Sonic Chess Collection
So a new Sonic Chess set is being released over here, only it's part of a magazine set and you get one piece with every issue. It'll retail for £7 per fortnight (the first two weeks are cheaper) and will go for 64 weeks, so that's £216 spread out over two and a half years. The magazine includes details about the piece you get, a character profile, chess academy (a tutorial basically) and cuts from the Archie comics.

They're not the nicest pieces ever, but they certainly make an interesting set with all the obscure and unusual chao that make up the hero pawns. And the badniks making up the dark pawns is really nice too.

And this is presumably the proposed set, pumpkin chao and Jaws included:
Dark Side
King- Eggman
Queen- Rouge
Bishops- Egg Pawn x2
Knights- Shadow x2
Rooks- Metal Sonic x2
Pawns- Chopper, Jaws, Buzzer, Crawl, Newtron, Shellcracker, Motobug, Burrobot

Hero Side
King- Super Sonic
Queen- Amy
Bishops- Tails x2
Knights- Sonic x2
Rooks- Knuckles x2
Pawns- Chaos, Egg Chao, Swim Chao, Power Chao, Fly Chao, Fly/Power Chao, Pumpkin Chao, Omochao

(new Super Sonic render on there, too)

Someone who's got the first issue over at the Bumbleking forums took a couple of pics: 1, 2

Admittedly I'd rather have some of these characters over the other's chess pieces, but seems very very expensive. I realize you're getting a magazine along with it and all but geez.

Wondering whether to bother with this; I already buy a few children's comics every week, what's a magazine featuring Sonic and Chess; two hitherto unrelated things I love?

Still, what absolute fuckup in marketing thought of this? I can't see the audiences of either thing being interested in the other, freaks like myself aside.

Oh my god want. I'm going to have to sort direct debit, so I can get those subscription gifts. D:

I'll probably buy a few of the pieces, even though typically these things never go beyond Issue 3!

I might just have to get the Super Sonic one. Maybe the Metal Sonic too

Sonic is a little on the ugly side, but Eggman looks decent and I'm curious to see what the badniks and Chao look like. Being not much of a chess enthusiast or figure collector I don't have much interest in them, but I've never really seen their choices for pawns in figurine form.

The only thing I dislike about the set is reusing characters. Two Sonics, and two Rouges etc. It's a bit lazy.

Yeah, thought on it a bit and decided against. In seriousness I may as well buy a chess set, a book on chess strategy and just play some damn Sonic.

Hm. Reminds me of that old Star Trek chess set I saw ages ago, with Federation vs. Borg themes.

So far, that's the only instance anywhere of that Super Sonic Render up there, right?

these things are always expensive but then you buy them once or twice a month. eggman there looks a little low quality but I'm willing to give it a shot. This is the sort of stuff which you can't find a few years from now.

I really can't imagine this will go on for two and a half years. Would be very surprised if it managed six months. =X

It's too expensive for me; and the statues (besides Robotnik, because Robotnik is king) don't look too fantastic. It's good to see more Sonic magazines / merch popping up in the UK though, but yeah, £6.99? I'll pass.

Besides, I'd rather have this chess set instead any day (another thing I can't afford woe is me);

I don't think it will sell for THAT long, tough I'm really interested in the Badniks (also Amy & Tails). Still I would had been more practical to sell those figurs like the gashapon sets from other series.

It's bothering me that they didn't include a speed Chao.

I've recently got into playing chess again, and I must say this looks quite awesome. Too bad it's not available in the US.
