Project:Maybe something with S1, depends if I feel like doing it.
Made a slight edit to the previous attempt of an edit. The eyebrows were modified because they still looked pissed.

I always liked it for its purpose in Sonic CD, where Sonic was supposed to look angry at the player. You left him hangin' after all.
Anywhere else though, especially for a falling animation, just looks kinda weird.

This looks much more natural for a fall. I can't wait to see it in motion.

Flapping spikes look good but the flapping arms look wack. Coming from someone who's jumped out of an air plane your arms are fucking rock hard to move free falling.

Actually, I did that on purpose to match up with the rest of the Sonic 1 sprites. He's pretty much constantly pissed looking in 1 and 2 (I guess Robotnik ate his chili dog or something...).

Yeah but Sonic's got noodle arms and a lot stuff he does isn't realistic.

Project:Sonic Continued
Well, I think it was probably used originally due to its similarity to how Knuckles falls after gliding; not that I think it looks right either.

Because the topic got bumped, I can also post a picture:

It's from Sonic Chaos Revolution, which is one if the first fan games which used that Sonic CD sprite (although modified to fit in the game's style). And it looks quite decent.

Woah, and it's widescreen? I need to get this.
edit: Looking at YT vids, physics don't look all that hot.

It's got nice spritework though!

Holy crap, I remember playing this fangame back in 2004 or 2005, man it was pretty damn hard. I'm not too sure if I ever beat Hydrocity Zone. I remember being pretty amazed at the spritework at the time though :P

Well you have to give credit where credit is due. For it's time it was a fantastic fan game. I remember it fondly, and I almost would like to see it redone one of these days, perhaps as a simple level hack of Sonic 3, since that's kind of all it is.

I WAS gonna use it in mine... but considering the overwhelming negative feedback, and the general reactions to this topic... I'm taking it out... some people like it, myself included... but many more people don't, and those that do like it won't give that much of a shit about its absence.

Well, just use mine or one of the subsequent enhancements to the sprite if you're concerned about the public opinion. That way you can both include it and not worry about the consensus.

I think most people use that particular sprite not only because Sonic looks cool in it, but also because it's a sprite of him falling. All of the classic games had him walking/standing in mid-air if he wasn't rolling. This looks kind of strange, and feels almost out-of-character for Sonic, who has been displayed and represented as a character who is very in-control of his body. Just look at how he leaps around in the Sonic CD intro! It only makes sense that Sonic would fall in this graceful/cool manner, rather than flailing his feet around.
And, I'd like to note that everyone only mentions this frame's use in Sonic CD for the "I'm outta here" bit, but he also uses it when walking off of the edge, and falling down from the top of the second 3D-ish ramp in Palmtree Panic Act 1.
