Sega uploads awesome 36-minute documentary on Sonic

At least it's all in one piece now.

 

....and one feature of the Collector's Edition just became virtually worthless.

 

It became worthless as soon as it was announced.

 

No lie, the album and documentary never had worth. Those were going to be ripped and dumped within minutes of release. Still, not bad for the people that didn't get the CE or were too lazy to watch it on YouTube.

Even then, outside of some footage from the Sonic 2 launch in Japan, there's nothing of interest there outside of Sega "borrowing" assets from the wiki.

 

Gametap's one it's better (It was gametap's? I don't remember now.)
They actually show the evolution of the design there, for example. Here not at all.

It cringed me some times, the insistence to call the Console "Genesis" for a documentary that was not released for USA, I mean some of them clearly SAY Mega-Drive, and bam Genesis subtitles.
Well I guess the documentary was always intended to be released for the USA people I guess, I mean it mainly tells about the Sonic's success THERE.

 

dvd footage ALWAYS hits youtube from collectors editions, sucks but at least I can keep my dvd clean now :P

 

I'm in the boat that thinks it's odd to have the American history of the franchise on a PAL region collectors' disc. Though it's clearly cheaply made and seems to be stealing big chunks of its content from either this wiki or YouTube.

What I don't understand is why, in this world where Sega are so desperate to replace "Dr. Robotnik" with "Dr. Eggman", they're happy to keep translating "Mega Drive" into "Genesis". Seems a bit pointless at this stage.

 

Simple, they made a huge mistake revert a well known and loved localization name, now they have to stick with their guns, otherwise other kind of new and some old fans (good or bad) that feels that "Eggman" is the name for the character, because it's the original and/or intended name or because they have a traumas for localizations that change the original works because of some butchered unrelated animes, become even more mad.
This with other batch of huge mistakes in the handling of the franchise only made it worse.

Wasen't Megadrive into Genesis a legal or trademark issue though? They changed that because thay had no choice, something that is probably still outstanding, hence they are still doing it.

Robotnik to Eggman is a totally different situation isnt it? Its just re-adapting the localization within its own characters, I still don't know why people are hell bent on holding onto Robotnik, He's been Eggman for longer now anyway, (I adapted in 1999) "Robotnik" has even had an official verbal send off in Generations lol

That's different, Terra's Final Fantasy is the 6th entry, whatever people like it or not.
And yes I find it annoying, specially because I like FF II for how challaging it is to me, and when I discuss it with some people, sometimes there is a point on our conversation when I get aware that he/she is talking about Cecil's Entry *facepalm*

Well how much I feel that decision to revert to Eggman was stupid (and I like the Eggman moniker), I kinda understand why they gave it a shot, Nintendo did it with Princess Toadstool, the same thing use the two names together and use manily the Japanese one, and it worked. (It's THIS case)
Oh Sega... in some ways you always wanted to do what Nintendoes...

 

Nearly 25 years ago there was a trademark dispute, yes. But they've had 25 years to rectify the situation.

The point is, the various people they talk to in this video learly say "Mega Drive" yet it's subtitled "Genesis" purely for localisation purposes (even though it's "Mega Drive" in Europe). There's no crime in saying "Sega Mega Drive", it's just a pointless extra step that they've taken (and I think it's odd, because they're happy to take this extra step here, but not in cases such as Dr. Robotnik - a name they apparently trademarked in the US).

 

I prefer it when he likens Eggman as hid nickname but everyone acknowledges his birth name of Ivo Robotnik. That's what I liked about SA2.

 

I like how they spent so long on Sonic 1 and 2, and then showed like 3 seconds of footage from S3&K.

American accents are usually shit, but the narrator has an awesome voice!

 

The Genesis was $149.99?! In fucking dollars?!

It was waay more than that in United Kingdom pounds here.

That video is extremely selective, and deliberately misses out a ton of games. Probably they are things that Sega of Japan wants to erase from history.

 

SA1 approach was rather cool too, he would call himself dr. robotnik then sonic would say "yeah, right, eggman!" like it was a cheap insult to his shape lol.

Either way I'm not too fussed about his name any more, at least they mentioned it in generations from classic tails.

don't forget the US people have to pay tax on top of that price, making it more like it's original $189 value.
