What is your non-Sonic Mega Drive top 10?

Starting this in the hope of finding any undiscovered gems I haven't yet played. In no particular order:

    Skitchin

This is easily in my top 10 games of all time. Skitchin uses the engine of Road Rash (or vice versa, I forget which way it works), and the basis of the game is also similar to Road Rash, but much much funner. The idea is to race to the end of a level, performing tricks, riding the back of vehicles and smashing other skitchers in the face with baseball bats. While the graphics may seem dated, I absolutely adore the music. Which, if I recall correctly, was actually recorded from real instruments and somehow translated onto the Mega Drive for proper 90's tunage effect.

    Mega Bomberman

I hope I don't need to explain the premise of Bomberman to anyone in any great depth, so I'll point out why Mega is so great. I love the joeys, which, to my knowledge is the only other game bar Saturn to feature a ride-on animal with powers (I think the racing games had them, but they don't count :P ). I love the level design, which is so simple and atmospheric; snow levels and lava levels do their jobs so well, with their own area-specific quirks and features. Such a great Bomberman game, and my second favourite after Saturn. It's so cute and funny too.

    James Pond 3

"We are depending on you, Pond!"

This is a total dick of a game, but still brilliant. Quite different to the first two JP games, it's a platformer with what feels like an endless list of levels. You're a secret agent fish trying to foil a secret plot to steal cheese from Mars with your frog sidekick...or something along those lines. What's not to love?! Using an array of items (haunted TV, anyone?), you find teacups to progress though levels, find secret areas, kill mice, and so on.

    Puggsy

Another dick of a game, but superb nonetheless. Puggsy is, I believe, one of the first games to really utilise physics in its gameplay. While on the surface, a simple platformer, Puggsy is in fact laced with often complex puzzles and item combinations. Items can be stacked to reach new areas, or used to bounce and climb environments.

Mega Lo Mania/Tyrants - Fight Though Time

Ok, not exactly a Mega Drive exclusive, but its still a favourite of mine. A simple but effective strategy game where you play a god guiding your peeps though eras of time, right from cave men up to nuclear level.

    Micro Machines 1, 2, and 96

Too difficult to pick a single one, so all of them. Top-view racer, as you probably all know, with different vehicles depending on the tracks. Levels got damn hard as it went on.

    Gunstar Heroes

Side scrolling shooter of AWESOMENESS. Not sure how to describe it any further, you really just need to play it.

    Home Alone

Surprisingly great film-game adaptation. Not very true to the film of course, but who cares. A very different concept to any other game I've played, you basically booby trap houses, take items from said houses and construct guns and other weaponry which you then use to fend off the two robbers. Great fun. Apparently the SNES version is completely different and total arse.

    Desert Strike
AKA: Iraq: The Game. :P It does have some chilling similarities you must admit. Again, not an exclusive title, but whatevs. You're a US (I think?) chopper killin' bad dudes in the middle east, and blowing up a hell of a lot of shit in the process.

    The Lion King

Difficult to pick a final game, I was torn between a lot, but this just won out. Another non-exclusive, and one of the great 90's Disney games, you are of course Simba, platforming your way to becoming king of pride rock, while ragequitting at the stampede level in the process. Some great 16 bit Elton John tunes in there. :P

Honourable mentions to Theme Park, Golden Axes, Streets of Rage...es, Mortal Kombat 1+2, Spiderman v Kingpin, Jurassic Park and Beavis and Butthead.

I'll probably detail this later. In no particular order:

    1.) Gunstar Heroes
    2.) Ristar
    3.) Comix Zone
    4.) Revenge of Shinobi
    5.) Toy Story
    6.) Jurassic Park
    7.) Kid Chamelon
    8.) The Lion King
9.) Mega Man: The Wily Wars
10.) I can't think of a tenth. I guess Virtua Racing was great for the time.

Funny you should make this topic, because I'm considering getting a few more games for my Mega Drive, and I want to know the absolute best- preferably two player, so I can play with my brothers.

