August? That's nothing. This one's been around for about 5 months. :v:

People seem to have an obsession with making "fangames" within the first few weeks after we get a teaser trailer for a new game. For views or whatever, I guess.

Well, that's actually an interesting concept. I might try that at some point.

Looks to me like that's how you get to the Genesis Emulator.

Just watched the new footage, and I have to say my anticipation for this game is only on the increase! = ) Modern Sky Sanctuary looks very nice, both in terms of gameplay flow and the look of the thing. In particular, I'm loving how the interiors of the buildings take on a darker and bluer tone that's mildly reminiscent of S&K's Hidden Palace Zone.

Classic Seaside Hill is the real treat here, though - look at all that underwater gameplay! = D The lower route seems very different from the stage it's based on but chock-full of references to water levels from throughout the series. The modern version of the stage gets bonus points for remixing both the Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace themes in terms of both the level design and the music. It's nice to see that SEGA acknowledge that Sonic Heroes basically had a two-act stage structure throughout the entire game, and thus consider the two levels as parts of a single stage. I'm surprised that they've used Spina variants rather than the Egg Flappers from Heroes in this stage, though - however, it does give the enemies some much-needed visual variety.

Death Egg Robot seems short but sweet - though I think once I've unlocked the Hard Mode version I probably wouldn't revisit the normal one. 4 hits is a little short even for a first boss - I would have preferred 6, with 3 hits per phase. Hopefully the Hard Mode will bump it up to around 8. Nice to see that the "Change Music" option applies to bosses too - I'm hoping the 3DS remix of the Big Arm theme and Sonic the Fighters' Death Egg theme are selectable alternatives for this one. = D Having said that, though, the Sonic 2 Final Boss remix is rather epic and sets the tone perfectly.

Overall, looking forward to this more the more I see. = )

  5. More from what I asked Aaron Webber at NYCC:

No Classic Knuckles or Classic Amy, no explanation for it. Every level has a reference to another level, as we've already seen, and surprisingly enough the little brother of the dude from Cash Cash who sang Reach for the Stars BEGGED sega to let him do some remixes for the game because he's a huge Sonic fan, and that's why we have endless mine in city escape. He's apparently a brohog (coining term now since the bronies got a level up on us in terms of unification).

ALSO OF FUCKING INTEREST TO THE STORY:

When you rescue a character that particular character reacts to which Sonic rescues them. Say you rescue Amy as Classic Sonic, she'll be like "wtf", but you rescue her with Modern, she'll be like "omg ily" This gives you a great reason to replay the game.

Don't remember if he told me this on camera or if he told me this before, we had a little bro-moment talkin about Sonic at the Nintendo booth before the camera crew got there, but when my new show launches this week you'll get to see the clip in all it's glory. Also talked to the Archie bros.

    Welp, this.
Majesco manufactured the Genesis 3, so I hiiiighly doubt that.

Also, I was pretty certain that the character list (and who will be classic/modern) hasn't been a secret for quite a while now.

I think a few folks were still holdin' out hope for Classic Amy and Knuckles though, what with the theme of the game and the fact that toys of each are currently on the market.

I didn't notice the little Genesis/Mega Drive before. That probably is how you get to Sonic 1.

I love how everybody loves this Cash Cash guy for coming up with the Endless Mine/City Escape remix even though our own N00neimp0rtant beat em by a year and a half. Note Cash Cash nor anyone at Sega credits him.

Majesco Genesis Model 3 can represent the modern games.

  10. Oh wow I never knew that, and n00neimp0rtant is one of my favorite dudes on the interbutts. The problem is those songs just genuinely go together VERY well and it's very noticeable if you know music, so it wouldn't be too far off to say it's a coincidence, but he might've easily heard n00neimp0rtant's mix before and conciously/subconciously taken it.

Wow.....my partner would kill me if I bought an Xbox 360 just for this game. I still find it a bit funny that Colors is represented in this game, although it came out for the Wii just last year. What a slap in the face that this isn't available on the Wii (I'm sure this is a big reason why it's coming out for PC).

Breezing through the last few pages I conclude that the Time Eater is either the rabbit everyone forgot about or the Ghost of Gerald Robotnik. I've heard that it could be Mephelies from 2006, but I never played it so I'm not too familiar with that thing that pretended to be a hedgehog.

