    I understand where you are coming from. .BIN files would just be standard binary data files (as you find with many other roms) and has no proprietary extension. I would assume that the .SMD format is used as it would be the direct output from the Super Magic Drive device and therefore would be released as is (untampered).

    Regarding .Gen and .MD - I always assumed these were pretty much custom made extensions presumably to easily differentiate PAL / NTCS games from one another without checking the file name or header.

    Much of my post is assumptions and am 100% confident others will be better informed than me but I completely understand your rant. Personally, I would prefer everything to be in .BIN format - but that is purely preference.

    I'm actually quite indifferent to the Create-A-Character gimmick. I understand and respect the appeal for it but will probably personally never use it.

    Seriously though, this looks pretty cool so I'll have to give it a look in time but I'll admit, I thought it was going to be a Sonic / WWE crossover when I read the thread title.

    I hope this isn't against the rules - since the links on the OP no longer appear to be valid, does anyone have a collection of the 3D models within generations in the .model format (and any animations) - the only ones I have found are in .DAE format which don't seem to want to play ball properly with 3DS Max (they have broken skinning and the textures don't import correctly).

    After much of a delay, I wanted to present my findings.

    RetroArch is amazing! I was originally attempting to achieve this using a different portable media player which could boot and play emulators but sadly hit a pitfall very much like my original post whereby it didn't feel like a smooth seamless transition and felt more like a tacky bootloader. RetroArch however seems to integrate emulators seamlessly into the interface and works smoother and quicker, which is a bonus.

    I guess it's mission accomplished so I'm happy for this thread to be locked or disposed of however the mods see fit :)
