That's it, concept art than Adobe Illustrator CS2 for vector paint.

Whoa, that's pretty awesome! What I'd suggest is filling the color gaps better with some sort of gradient, and getting rid of that smile—Super Sonic looks badass, not cheery with a pedosmile.

Edited Vincent's sprite to remove the cheery smile.

  4. Now if only there was a way to add a glowing effect to him ingame, because I doubt that the glowing pallete will effect him.

Jeez, what's with that big gap between Supersonic's eyes and his muzzle? Edited again so you see what I mean:

...But anyway, I'm not liking this one as much as Yarharhar's example.

His spines look kinda irregular and too round where they shouldn't be, not "spiky" enough (in Sonic 2 at least, SuperSonic's look was kind of "electric", not "curly"). Also, the gloves seem to be too big.

EDIT: Yet another modification, to show a more spiky look, as well as some sligthly more faithful shadows for his head and body, and other small changes:

The main thing I'd suggest is that you should look at the original each time you make changes. That last pic looks even less like the original sprite. Now not even the small shine in his head looks round anymore.

As for the other stuff I'd change, in case you haven't already noticed from the pic I posted:
-Sonic never has a separation between his eyes and muzzle (I thought this one should be quite obvious to anybody who has ever seen Sonic...).
    -Mouth looks a bit inexpressive.
-His belly has a strange shape.
-The buckle on his left shoe shouldn't be visible from that angle.
-His gloves don't look cartoony enough, and the wrists look too big.
-His spikes should be more pointy and less curved.
-The shadows and lights don't look like in the original, he doesn't quite look like he's emanating light.
    -His forehead looks too round.
-His leg looks a bit too thin, and wierdly shaped.
-I also think the arm and leg may look a little too long.

Side by side comparison, to illustrate all this:

So, I see why you put the space between his eyes and his muzzle. If you look at the sprite, it looks like there is a space there, but what you think is space is actually just the highlighted area of his muzzle. They just used white to highlight the space because of palette limitations (and supersonic being brightly colored then masks this further).

About spikes I don't' like it to be too square, that's more SuperSonic in Sonic 3 to me.
About eyes, do you like this change or should stay pitch black? :D

Since I had nothing to offer to this community but a huge load of unusable concept art I've been storing since '95, I just waited for years before registering S2beta.
I'm just crap in hacking, never had that skill, but Damian Grove let me dream with ProSonic and finally Yarharhar's use of concept art made my mind up.

In the few days off duty I dedicate myself in making HDs of my artworks.
I just expect the same from the other members in the programming and hacking area.
Maybe soon I'll put those new level into reality, but for now having Sonic, Tails and Knuckles complete frame set is top priority. Once finished we'll have easy time on all Sonic games and Hacks.

Speaking of frames tomorrow is HDtime.
Would you like the second frame of SuperSonic running animation, Tails or Knuckles?

P.s. I'll put minor updated SSonic frames in my personal photo area, due trial limit I cannot edit my posts.

Before you make any more sprites, and to make things easier, I suggest splitting those parts of the sprites that can be reused for other frames. For example, Sonic's head might look exactly the same in a few frames of the walking animation, Tails' head, arms and body look the same while running except for his hair and ears, etc.

Also, I still have a few gripes with your last super Sonic, even though it's a nice improvement:
-The shape and shadows/glowing of his last spine don't look like the original.
-His leg and belly still look wierd.
-Many of the glowing lines in his head are different from the original. And his body's lacking a few brights, I really suggest to have the original sprite as reference for this kind of stuff, or else the new sprite might feel quite different overall.
-That round shadow in the back of his head shouldn't be there, that's only shown when non-super. In fact, since the Super form is glowing, it's not supposed to show much shadows, if any.
-His forehead still looks too round. Sonic's supposed to have a bump where his eyebrows would be.
-His thumb and finger still look a bit thin/strange.
-I personally think his mouth still doesn't look badass enough, not sure why... =|

Again, to illustrate what I mean:

I really recommend trying to follow the originals, or else this could become more like a "custom sprite sheet" rather than an HD version of the real stuff (This is directed to anybody who wants to contribute, since it could lead to a too wide diversity of styles for the same game).

I dunno. Except for the fact that there is that odd shadow on Sonic's head and the bump for his eyebrows I prefer the one in the middle in that picture.

Well... Giving more details would help; I wouldn't like being the only one giving detailed criticism. =|

EDIT: By the way, I'm doing those alterations with a mouse that doesn't always respond as good as I'd like. They're just intended to give some advice on how I think that certain stuff (shapes, shadows) could look better, making it look more like the original sprite, basically.

Well, the big thing that sticks out for me is that the shading of the middle spine, while technically closer to the original, doesn't look right, as it appears unnatural; the middle is close to the original as well but it feels to me to be a bit more natural.

The brightness around his arm, however, would be a good addition to the middle one. Otherwise the body seems too "flat".

I also don't really see much wrong with the hand from the picture in the middle as well. The fingers of the rightmost seem to be a little too thick to me.

Keep in mind that those details I put are just a modest HD re-imagining from the original sprite, just to give ideas on how to make it more faithful. I'm sure that Vincent, Yarharhar or somebody else over here can come up with much better results while trying to stay on-model, since they have the needed tools and know how to do their stuff (I can barely draw straight lines over here).
Yeah... I made those using the laptop's touchpad, so they look a bit fatter than I wanted. There might be a middle point between both pics, that makes the hand look better.

Hand drawing each frame one at a time would be very difficult and time consuming. Wouldn't it be much easier to make a 3D model based on the S2 sprites, and use it to make each frame? I mean, isn't this what they did when making character and badnik art in S3?

That way, each frame would match...I mean hand drawing each frame and getting them to look good when animated just seems like it would be very hard to pull off.

Any suggestions before I finish it?

Also should I draw Sonic's right hand/fist as it is now, pointing upwards, or turn it so it points to his body? If you know what I mean...

    That's it.
I just started working on another frame, hope posting something this evening.

Pointing on the body is way better BUT pay attention on:

1)Left leg's angle is wrong. Should be completely vertical.
2)left part of Muzzle is too low, move it up.

I don't see any deadline, so if I draw 2 frames per week I can have 8 a month and 96 per year.
Of course if someone helps me drawing other frames based on the same artwork's style or just assembling parts, it would be much faster.
Hand drawing is the best way for obtaining Sonic Feel and 3D is bound by a model and very limited in showing different animations,
(Like running's red circle or falling from edge for an instance),eventually leading to complete flatness.
Frames they will not match IF the they are done without tiles recycle.
But I doubt anyone here doing vector paint would prefer to redraw unnecessary art instead of copy - paste and assemble different artworks.
