http://mynintendonews.com/2012/03/14/sega-says-sonic-is-the-right-fit-for-wii-u/ Takashi Iizuka recently told Eurogamer that he believes Sonic is the right fit for the Wii U, he also revealed that he would like to return to the 3D Sonic style for the next generation consoles. Here's a small excerpt from the article. "But I'm also interested in the challenge of doing something completely new with the 3D Sonic's forward view platform action, and bring something new to the table with that as well.” “I don't think Sonic will ever become photo-real. I think Sonic will always remain stylised and will have that bright, colourful world. What the high hardware spec will allow us to do is make that more convincing.” “I feel Sonic is the right fit because it is that kind of family experience game. I do feel Wii U is applicable to Sonic. But how we will apply using the controller to Sonic is something we're still thinking about at the moment.” What do you think?
I liked Unleashed's sense of being realistic yet cartoony at the same time, I loved it. '06 just... tried too hard.
I'd better see PC ports of main titles. That's really all I care about, but I understand if Wii U gets exclusives. I'm not fucking buying any more consoles.
No, that's a gameplay style. No realism means getting more Unleashed/Colors/Generations styled environments and less Sonic 2006 styled ones. I'd be cool with that. The gameplay style and the surreal take of real environments help the series in forming its own voice again. Iizuka there already says he wants to keep the Modern Sonic style of gameplay going. Yes, yes, the adage of "HOLD X TO WIN LOL" is going to get thrown around, but we've seen that with some refinements and/or additional gameplay modifications that the style can work well. Unleashed and Generations, though moreso Generations, lend themselves to be easily speedran and then there was the whole addition of the 30-second Challenge, which is absolutely brilliant despite being so simple. Meanwhile, Colors keeps the basic formula, but uses Wisp transformations to slow down the gameplay to give the player the chance to slow down and explore or, in some cases, use the power to reach new paths. No, it's not the classic Sonic formula, but if refinements continue to be made like this to the modern formula while trying to keep stage ideas fresh and interesting, I'll certainly accept more modern Sonic gameplay.
Good to see they haven't totally forgotton Nintendo then. After not getting Sonic Generations (console version), Sonic CD or Sonic 4 Epsiode II, as well as having the Sonic games taken off the VC store, I think they're gonna need to owe us Nintendo gamers.
I just hope there WILL be some locations inspired by the existing in the real world locations. There are a hell lot of places in the real world that would look amazing in a Sonic game. I hope he means by that that threre will be games with 3D gameplay only. I think that 2D should be left to 2D games. I love Seaside Hill in Generations and some other parts of other levels that have 3D gameplay only.
I kinda agree with that. Sonic CD was entirely Nintendo's fault, as was S4EII. Sonic Generations could have been pulled off on the Wii, but they were just lazy.
I'd bet it was more of a financial decision than a laziness decision. I'm sure they'd have to make a modified/different game for the Wii so it could function for that console, like they did with Unleashed. SEGA appears to be making a lot of decisions that are affected from the Wii's limited capabilities vs. what the PS3/360 can do. The Wii U may end this cycle.
I've been wondering, since there's gonna be more emphasis on 3D, could this mean... A RETURN TO THE ADVENTURE FORMULA? :O
This is practically non-news. A Sonic game will be on a new console? With better graphics, even? What an unexpected miracle! More emphasis on 3D? How do you figure? Just because a game is going to be on marginally more powerful hardware? The gameplay of Unleashed/Colors/Generations stemmed not from hardware limitations but from a specific design choice. Also, while it will be more powerful, it's not like the WiiU is going to represent a quantum leap over the current HD consoles. Also, the supposed "Adventure formula" is shit. Sorry.
Well I can almost guarantee the hedgehog engine shall be ported over. Similar hardware = similar graphic engine. Only they'll take time to refine it more. As for the adventure formula, it'd be great if the Adventure games didn't have the worlds most boring level design (How bout them straight line zones)
The first "right fit" game will probably be Generations with a couple of extra bits, some extra scenes and mabye a level so the story feel a bit more fluid, Its the easyest way to make some launch day money. It worked with SA2B on the Gamecube, that was in the top 10 saleswise I think, so I don't see why they can't do it again.