My top ten non-Sonic's would have to be:

    10) Kawasaki Superbikes
    9) Toy Story
    8) Ristar
    7) Micro Machines Military
    6) The Lost World: Jurassic Park
    5) Altered Beast
    4) Terminator 2: Arcade
    3) Golden Axe
    2) Streets of Rage
    1) Jurassic Park

    What just missed the list:

Shinobi- Why is this game so fucking hard? I thought it was due to my old controller and lack of save. I then bought it on Wii where I CAN save it, and I still can't get past that level where you climb the building after the highway mission. Too fucking hard.

Kid Chameleon- Too bland, a bit like a bad Mario game. Decent, but weird.

Desert Strike- Too tedious, especially with a d-pad. It would greatly benefit from a joystick.

Anyway, I have a question- is Moonwalker a decent game. Anybody? Looking for a copy.

Tried to finish it a few days ago, I think I got up to the highway level, tried a lot and ragequit. I did cheat by using the infinity shrukien trick though, but it doesnt feel like I'm cheating since you could so easily accidentally do it.

It's a pain in the arse! What is this trick you speak of!? You may have answered my prayers.

Can someone recommend an awesome 2 player co-op game? Even better, a game that works superbly with a joystick!?

Gunstar Heroes is very impressive technically but the gameplay is fucking stupid.

My top 10 in no particular order.

    Aladdin
    Ecco the Dolphin
    Ristar
    Comix Zone
    Gunstar Heroes
    Earthworm Jim
Ecco 2: The Tides of Time
    Chameleon Kid
    Golden Axe
    Mortal Kombat

Honorable mention: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I don't consider it in the Sonic series because Sonic is nowhere to be found and it is basically just a localized version of Puyo Puyo.

Dishonorable mention: Bubsy the Bobcat in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. Fuck you Bubsy. :argh:

  16. In no particular order (and keeping it to one game per series):

    • Wonder Boy in Monster World
I thought this was the best entry in the series. Monster World IV comes very close to it, but I find it a bit too linear (and yes, you can say that all games in that series are linear, but I think MW4 is being way too obvious about it) .
    • Shining Force
I think this is the best TRPG I've ever played. I didn't finish SF2 yet, so I don't exactly know how exactly it compares to the first game.
    • Mortal Kombat 3
The first fighting game I've ever played, and after all these years I think it aged well. Ultimate Mortal Kombat and MK Trilogy are better just by having more fighters, but since I have them on other platforms, it's the original version that gets the spot on this list.
    • Ristar
An amazing platformer, but you all already knew that ;)
    • Super Fantasy Zone
A great shoot them up, and the difficulty is rather engaging.
    • Wiz'n'Liz
A weird game I discovered almost by accident. Very frantic and stress-inducing (in a good way :) )
    • Darius II/Sagaia
One of my favorite shoot them ups. Being VERY non-linear helps (there are 26 levels, and you only play 7 in one playthough) . I have three different versions of this game (Master System, Mega Drive and Saturn) and they actually play differently and offer different challenges. To simplify it, I could say that the MS version is the easy mode (the kind that, on the other hand, has less content, featuring only 12 levels) , and the Saturn version, which is the direct port of the Arcade game, is the hard mode.
    • Golden Axe
Another game that needs no introduction :)
    • Ghostbusters
      Just a good solid platformer.
    • Earthworm Jim
The second entry IMHO has a few levels that are plain tedious (Puppy Love and Flyin' King particularly come to mind)

    No order or anything:

    - Gunstar Heroes
    - Streets of Rage
    - Ristar
    - Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (track creator, hell yeah!)
    - Super Hang-On
    - The Lion King
    - Hellfire
    - Mick & Mack: Global Gladiators (McDonald's-sponsored but fuck this game was amazing and hard)
    - World of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (This game is amazing, especially so in co-op, give it a blast)
    - Jungle Strike (When you get the stealth bomber late-game, fuck yes)

    1. Ristar
    2. Duke Nukem Forever 3D
    3.Shaq-Fu (for the lulz :P)
    4. Shadow Dancer
    5. Shinobi III
    6. Comix Zone
    7, 8 & 9: Toejam & earl series.
    10. Ecco.

    Also:

It's pretty good, and it supports multiplayer. However some of the level design and enemy placement is.... questionable.
