Yeah, I honestly don't believe its a hoax. I was just kinda there, while we were talking. And even then, we all agreed that we aren't accusing it of being a hoax, just neutrally examining evidence for the sake of it.

I feel pretty safe saying that drx would never rip thousands of dollars off people for a hoax.

I say it's probably real. The case label and the fact that it's probably equal to the Nick Arcade proto instead of something later like we expected are good.

I think if drx was trying to make a hoax of this, he would:
Make something that looks later than the wai proto.
Use the right level names on the level select.
Have all of the levels listed in the magazine.

Sure there's a concern about the sonic X-treme hoax, but wasn't that for April Fools?
Hasn't everything else he released been real?

  3. drx makes one wonderful contribution after another, and now you're saying that he may have fooled us? I can understand a suspicion (sp?) or two, but this is just fucking low.

If this is a hoax, then it's a damned good one. While I'm no hacker myself, I understand the degree of difficulty involved in making such an intricate ROM. There are easier hoaxes to make, folks.

So... does that mean WS is accessible in a similar way to HPZ (via Game Genie) in Sonic 2? Is it restorable in the same way as HPZ?

Yes, and it has been many, many times. =P

    Any level is restorable, really.

It's far too elaborate to be a hoax. I don't think the amount of work involved in creating a hack like this would be worth $1500 either.

With his focus on school, I doubt drx had the time to string this together.
Plus, he's been hanging out with the right crowd. Of course, it's entirely possible that he's spent a year or more building up his image off this board and "dumping" other fake betas just to get money from people. But that's too inconvenient and unlikely in comparison to the non-conspiracy route.

I'm looking it on a personal level rather than a technical level. It is pretty cool that folks consider it a possible that drx has that much cunning.

Well...I think, that this is not a hoax. I do not know drx personally, and only occasionally see him post and talk on IRC. I don't know if anyone has brought this up before besides ICEknight, but the demos say something. (Again, I'm sorry if anyone else has mentioned this, I haven't read the other thread entirely yet.)

Watch Wai's beta's demos. Sonic acts crazy in Hill Top Zone. Then, watch the demos in drx's beta. They're pretty much the same, and Sonic isn't acting crazy in drx's. He jumps on the teter totters in drx's perfectly, and makes the same motion in Wai's beta. I doubt he'd go to all the trouble and edit the levels EXACTLY like the demos when you leave your game unattended. Not to mention, having to make the levels like some of the screenshots in the magazines.

I can't really say much in his defense since I haven't looked at the code for either games, but I do believe him. (Plus, he seems like a really loyal person to this community with lots of friends, and I don't think anyone would purposely steal from their friends.)

Edit: Heh, the thing that says "YOU ONLY HAVE SO MANY POSTS LEFT" in red is gone for the trial member thing. =P

The other possibility is that drx was hoaxed, and has just lost $1500 to a hoaxer.

Anything is possible, but is it really plausible? Remember that we had this discussion in early 05, and Simon was quick to stress that. :P

Plus, the guy was simply a collector, nothing more. He wouldn't have even had the cart in his possession if it was fake - he would've hoarded the shit out of it.

Random thing occured to me - what if we all worked in USPS, UPS and FedEx? We could intercept packages sent to/recieved by collectors, and dump the shit inside.

Well of course a hoaxer would've claimed to be a collector...

Doesn't TheRedEye know who this guy is, though? I'm pretty sure he confirmed him to be a legit collector, and a hoarder in general to boot.

Well, I knew it had been restored many times. :P
I meant more like, most of the zone (ex:layout) remains but the graphics are gone and replaced with garbage. Because I've read plenty about accessing HPZ through a Genie, but have seen absolutely nothing pertaining to doing the same with Wood Zone. So my question is, what the heck does it do if you load it? What level's graphics is it attempting to load? Etc...

It loads Emerald Hill's level layout and graphics with buggy collision mappings, Wood Zone's palette, no objects or rings, and Metropolis's music.

There are two things that prove to me this isn't a hoax, and they're both previously unknown, but perfectly logical pieces of information I've found in the beta.

    1) HPZ3. This is not Labyrinth act 3, this is something else entirely. If you hit left at the start, you can get down into the normal level, and watch as the water level rises and falls to preset levels depending on where you are. That little forest of platforms way out of the way makes a lot more sense if the water line rises up there.

    2) Hill Top act 2 has a section where it is impossible to fall to your death, since the level actually will loop you from the bottom to the top. Ala, what Jan (I think? I could be misattributing this)) initially suspected about the lift in HPZ, that you were supposed to be sent from the top of the screen to the bottom. Again, for HPZ's case, how could they have pulled this off without a dynamic water level -- oh.

So... yes. I think it's legit. Also, happy fun bonus round:

    3) The Tails 1-up confirms that HPZ was made in earliest state of development. This isn't particularly impressive on its own, but in light of 1 and 2, both of which make sense in hindsight but are way too wacky for any hoaxer to come up with ... I'd say any additional evidence like this almost seals the deal.

(I'll do some pictures of HPZ3 and HTZ2 as soon as I have operational webspace again. Alternatively, someone else can do it. ;P)

  20. This hoax shit is making me sick. Again, anyone even thinking this is a hoax is really low. Hey, I have a theory! Wai's beta could be a hoax too! I mean, how do those level select names just so happen to be eerily simiar to magazine scans? That's fucking impossible! And c'mon...Dust Hill Zone, actually being Mystic Cave? Coincidence? I think not!

Hell...wa—wait a minute! The Sonic 3D Beta drx gave us has to be a fake too! I mean the game is just WAAAAY too similar to the final game. No level name changes, not too many art changes, and were there any enemy changes? What's that you say? The "E3 DEMO" title screen? That's bullshit! Anyone can hack some art! All of these prototypes are fucking hoaxes!! drx's, Wai's, and also drx's S3D Beta! How do we know if those "cart scans" are legit? Fuck, anyone can scan any old mockup cart label or EEPROM board! It all makes sense now! I officially conclude that these "prototype" release are nothing but bullshit mockups from very generous community members.

[/sarcasm, for those who haven't picked it up by now]
