  1. Unlimited Trees' Sonic 1 (EARLY Christmas Demo)

    18 December 2016 - 06:58 PM

Oh look, a cross post from SSRG. Great. Now before I go on, let me say just one little thing:

READ THIS ENTIRE POST SO YOU CAN UNDERSTAND SHIT
Unlike in that one thread I shall not mention, I'm not gonna shove this message in your face with tons of curse words that the puny brain can handle, so without further ado, let's get into this.

So, it all starts after the contest week. Seeing the responses from Pepsi in Sonic 1, I felt disappointed in myself. I proved that I can create good level layouts (as shown with my shiny new Lava Reef Trophy), but everything else about the hack, as well as my other entries still showed that I was an immature cunt who was still an idiot. So right after the contest, I started working on this hack. My goal: Make the best hack anyone has ever seen in awhile. I know this won't be the best (as we all know Markey already has the description for best hacker ever), but I want to make something that is both new and great. So after only 2 months in, this hack is in it's early moments. Lot's of stuff unfinished, from art to level layouts and other stuff. There's also a few problems, but we'll go into that in a bit. So, I was able to get 4 levels into the game. Only 2 of them are good enough to be considered passable, while 1 is still very unfinished while the other is just bad to the point where I'm going to redo it from scratch. So, let's get into all the zones in this game, shall we?

    Egg Plant Zone:
The first level of the game, this is what happens when Eggman gets his hands on Green Hill Zone. Anyways, this zone sucks. HARD. I hate this zone as it currently is in this demo. The art is extremely unfinished as well as it being bad (pillow shading hell). The only reason I left it in was because 1) the level layouts were already done by the time I decided to pull the plug, and 2) I didn't have enough time to import all the art AND get all of the zone art done. So what we have here is a zone which should only be played for it's level layouts. Note that Act 3's BG was never made and it's just a mess. I never got around to doing it. So, I recommend skipping this zone. Note that the music was going to be an Act 2/3 thing, but because of some inside problems with some of the people making music for this, the song we needed never got finished. Here's a mockup of what this level will look like in the future.
    Marble City Zone:
A city which was built ontop of a volcano. This level is the most unfinished level, with only the basic art completed, with tons of stuff still needed to be done. Only check out this zone if you want to look at the art.

    Desert Dazzle Zone:
Now this isn't even hiding the fact I'm copying the Taxman. Basically, this is Desert Dazzle. It's a desert level... but flooded with water. Level layout is pretty basic and might be redone. Some art needs to be done.

    Green Hill Zone:
So Sonic has finally broken GHZ of Eggman's grasp, and now he can go through it normally. This is the last level in the game, and it contains the best song ever, Green Hills Zone. Only Act 1 is complete.

    BUGS/PROBLEMS:
-Problem with Special stage sending you back to beginning of level, even if you hit lamppost you will start right at the beginning of the level.
-Speed shoes music not restarting music up
-Some problems with pathswappers, mostly in Egg Plant
-Egg Plant Act 3 not having any new background
-A few palette stuff I need to change
-the DAC in Joenick's songs being all messed up
-Some other stuff I forgot to mention

One thing I need to say is if you want to do a video of this, please ask me on a PM. I hate how people just take hacks when they are very early in development and just upload them to an audience of over a thousand, and don't even link them to the thread and just sends them to the download.

Oh, and um, here's some credits:
-Various guides on SSRG and Retro for helping with stuff
-the people who worked on SonED2 and SonLVL
-Markey's fabulous Sonic 1 Two-Eight disasm for being the greatest
-The people who worked on SonMapEd (why did I use this for importing tiles why)
-Selbi's cool Sonic 1 Text Generator thing which I used to pull the broken title cards out of my ass.
-The people at SSRG's discord for some help with stuff
-Everything else in this hack was done by me, besides music which the credits for each song can be seen in song list.

Download (because I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO ADD IT WHEN I FIRST MADE THIS THREAD): https://cdn.discorda...y_Demo_BETA.zip

Please don't say anything about Egg Plant Zone. By the time this is posted I'm gonna be getting rid of all the art and level layouts and replacing it with the new art. I appreciate any criticism, as I want this hack to be better, but just don't talk about Egg Plant Zone. I know it's bad and I don't need to be reminded.
  2. Pepsi in Sonic 1 Thread

Looks like I'm a trial member. Anyways, please refer to me as Unlimited Trees, as my username here is terrible and I wish I never made it.

