If possible, you'll probably want to patch your game with the hack in this thread instead:
    http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=50595
Unless you don't mind the results from your current set-up. The previous widescreen hacks all had different problems with them. The original had some pop-in and crashed 2 of the games cutscenes, the second version which fixed most pop-in had issues with the camera being zoomed wrong in battles and when buying things. Haven't played with the latest yet, but it supposedly fixes all pop-in.

In Shenmue 3 news... There was no update for January, but there wasn't last year either. Also, even though they showed the game during a presentation at MAGIC last year, they haven't announced any plans to show it this year and Yu Suzuki will not be attending. The guy who runs that conference is also president of the company co-producing the game, and he was the one who said on Twitter last fall that they were targeting December for a trailer. He hasn't provided any news on that front lately, probably due to the number of people disappointed when we didn't get a trailer in December. I personally think they're going to have to finish that soon, or it's going to appear like they're behind schedule.

The company running the kickstarter confirmed to a backer that they plan to offer add-ons (such as buying both platforms) when it gets closer to survey time later this year. This was something I had actually been hoping for, because I want to buy both the PS4 and PC releases. I didn't want to double-back (pledge separately on PayPal in addition to my existing Kickstarter backing) to avoid duplicate rewards.

Ahh, I skipped over the topic because I can't read. This doesn't account for Shenmue II though. Thanks for the tip.

EDIT: There's this thing called reading the thread, too. There's a fix for II in there.

Just bumping this again in preparation for next week. Since the last time someone posted here:
    1. The game was delayed until the 2nd half of 2018.
    2. Deep Silver will be publishing the game. My first impression was "Oh no, they published Mighty No. 9", but at the point that was announced we already knew the game sucked and it had nothing to do with Deep Silver publishing it. Actually, Deep Silver already publishes Sega titles in Europe, including the Yakuza series. So this seems like a reasonable fit.
    3. A new video of the game will drop next week during Gamescom, which is likely the trailer that they were originally planning for last December.
    4. Yu Suzuki is doing a backer meet and greet at Gamescom next week. It's being held at Sega's booth. This doesn't necessarily mean anything.

The graphics have improved since the last time the game was shown off, and the character models have been updated:
That's the Chobu area from the game in the background, previously they had mostly shown Bailu Village. Ryo looks significantly better than the original Kickstarter model in my opinion. Still not a perfect match for the original, but I think if the overall art style of the other NPC's looks similar then it might be fine.

The content of the backer updates we got earlier this year was what I was expecting to see last fall. Based on where they are now, I'm guessing they ended up about 9 months behind their original plan and release is probably going to be around September of 2018. The money they're getting via the Deep Silver deal is probably covering the delay. I'm looking forward to next week's update, it will be nice to finally have a better idea of what the finished product will look like.

Thanks for the detailed run-down sonicblur! It's always nice to see this thread bumped with news.

The last real look we had at the game was during Magic Monaco in February 2016, and the game looked vivid, stunning and beautiful. So I'm excited to finally see the game in motion and hopefully look significantly improved and further along. I've actually been hyped for Gamescom all month.

Shenmue 3 along with Sonic Mania are my two most anticipated games. This is Sonic/Shenmue month for me.

When the Kickstarter was announced, I called it the game wont be released until 2020. I still hold my claim. Wait and see.\

P.S. sorry for being a dick and bursting everyone's bubble

I fully agree, although refrained from posting because it's just too easy to be negative :v:

But yeah, I fully expect another delay. Out of all Kickstarter campaigns in the past that have done exactly what this one is doing (delays, extended periods of silence, not much showing of any work being done, going behind people's backs and searching for funding from some other studio which totally goes against the original spirit of the campaign to begin with, etc.), there's absolutely no reason to think this game will fair any better. And I'd find it difficult to believe that the game's scale is small enough that they would have it done already within a year's time since the game has so far only been in development for what, 2 years? Yet every behind the scenes video they've made public so far still just shows them working on the Shenhua area that we saw in disc 4 on Shenmue 2. That doesn't give me much confidence that they're too far along. If it actually did come out next year it would certainly be of inferior quality. Sega making the originals take forever in development was for good reason. The new technology of today doesn't mean they can produce quality any faster, after all.

Let's see if the upcoming trailer gives any reason to not expect this to be just another Kickstarter game.

Man, they could take until 2030 for all I care... I just want this game to end up being the masterpiece it deserves to be. When Shenmue 3 was announced I legit couldn't believe it- I thought for sure the next announcement would be half-life 3 after that. The whole situation with the kickstarter vs Sony assisting them was kind of weird, but frankly, I just don't care... I just want to see this game made and this story completed.

