The Making of Sonic 3 & Knuckles from Splash Wave (via ResetERA)

No time to watch this yet but ResetERA's saying this is really good. Apparently Splash Wave makes the best documentaries of this kind in existence so thought it was worth the new thread - particularly as many of us here regard Sonic 3K as the best Sonic game of all-time with Mania a close second.

Thought it could also spark an interesting discussion on the game - and wanted you guys to have an awesome video to watch. Love you Retro.

EDIT: Sonic 2 mini-documentary by the same guys here.

Do those have anything new or is it just our research again?

Good point - though I'm not versed enough in Sonic wisdom to correctly recognise any new revelations relative to our extensive research - meaning even having just watched both (thought they were both awesome) I don't actually know if there's anything new. :eng101: We have several members here though who could locate any new info so hope many us do watch these.

They are both more than worth watching. Really well produced and the Sonic 2 one focuses a lot on Sonic's 2 launch so found it immensely entertaining and interesting.

This channel has a lot of good stuff, especially on some lesser known series like Thunder Force (relevant since Sega owns that IP now) and other obscure Genesis games like Alisia Dragoon and Twinkle Tale.

I liked it, had no idea about the design philosophy behind Knuckles' white crescent mark resembling a moon to contrast Sonic's round belly that resembles a sun.

Tails's chest resembles flames. So to Sonic's belly being the sun, Tails is a by-product of the Sun essentially :eng101:
    I wonder if that's intentional too :)

    Another thing that's observed:
-Knuckles. He's nocternal like the moon and like the moon appears sometimes during the day but mainly at night. He's tough like the moon and always watching. A loner by nature, prefers to not be with other planets.
He glows at night, the glow represents the Master Emerald he is protecting which is the last known surviving relic of his ancestors that he vows to protect as a guard and protector of the island.
-Sonic. The sun. He burns hot with his feet and as quick as the sun, shining brightly, gives light, heat, hope. He's always watching during the day.
-Tails. Fire. He wishes to be like Sonic, the sun to shine brightly with a burning desire to be the hero he admires. Starts off small but burns large. Gives light, heat, hope and comfort. (Maybe not a good analogy given fires are dangerous but this is given in a positive sense)

Didn't watch the video, but did they touch on the crescent being similar to the nike logo because someone thought it was a cool design? Because, i thought that was why they used it...

They actually didn't mention that at all. They did however, call the Super Emeralds 'Hyper Emeralds', for some reason.

Nitpicks aside, these mini documentaries are pretty cool, and I love the graphic quality effort put in! There is also one due Sonic 1.

I have no real reason to doubt anything that's said in this video, but... [citation needed]?

Not entirely sure about that claim about 3D rendering becoming 350392483 times better between 1991 and 1994. The major difference from a video game perspective is that in Sonic 1, all the 3D-ness is faked, but by Sonic 3, you could purchase Silicon Graphics workstations and actually render this stuff for realz (although did Sega have any stateside in 1993/1994? It's quite early).

I would argue they just wanted to make things look better. But idk maybe there's a source somewhere that says otherwise.

    Wiki etc.

Well, the guy does thank Kunitake Aoki for answering his questions at the end of the video, so I assume he interviewed him.

Sure would be nice to have that interview archived somewhere.
