  1. My current plan is similar. I've been considering a used PS4 for some time now, for a few upcoming games I'd like the chance to play. Mania is priority #1 and I've long decided to buy three copies between the PC, PS4, and possibly switch if I do decide to get one.

I broke the news to the lady this morning though and it doesn't look like she's in favor of me buying a new system right now. She's right though because we just moved into a new apartment and have plans to buy other things at the moment. I guess whether or not a get a system next week depends on how cheaply I can come across one but I'm leaning towards not atm. But if I wait until the 29th I'm going to get very busy at work again and won't have much time.

    Ugh...

The fact that the special announcement was announced so soon after the game started getting leaked, when there was supposed to be no more news for Mania and the opening animation released right around the same time when it was supposed to come out the day before the game's release, indicates to me that this isn't strictly Steam being screwy. It was showing the date correctly and they've already updated the site accordingly.

As much as I don't want to antagonize the team behind it at all, I flatout don't buy that this was optimization issues. Infact I wouldn't be surprised at all if SEGA suddenly flipped their lid in part due to the leak on Switch, and forced a delay on the PC version to prevent day one piracy and/or slip DRM into the game, regardless of how Taxman and Stealth were advancing on.

  4. I get the feeling there'll be almost twenty thousand of those going unwanted...

Meh, I don't care much about waiting for an additional half a month since I hadn't made any special plans. Would be nice from SEGA to offer something better as an apology than the emulated Steam version of Sonic 1, though (at the very least, it would cost them zero effort and money to add every emulated Sonic game to the Sonic Mania preorders).

If it's because of a bug, maybe there's a lesson to learn here about hiring more betatesters (*raises hand and whistles innocently*) or releasing some public demos in advance that we can tear apart like we always do with the final versions.

Just don't cancel your preorders, guys. Don't let Sonic Forces win the battle.:(

Yeah, I think piracy issues could actually be something to do with it. If they did delay it to prevent piracy though, my God, SEGA are massive assholes.

Keep in mind though that Taxman's tweet on DRM isn't inherently linked to this.

Man though, what a colossal fuck up.

And to ICEKnight. I for one am still getting it on PC, as I'm sure everyone will eventually. But it's understandable for people to be unbelievably pissed off, I would be if I didn't have PS4/Xbox One.

The game will still be amazing, but there's no way getting over how fucking atrocious and unacceptable this is.

Hmmm FWIW regarding the "optimization issues" thing, I do wanna point out that I tried running Retro Sonic and Sonic Nexus on my laptop a few months ago, but neither worked properly. The sound was there, but there was no video. Now, obviously Mania's using a later version of the Retro Engine, and I don't even mean to suggest that people are having this specific issue (because I literally wouldn't know) - just bringing this up to point out the possible validity of the optimization claim. And personally speaking, I'd just like to believe that they wouldn't veil the true problem as something that it's not. Could be game-breaking glitches and DRM though, for all we know :v:

The DRM comment is seriously worrying me, as well as some things I've been hearing elsewhere. If this thing ships with Denuvo, I will be enraged. Anything more than standard Steam DRM and I will boycott anything SEGA does until it is removed and encourage others to do the same.

At this point I feel like it would be best for one of the devs to just step forward and give us a bit more explanation as to how this all happened. But I don't feel that will happen, otherwise they would have given us the downlow upfront.

While I do still feel as though some people are overreacting, the anger is justified and I'm sorry if I came off as condesending. I think I can honestly say I would be just as pissed in this situation, so I think it's time for me to stop playing hypocrite. :V

Just don't go too deep or Forces wins

    Many a game.
I'm kinda speechless and very upset, considering I've been anxiously waiting for a year and PC was my ONLY option, but there's really nothing i do

The DRM comment has nothing to do with Sonic Mania, it's referencing an article

I was aware of the article, but this delay has made me not know what to expect at this point.

Despite this setback, I hope for the best. It's otherwise been smooth sailing, I hope it stays that way after this.

  14. Optimization makes something that already works work better. If something doesn't work, it needs FIXING, not OPTIMIZING. If the game has a problem that's such a big deal for a large number of players (remember that the mobile games also didn't work properly on some devices, but the number of customers affected apparently didn't justify delaying them or making them unavailable), it must be a hell of a bug, not just a performance issue. Blaming the delay on "optimization" sounds terribly misleading. I wish they'd at least be honest about the nature of the problem.

  15. Seriously. Lol

I get the frustration, but the outrage is irrationally high

For people saying "but the Sonic 1 and 2 remasters work fine on PC", note that there are things in Mania that use technical trickery in a way that those remasters didn't.

Special stages are the main offender here, but some bosses potentially too.

  17. I haven't followed game releases since... well, I never actually waited for a game to be released before, and never bought anything on launch day, so I figured I'd ask: Are last minute delays a common thing in the gaming world? Does this happen to big games, and if so, what's the typical reaction?

Delays like this are not common. The only real example I can think of was Rayman Legends being delayed two weeks before release to make it multiplatform rather than a Wii U exclusive.

PC games having rocky starts, however, is not. More often than not it either comes out at a later date or has some issues when the game launches. But I can't think of any game delayed three days before launch.

I feel like this is going to be the PC side of the fandom on social media until the Steam release.

I find it quite ironic how people thought the game was getting an early launch when they heard that there was going to be an "important announcement", only for them hearing that the PC is going to be delayed.

So great, now I've got to hide under my spoiler-proof desk for 2 weeks.

Absolutely beautiful, the picture lacks cancelled pre-orders, though.
