Basically start with this and then this.

I'm interested in knowing if anyone here either knows anything or even can get access to Korean MD games or even games for any Sega console released in Korea (and I know I'm disregarding country names just forget it for now). One site I found had pictures of their MD and a blurb along the lines of "they don't sell to foreigners," while another had more detail on distributor Samsung's gaming history, but I'd like to know more from someone with more direct knowledge or collectors (also to officially resolve the Langrisser issue in that first link I posted).

    Anyone can help?

I think you might struggle to find Korean games, but you might have more luck trying to track down "Asian" Mega Drive games (as in those which plaster "ASIAN VERSION" on the boxes - not Japanese or Korean versions). Maybe even Russian ones (assuming this is an official product and there are more like it)

As far as the internet goes, the majority of it seems to only recognise Europe, North America and Japan. Brazil's got some footing because of its original content but the rest is completely unexplored, which is a huge shame. Even a lot of Japanese stuff is a big mystery to the western world. Just hit and miss with auction sites I guess.

Did you try Top Shooter? It's Korean I believe. One of those arcade games made out of Mega Drive hardware. I'm still unable to get the coin chute working but I found out a SMPS version of The Final Countdown o_O

Top Shooter is Chinese actually, not Korean.

Every once in a while I see a Korean Sonic the Hedgehog 3 pop up on eBay; I'm sure there's plenty of other games that find their way onto eBay. Be warned that you'll have to pay a hefty price, they're never cheap. I found this with a quick search, no idea if it's legitimate or not.

I've never been able to convince myself to buy a copy of a Korean MD game, but I do own Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Asian version."

The games are in storage (as is my scanner) as I'm moving house. I'd be more than happy to do it for the wiki when I get myself sorted and set up, these pics were taken a while ago. I've had these since 2008 when I lived there, never really thought that nobody on here wouldn't have seen them before.

Sonic 2 Korean version practically doesn't exist, I searched the country high and low and every shop keeper said I'd have a better chance of striking oil, it was released during a licensing hitch between Sega and Samsung and so suffered from delivery shortages, it does exist but in a year of living there I never came across it, I even had some friends there search the korean equivalent of eBay for it with no success. For those of you that don't know, Samsung acquired the license to distribute Sega hardware and software as the koreans hate the japanese and wouldn't touch something with a Sega logo on it. Same goes for Nintendo which was distributed by Hyundai.

The games themselves are the US versions on Japanese chipsets as were all games in the 90's as a Korean would rather have english text over Japanese, not that it matters much in Sonic MD games. I also have a Samsung Megadrive II which is basically the Asian version in a MkII case with different lettering, colours and logos.

There was also a Samsung Saturn. I did manage to find a Samsung Saturn controller and some korean games (Virtua On and Sega Rally - which came in a box about 10 inches wide and 15 inches tall...not kidding). However the System appeared to fail almost instantly and the country relied on US imports after that. Same goes for Sega CD, there is no official release of the attachment however many of the stores carry US games.

As for the Korean Master System. It does exist but it has a completely different name. I never saw one (and I'd be a wealthy man if I did, they're highly sought after) and I never saw any games either other than pirate carts. I have a feeling that the Master System was never licensed and so the console that exists in Korea is a custom clone made only to play the masses of multicarts produced (of which I found thousands for moth MS and MD, they were around £0.50 each and I bought a handful but they've all been passed onto collectors.)

I only in lived in the country for a year and I researched Korean gaming intensely and at one point owned a Korean SNES, Neo Geo, NES, Gameboy (or Comboy as they're both known). Alas most of my stuff was sold for profit when I returned as I'm not much of a hoarder, only Sonic stuff is ever held onto.

    Any questions please ask.

Can you list any non-Sonic Sega/Samsung stuff that is in your collection that you can remember at least? And would you know if it was called Langrisser in Korea too (settling the name dispute)? Thanks.

I have Kid Chameleon, Fifa Soccer, Mean Bean Machine (which is actually Puyo Puyo with a MBM cover, manual and cart sticker...weird huh? I know it's the same game in essence but weird how the koreans just kept the original and just physically rebadged it) I've also got 2 copies of Korean Virtua Racing complete with large cart and 3D internals etc.

EDIT: I don't know anything about the Langrisser issue.

Anyway I came across hundreds of Korean MD games when I was there, I just bought a handful, If could have gotten them home easily and cheaply I would have bought everything.

I can read korean and almost all of the games were just using the english names translated phonetically.

I'll put up some more pictures sometime but it's late and I need sleep. Also if anyone wants to buy a Korean copy of Virtua racing they're more than welcome however there is no manual with it.

...huh. According to no-intro, there was a Korean MBM called "Dong Gu Ri Te Chi Jak Jeon" ? It's interesting you got the regular Puyo Puyo...

It's the first in a series of strategy games by NCS, In America it was released under the name "Warsong," but no sequel has ever been released under that name (or overseas at all), but Korea did get some of the sequels... so this is just a question to settle a naming dispute.

I had two copies of MBM and both were Puyo Puyo, I bought duplicates of all the Sonic games as I knew they'd be desirable back home. I'm not doubting your knowledge but do you have proof that the game content was actually MBM?

The label might say the name you suggested but the game inside might have always been Puyo Puyo. I'll try and find the picture and see what it says.

That second PC collection is very nice looking for a pirate collection.

You're hearing the vowels poorly, and possibly have Google Translate set up oddly. I set it to Korean->Korean translation and got "rang-geu-ris-sa" clear as day. The vowel "eu" in Korean is the same vowel as "u" in Japanese, so it's often used where the phonology won't allow a consonant cluster. "Rang-geu-ris-sa" is just Langrisser transliterated into hangul.

Yeah you know what? There was no point in keeping the argument open, Japan+Korea+entire franchise > US; this isn't like Aleste/Power Strike. Page moved.

I suppose me being able to read and speak Korean has nothing to do with anything then.

What I wrote was a direct phonetic translation of the text on the box.

No, that transliteration was just more proof, which helped.

Good luck with that move and I hope you'll be able to provide scans when everything arrives :)

? is "eu", ? is "s". Anyone can look up the Revised Romanisation (which I only violated in hyphenating the different hangul blocks while using a transliteration based on it being a single word) and learn that.

And if we're going to talk about phonetics, then you must have meant [?ä?g??is?ä], using the International Phonetic Alphabet.

? is always said as a Shhh sound.

eu is indeed an uh sound, I stand corrected. Korean is a really complicated language and sounds and pronunciations change all the time. I used to use audio translators with my students when I was there and they seldom recognised what was said. To get the accent and pronunciation correct takes time and experience.

Either way we've proven the differences of the games.

  20. I've done some minor alterations to the Langrisser article accordingly.

Also, one other note; I do believe I remember seeing pictures of Korean versions of Japanese Sega Pico games. This might be worth looking into, yes?