Pepsi in Sonic 1 is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by Unlimited Trees (a.k.a HorriblePerson on Sonic Retro). It is a parody hack of a lot of ROM hacks out there, which is why there are things such as horrible level "designs", generic palettes, and the usual character switch. This ROM hack features 6 full length zones (plus bonus stages), 3 (+1) playable characters, and many art edits and secrets!

    LEVELS

    Not Green Hill Zone:
NGHZ is my totally origianl level! It has a cool sunset pallete! It has level layouts!!!! It has boss changes!!!!!!

    Cola Mountain Zone:
Deep within the Coca Cola-filled South Island lies a bunch of secret ruins. The Coca Cola company decided to "change" the level layouts by making them totally not similar to stock Sonic 1.

    Dimps Place Zone:
The Coca Cola company had built a mall in the middle of South Island. Being the cool
Pepsi lover that you are, you must stop this madness and go through Dimps-esque design choices such as springs when they are not needed, bottomless pits, automated sequences, and more!

    Labenenth Zone:
Do you like water? Do you like having to suffer through tideous platforming sections with little to no "GOTTA GO FAST!!!11!!" moments? Well this zone is for you! This includes a very cool palette change and other shit. Note that there are no bubbles, and you have to rely on the shield's abilty to allow you to breathe underwater.

    Pepsi City Zone:
The place where Pepsi lovers live, Pepsi City is well known for it's appearence in Pepsiman for the PS1. Of course, we can't recreate a 3D level in a 2D side scroller, so we give you Star Light Zone but with different level layouts and palettes!!!

    Coca Cola Land Zone:
Strange title, I know. This is the heart of the Coca Cola Company. Beat this zone, and you win at life. Lose, and you are a fucking loser.

    CHARACTERS

    Pepsi Can:
It is a Pepsi Can. Not much to explain. It's the standard character. It can jump, roll, go fast, etc. It can perform the Shield-Double-Jump move by pressing the jump button in the air.

    Pepsiman:
If you press 'B' during the title screen, you can play as Pepsiman! He's basically the hard mode of the game. He can't jump/roll into enemies, and he needs to have inviniciblty to kill the boss battles (except for Finale Zone). Pepsiman can breathe underwater without a shield, he can perform the Shield-Double-Jump, and he can't take damage from Eggman monitors.

    Classic Sonic:
If you enter the level select code, THEN press B during the title screen (do this before you enter the level select), you can play as Classic Sonic, who is a special character for Sonic's 25th anniversary. He is the only one who can perform the Drop Dash (a move based off the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania), which works by jumping then holding 'B' until you hit the ground. With this move, you can access secret areas. Classic Sonic can't perform the Sheild-Double-Jump.

There is also a secret bonus character. How do you get him? Well, you could try to beat the game with all chaos emeralds. And, who knows? Maybe the C button will be useful one day....

    NEW FEATURES

    Bonus Stages:
Basically just the Sonic 1 special stages except the Chaos Emeralds have been replaced with 1-Up blocks. You can't get emeralds here (though you can still look at the emeralds you have), but....

    Emerald Monitor:
Emerald Monitors replace the Special Stages. They are hidden in every act besides FZ, and when you hit one you get an Emearld. If you hit an emerald monitor after having all 6 emeralds, you can gain an extra life.

    Shield Powers:
The shield has a double jump move. The Sheild also allows you to breathe underwater, as mentioned before.

    Drop Dash:
Using a modified version of the Spin Dash code from Sonic 2 Beta, Classic Sonic can perform the Drop Dash move from Sonic Mania. Just hold 'B' while falling/jumping, and it works. Note, that there's a bug where you would continue dashing forward after Sonic loses speed.

Also, hidden in some stages are S monitors. 2 require debug mode to get, while the rest can be achived using the shield and drop dash. What happens when you get the S monitor? Well, I heard that in some zones it plays a special sound, and maybe there is some waking up involved. I heard that in the last zone, you could get the 6 macguffins...

    Edit:

    Known bugs:

As Classic Sonic, after doing a drop dashing, if you hold 'B' while Sonic is slowing down, he'll dash forward again.
Some problems in NGHZ3 where a Pathswapper doesn't make a floor solid for some unexplained reason.
Orange water appears in title screen for a split second.
GHZ rocks have messed up graphics.
Pepsi Can and Pepsi Man can stand in place while holding 'B'