After watching the video, it was nice to see the correct conclusion to the Hydrocity argument. More importantly I wish they weren't talking so I could clearly hear how great the Seaside Hill/Ocean Palace remix is! They did a fantastic job meshing together elements from different games into these levels. They finally proved that with effort, it's possible to blow our minds again. Hidden Palace in Sky Sanctuary?....I didn't expect any less!

On my butt in front of the computer. Where else?
I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
The idea that the Time Eater might share some connection with Solaris or Mephiles makes sense, as Solaris's whole thing was that it was devouring time. Mephiles himself was really little more than a dark ooze/cloud/thing that took on the likeness of Shadow when it merged... with his shadow. The issue with this is that the glimpses we have of the Time Eater so far bear no resemblance to Iblis, Mephiles, or either form of Solaris, and the clockwork thing going on in the background suggests something a little less "serious business" than any of them.

If the Time Eater is a direct result of the colossal, paradoxical mindscrew that is '06's time-travel plot, however, I will laugh. And laugh. And laugh.

I love how you assume that N00neimp0rtant needs to be credited for that ear-rape. Maybe it's because of the speedup to fit into ten minutes, but it doesn't sound very good to me. Sure, I've heard worse mashups, but also much better ones.
Seriously, I think this is a coincidence. Unless the Cash Cash guy says differently, I believe he came up with the idea on his own. History is full of examples of different people inventing nearly the same things at roughly the same time completely independent from each other.

Probably because it's just a total coincidence? The themes aren't even incorporated in nearly the same way.

EDIT: Wow, it seems that everybody jumped on this comment. I guess I should've checked.

The reason the boosters seem so out of place to me is because the chase scene with the wheel instantly reminded me of Hydrocity Act 2 where that wall is chasing you. There were no speed boosters. The one spring I can remember actually shot you back. You had to get through that shit on your own, and that made it that much more intense.

About the little MegaDrive statue above GHZ: Isn't it possible that every zone has a little tribute to the original console it was featured on above the entrance?

It'd be neat if they had little "demos" of the level from the original game, in a way, let people compare the original to the remake in-game.

Yeah, I with they made that sort of case again (they did in Sonic 4 though), I love them because they give you an 'Oh SHIT, OH SHIT' heartbeat.

    Working on my art!
^Possibly. We don't know, all we know is that there is a genesis emulator and that's likely the entrance for it.

Ok there is only one thing about this game that bugs me and it's the exclusion of other classic characters beyond Sonic, Tails, Metal Sonic, and possibly Robotnik. Every level that they've chosen from the genesis era had something to do with classic Amy, Knuckles, and Robotnik. Metal Sonic race, you go and save classic Amy from Robotnik, it's your prize for winning the race. Sky Sanctuary, Knuckles runs across the bridge and presses the button for you, also it's from a game called "Sonic & Knuckles." And with the Death Egg Robot why didn't they have Sonic chasing Robotnik through the corridor? They could have easily thrown him in there. Chaotix however I could care less about, but it'd still be cool to see them in class form. Regardless my point is there are 9 supporting characters, 6 of them had classic incarnations, 3 of which were important, and we only get to see Classic Tails. Hell if they really wanted to go above and beyond they could have made up classic incarnations for Rouge, Cream, and Blaze (funny how the modern girl characters in this game don't have classic versions). That'd have been interesting.

As I've expressed through this thread, I love this game. I love the idea, the execution, pretty much everything. This is the one thing that kind of ticks me off. Not in a huge way, but still. I mean I understand that Modern Sonic has been present for 12/20 years, and as such there is more of him, but it'd have been a nice nod to those of us who have been here since the classic days. Classic Sonic and Tails look awesome. I bet they could have done wonders with Amy and Knuckles. I mean, looking at Modern and Classic Tails side by side, I now realize that Modern Tails really looks quite Derp with his mouth open. Classic Tails does not.

On a positive note though, damn have they done some serious work with Sky Sanctuary. Modern Sky Sanctuary is all over the place. It's almost the perfect modern Sonic level. And Seaside hill looks quite interesting. Good work Sonic Team.
