I keep finding videos on YouTube referencing this thing called Sonic Adventure Online but none of them really seem to show what exactly it is or where it can be downloaded. Does anyone have any idea what it is? Is it some kind of fangame, some obscure cancelled Sega project, or entirely a hoax?
I can only assume it's a fan game, since I know of no official "Sonic Adventure Online" ever made by Sega.
It was a fangame made by a youtuber called sonicxtr3me. It was actually a mod of Halo custom Edition with several multiplayer maps released. It has had many many many itirations, Genesis of the Azure wind and Sonic Custom Edition being the most known names. It's cancelled now, but the maps still appear here and there. Moddb page
God, I totally forgot about that project. They were floating everywhere online back in '06 and '07 on YouTube and Google Video. Looked really shitty.
Ah, nothing like running from teleporter to teleporter. Entire consecutive three-second segments of gameplay! I don't know how anybody could've thought the level design in this mod was acceptable.
The level on mod db was god awful yeah. But the original level made, Sonic Gulch was pretty cool, some work was put into it, making the new vehicles and characters. But then the guy decided to make a story-based game connected to 2006, which automatically went to shit.
I think if the levels weren't heavily teleporter-based, this would have been a relatively OK mod. I was going to help with animation, but by time I got there, it was essentially dead =S Oddly enough, this mod got me playing Halo in the first place. >host server >get killed >cheat_all_vehicles >"<name> was crushed by a vehicle."
Sonic Gulch was great, one of my favorites on Custom Edition. But I'll agree with Impish here that anything else that the guy came up with was even less acceptable than Sonic 06. The whole mod looked like it served no purpose, there was a Sonic model and a level to run around in but no real purpose behind it all. I kind of blame it on him wanting to make an actual Sonic game on Halo: Custom Edition instead of Unreal.
Yeah, I never really "got" this mod. Halo never seemed like a good platform to make mods for. Everything is self-contained in a map file, so a "mod" is actually just a series of maps and each map can be anywhere from 50-200mb each (sometimes more!), and you end up with a lot of unnecessarily repeated assets, because every map has to have every model, texture, animation and sound in it. I remember that silly "Halo 2 C.E." project, the four or five maps they released for that ended up totalling half a gig. I admired their dedication and skill, but it always seemed a bit misplaced. Their later obsession with Sonic 2006 always seemed really strange, too.
Halo 2 C.E. was actually a pretty good project though, because they did succeed in successfully bringing over Halo 2 maps with the Halo 2 character models and weapons, unlike Sonic Adventure Online which was too ambitious to ever lead anywhere.
Except for the part where you'd have multiple versions of Halo 2 C.E. Maps. So you'd have "Zanzibar Classic v2.0" but then "Warlock v1.0", so all the balance changes and visual enhancements for Zanzibar wouldn't carry to Warlock. The SMG looks and sounds perfect in Zanzibar but then you change to Warlock and oops everything about it is wrong now even though all you did was change map.
