Thanks for your work on Rexon Sonica, it's coming along very well. I especially love the shiny shades, I think they look brilliant.

I agree with Blanche's feedback, some things that stood out most for me were:

    - The shape of the front of the nose to the top of the head looks curved, it should be straight as per the original sprite.

    - The shiny shade on the front of the nose - it's shape and the way it transitions doesn't match the original sprite.

    - The opening of the mouth is a little too curved, it doesn't match the shape as the original sprite.

    - The shadow at the base of the neck appears to be a little too large.

Great work so far. Please upload what you have done so far, with the source file, to the database when you are ready.

Looking at Metal-Geo's Spiker [IMG] I thought we could consider try adding some Metal gradients on the Boss Drill?

That would make my job a lot easier though I can't manipulate garadients much at all. Paint Shop only allows you a circle, square, and radial styles. I could never get the proper detail from those. I do have PhotoshopCS3 and IllustratorCS3, so if anyone knows if I can dynamically manipulate gradients with these programs similar to what I've done manually with the drill I'll gladly redo in that program.

I agree pretty much with everything he/she said. Just just follow the flow of the original sprite and then retouch.

I am not gradient expert like Metal-Geo, or Elratauru but that's my suggestion:

For those gradients (in illustrator)you can:

-Just make a triangle, fill it with the base color.
    -Duplicate the triangle
-Cut the duplicated triangle with the scissors tool, into two halves. / | | \
-Give each half a linear gradient fill with the proper angle
-Set the blending method of both halves, to "Multiply"
-Add a white semitransparent image as the light source on top

    G'day everyone!

Oh, heh. Please don't associate me with the real experts.

My technique in the Spiker can be... ahum... investigated in the original .ai file. My method mainly exists out of masks and blur filters. But honestly, I wouldn't know if this is the most efficient way.
If you people have the patience (and of course, wouldn't mind), I'd love to give the drill a try myself. Although I wouldn't expect anything to appear before the weekend.

Wish I could do more at the moment. :)

Go ahead. There are three frames so take your pick.

By the way, I'm now a trial member. Ok, I am fixing the bugs for the badnick I drew, and making some of my own improvements. So I will post another sheet out soon. =)

  11. Wait, that game sprite, is the top of his head cut off? Seems like he should have another row of pixels. Seems like it should be more curved.

No, it is like that. I made sure it wasn't cut off, just so you could see the differences.

The nose still doesn't look right. It was smooth in the original, but your sprite has a bit of an extra snout.

Yes, I know but I was told to make it "sharper".

I can see that most of you are not used to pixel art like small sprites or icons because you're mistaking low res limitations with intended features.

    Athelstone is right:

That's an angled low res straight line, not a curved line.

    Nice! :)

    Needs some improvements:

-The outer part of the nose has not much shading.
-Head shape is wrong look more carefully to the original frame, especially the top-right part should be rounder.

I bet Drex will keep an eye on your works! Keep improving! :)

    Hint taken Vince. :P

    1. The snout shouldn't be so square
2.. I attempted to ad some in betweens to this shadow
    3. The shadow was fixed. Since this is a sphere the shadow should follow the same shape as the rest of the light source. (see 5)
    4. The highlight is too small . make it more prominent
    5. I love that you're color picking from the original sprite and staying true to it's color, but there are times to recognize when the colour choice is due to hardware limitation. This was such a case, so I replaced the two dark browns with two darker shades of the Rexon's purple body colour.
    (6) I also think the back of the head should be rounder, but every time I touch it looks worse. =/

Great work so far though  .
