Haven't seen anything about this on the main page, so do forgive me if it's old.

At the SCARZ forums, there was a topic about old ads from the Sega / Nintendo console wars. In that thread, a page got posted with lots of old TV ads in for Megadrive / Genesis games, among others. The Sonic 2 ad intrigued me, as it contained footage from a version that I for one hadn't seen before:

http://217.153.29.18...usa/sonic2.mpeg

There's a lot of evidence in the video pointing to the fact that this is taken from a much later prototype of Sonic 2:

1. The Title Screen

Posted Image Posted Image
Similar to (if not the same as) the title screen pictured in the Sonic 2 Manual, which I believe may also have come from this version. It's the same as the dumped proto, but with the 1 PLAYER and 2 PLAYER options at the bottom, in orange and white (coloured similarly to how Esrael recreated it in earlier versions of his Delta hack). There is evidence that this menu was probably functional, as the text reading 1 PLAYER changes between orange and white the first time you see it.

2. The Sonic Sprites

Posted Image
It's hard to see, but it looks like Sonic has his final Sonic 2 sprites in this proto, as in shots from other later prototypes.

3. Zone Graphics

Posted Image
Chemical Plant still has the same loops as in the dumped proto, with the sloping corners... (That weird garbled block is actually Tails flying BTW, it's just the low quality of the vid. Interesting to note that he can fly in this version, though).

However, Casino Night now has the same graphics set used in the final.

4. Special Stage

Posted Image
Is active. Not very important really, but I thought it worth mentioning since I haven't seen any shots of the Special Stages inamongst any proto shots I've seen.

5. Spindash

Posted Image
As you'd expect from a proto this late (having seen the pics of Sonic and Tails spindashing with dust trails in the proto Casino Night, I mean), the Spindash has the dust trails.

Also, an interesting glitch I found in this vid:

Posted Image
Tails' tails coming loose when fired from those cannon things in Oil Ocean. XD Just thought that one was worth noting.

Anyway, just thought that was a bit interesting. Like I said, I apologise if this is well-known. ^_^;

It's a VERY late beta though, I wouldn't think there'd be much interesting in it.

The sonic in the special stage looks like a lighter pallete I think that might be because of the poor quality and since when did sonic go under ground like a gopher?

(EDIT: Agh, damn me and taking so long to find the links to the topics and site again. x_x This was actually directed more at LOst and Quick Man's suggestions that this might be an April Fools' joke, but oh well).

Well, it isn't. I know my timing's unfortunate, being April 1st and all. xx; Maybe I shoulda waited until tomorrow to post this here..

Anyway, my original post on SCARZ was on 31st March; I can safely tell you this is not some cruel April Fools' joke. I already gave a link to the advert I took those shots from in my first post, so I won't bother with that again. The original site I found that advert on is here. And for those of you who are SCARZ members too, this topic is the one it was posted in, which is what brought the site to my attention in the first place. Oh, and the topic I made about this on SCARZ.

(On an unrelated side-note, it's a shame there isn't a better-quality version of the 3D Sonic CD ad they have on that site. That rocks).

Anyway, since that's the only proof I can give, and since I still have the damn fact that the date's April 1st hanging over my head, I'll shut up again now.

*looks at special stage picture*

I would think that it would say "Miles" instead of "Tails"...o.o; Unless this is an US prototype? :P

Well, the game was developed in the US, plus since this is a US commercial the system this footage was taken from would be set to "NTSC-US".

It looks like a hoax, I mean some emulators can mimic video footage, and all the person had ti do is get one real TV. pic and edited the game to look like a later beta so I'm not buying it.

Wait a little before you make judgements. It seems real, but if I've learned one thing form  the Sonic 1 beta hoax topic that Rika made, then it is to research out what you know before you make a final judgement.

Those screens don't look too fake to me. They all look pretty real. One looks like it's from Sonic 2 Beta, and the others look like the final. As said above, this is probably a late beta, and there isn't much of anything special to find in it.
