It was just what we needed after all of the slowness with Sonic X-Treme and everything.

Sonic Adventure 2, it wasn't as fun to play as the first, but it was a diffirerent kind of game. It was much darker and more plot heavy. Shadow and even Rouge were at the time good characters to introduce, because at the time, it wasn't like very new game/collection pumped out tree new characters. It was a fresh idea. It came and went, with nothing but Gamecube ports and collections to follow. During this time, the next new game was a great expectation. All the hype brought us the nest new game; A game that was sure to be a great success. ...Heroes.

Sonic Heroes, it was awefull. There's no gameplay at all. You go forward. If you hit a wall, you won't stop or bump into it , you just keep going forward. It was supposed to return to Sonic's roots. I don't remeber too many levels that were 80% bottemless pits in sonic's roots. Or for that matter, having to stop and switch formation. A final boss that can only be hit with Team Blast? How cheap is that. The glossy shine is unbearable. The CGI cutscenes weren't too hot either. No Japanese voices on the GCN version. And to wrap it all up, there's no storyline development to hide the how bad the game is like it did with SA2. Heroes fails at life.

From Heroes forward, everything went downhill... No scratch that. It just fell straight down a verticle line. The Adventure games were both good in their own respect, but then Heroes absolutely sucked. And nothing after that has been much better.

There're also little things that just shows how cheap Sega have been being, such as the emulation in SMC (Which they avoided in SGC, good for them).

As for new games, I don't see anything bright.

    Shadow the Hedgehog:
It the same thing as Heroes, only even further away from Sonic's "roots" than before. I don't see a single Green Hill in there. >:{ It uses the same engine, with the same flaws. Same crap moddels, same crap shine. Shadow looks like an idiot rolling around with a gun 3x the size of his body, let alone the initial gun concept itself.

    Sonic Rush:
I don't know. The boss fights look okay, but the levels aren't even 3D like the boss fights. That's something they most certainly could've done with only seven levels in the game. The gameplay is Sadv 2 with a boost to give you EVEN FASTER SPEED OMGBBQ. Blaze and the Sol Emeralds are another retarded character per game twist. I really can't say anything about the game yet, but knowing Sega, I shouldn't get my hopes up.

    Sonic Riders:
Air boards. Stop trying to make Sonic cool, because it's not working. Three new characters. That's overkill if I ever did see it. Even MAKING a sequel to Sonic R is a good idea though.

The only real hope I have is for the Next-Gen Sonic. It is said to be based on the tech demo, which was pretty interactive.
