Ok so I'm playing Sonic CD again. Gettin' time stones, savin' Amy, all that jazz.
Then something came to mind, what is the purpose (if any) for Metal Sonic's holograms?

Have they ever been explained? What do you think they're for?

They trap animals. Kill the Metal Sonic projector and the animals are free.

I always thought it was used just to scare the animals away.

    both sound pretty valid,
the first comment because destroying it I believe more animals show up in game (I could be wrong)
however there is the fact that they are just holographic images, so it could be acting almost as a scarecrow

You know I think that's why the projectors are there, to be scarecrows in order to lead the animals to the machines that mess everything up (The ones you smash in order to get the good future), also Dark Sonic I don't think they trap animals, that's what the machine-maker is for (I don't know what it's called).

I always thought that the holograms' purpose were to trick the animals in the stage into thinking Sonic had turned on them, making them too scared to run away and essentially becoming sitting ducks. Eggman's machine is far more easily explained -- it's a time machine Eggman conceived that allows him to send robots into the past, allowing him to rule over past, present and future. If you've never noticed, during the present there are two kinds of enemies -- old, broken down ones and brand new ones. The old ones are the ones who were sent there in the past, which disappear if you destroy the machine.

What isn't really explained is why are there no holograms in Metallic Madness. Yes, I know Metal Sonic is defeated at the end of Stardust Speedway, but I'm pretty sure the holograms weren't live broadcasts.

I've always thought their purpose was to scare the woodland creatures away... not for trapping them, that wouldn't make any sense even in Sonic's nonsensical world. =|

Ya but they don't fly back they kinda just pop up out of no where once The hologram's destroyed. Plus that hologram ain't that scary. It looks like Metal Sonic is being attacked by the animals.

Flicky is hopelessly trying to defend the squirrel. It's depicting a desperate situation for the little animals, so yes, it's supposed to be scary.

The CD re-release call them "teleporters" so it might be it, but seems to be more "space" travel than time-travel by that name.
I think some old western manuals called it Robotizers, which is self-explanatory in the old western continuities.

    ---

I tought Metal Sonic Hologram was way too obvious, he's hurting a animal which scare the other ones, I doubt it's the animals hurting him, it doesn't make sense considering their propose, specially after seing the Tidal Tempest one.
I never thought about it being broadcast, that might be it in the end, or simply because Metal Madness is Eggman's realm whatever the time period is (exept Good Future obviously) other zones only seems to me being the bad futures.

And if the question is more the lines of "why Eggman wants to scare the animals" considering that how "light" Eggman seems to be in the games, he probabbly just did for the evilulz, or on more serious note he might just not want them to mess with the his view of the "evolution" and machinary of CD's Zones.
Is this question related to your signature? Seems to be.

There is a problem with that, CD's Badniks (are) powered/trap (by) flowers, not animals. :v:

They also serve a good purpose from a design standpoint: introducing the player to Metal Sonic and how much of an ass he is.
Seriously why would you stomp on little squirrel :(

I've always thought that Metal Sonic was spinning Flicky round his head on a piece of string.

I never thought it was a hologram. It's an incomplete temporal displacer. Metal Sonic is trying to get into the past and wreak havoc, but the technology he is using isn't complete, possibly due to not enough time stones. Destroying the displacer prevents Metal Sonic from entering that time zone

It becomes a moot point later in the game when you destroy metal sonic himself, but anyways.

There isn't much point for having the holograms in what's essentially the villain's operations base...

I'd go with this. Eggman HATES cute lil' animals. Even is he's not turning them into badniks this game, he sure doesn't want them scampering around his glorious metal factories chewing on the wires and stuff.

And they're not in Metallic Madness because even in the past he'd already gotten rid of them.

CD was a bit vague about the 2 machines in the game, You're just told they are there and have to be destroyed (or get the time stones) to achieve good future.

That said I always thought the hologram was more a trick to keep the animal buddies away, or fool them into thinking they had no choice but to become badnik fodder. Certainly it was overall supposed to tarnish Sonic's good name too. Though that didn't really figure into the plot (as I guess the animal friends were too scared of him to take action?)

Also I thought the other machines were generators, assuming they were built to carry out the "Robotization" process automatically and pump badniks out without Robotnik's assistance, which is why they are busted later on from neglect

I think some of you are forgetting that the robots don't house animals...they run off the power of the flowers or something? Hence why they don't drop animals?