I think it was obvious as of last December that they weren't going to make the 2017 release. Every game that I've backed on Kickstarter has been delayed and a lot of people on the Shenmue Dojo forums were also saying they would be fine with a delay over a year ago. I was personally expecting to start seeing character model WIP last fall, and they didn't start showing those until a few months ago. I don't want to be the person who keeps trying to put a positive spin on things, but at this point I think the 2nd half 2018 timeframe a vague enough to be realistic. What I presume they'll be showing next week is only about 9 months late, so if they remain on track I think September 2018 is a realistic release window. For them to meet that though, they will need to begin doing motion capture for cutscenes by the end of this year and start recording voiceovers by February. If we don't hear anything about voiceover recording by the March Kickstarter update, I won't think 2018 is feasible.

The Phantom Riverstone blog has an analysis of the material that was released last week:
    http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/08/close-up-on-new-shenmue-iii-art.html

Pretty sure nobody was expecting the great wall of China to be in the game. (I wasn't) I will reserve further judgement on how things are going until after the video is released in a few days. I don't believe they provided a timeframe for when that will drop, but Tuesday or Wednesday is very likely.

They announced FROM THE VERY GET GO that they were securing additional funding outside of Kickstarter.

    First Shenmue 3 trailer:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UweI4Ra2QbM

Character models and animation look a bit stiff, but graphically I think the environments look great.

I concede I got the funding thing wrong then, should have looked more into it. But as I said, all developer videos thus far had not shown anything past the areas where you follow Shenhua. Or just character models in a generic backdrop. That's a still pic you showed.

The new areas look nice in the video. I'm only somewhat annoyed by all the blooming that's going on in lighted areas since I'm used to the DC not having to resort to that, but I guess it's a sign of the times. Really wish they'd wise up and make the character models much more like their DC ones. Why change it so radically? Ryo's head looks too round, Shenhua is just... off.

But that's just me being weird probably :)/>

Environments look great, but the character models look awful. So awful. Everyone looks like they're made of plastic, and everyone's faces look like masks. Or action figure heads.

There was a gallery of stills posted on the PlayStation blog today:
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/sets/72157685371847410
On the two stills next to one another where you can see Ryo's face in-game, it's very clear that his expression is frozen in place. And actually, I think the stills look better than the trailer just because you can't see the character animation. The characters almost look fine in those stills. Some people have suggested that the trailer is probably older than the stills because the cave looks better in the still than it does in the video, but maybe the video was captured on PS4 hardware and the stills are from PC. Who knows.

I'm expecting there will be more news over the next week as people get a chance to interview Suzuki-san about this. After seeing the new media, I think my only concern right now is the lack of NPC's. They clearly didn't start working on them until this year, and since they didn't populate Choubu with them in the trailer they probably have a lot of them left to go. We've only seen 5 of them: Ryo, Shenhua, Old Man on Boat, Old Man who is falling backwards, and steroid Man. Old man who is falling backwards actually reminds me a lot of the NPC art style in the original games.

I know they were cherry-picked, but I'm happy with the quality of the still images in that album. I hope that by the next teaser they start doing motion capture and the characters look less awkward in motion.

The animation looks very stiff. I'm hoping the final result has more polish, and actually, I'm hoping for another delay. I think 2018 is too soon.

As was mostly expected, the characters are confirmed to still be work in progress.

That kinda seems like the facial animation is still being worked on, not so much the models themselves.

I'll wait for a better translation though.

    Actual translation:
    http://kotaku.com/yu-suzuki-explains-shenmue-iiis-stiff-facial-expression-1798337053

This is a link to a translation of a different interview, but it covers the same topic:
    http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/08/translation-interview-with-yu-suzuki.html

Based on the text of that longer interview, he says that Ryo and Shenhua are still provisional. It sounds like only one of the characters in the video is nearing completion, although it's not clear which one. The interview text has them pointing to more characters as provisional than are in the trailer released Monday. It's also known that the media got to see a different trailer at Gamescom with about a minute of additional footage compared to the released one, so it's not clear if the nearly finished character was even in the public video. Either way, there are multiple sources now that the character stuff is WIP, so hopefully the next time they provide a teaser it's better.

I kinda love how blocky and bad the character models are. It's charming to me for some Dreamcast nostalgia. I wish the whole game just looked like it was supposed to be on Dreamcast.
