From Big Sky's portfolio website (Via Sonic Stadium) Video Doesn't look like much effort was put into this, but still, interesting considering it seems to be something SEGA commissioned. (EDIT: Or it's probably just a really bad sales pitch, nevermind, good for a laugh though I guess)
haha oh god that's unintentionally terrifying. There's ways Sonic could work in VR. A third person god-like view would be good (I'm thinking side scroller)
You really have to work to make something look that ugly in Unity or UE4. I mean, I made this in the span of just a few hours: It also doesn't look like they did anything beyond dropping the OVR/SteamVR camera class into a default 3D character project, threw in some models, and called it a day. There is absolutely no work done on locomotion or anything VR-specific (besides stripping out the lighting). Which is to say, this is super low quality work. And you're probably thinking "no shit." But, like, even for low quality prototypes built for a pitch, this is really low quality.
I thought that my headphones weren't working right with the video being completely silent, only to get the absolute shit scared out of me when an advertisement played right after the video. In all seriousness, though, this barely even looks like a concept, because at least a proof of concept gets the point across of what the game is going to about from a design perspective. This is literally just walking around with some blue abomination for like ten seconds. No explanation for what the point is supposed to be game-design wise besides Sonic in VR.
Can't wait until other places twist this into "Sega makes Sonic VR demo" and this video becomes a new meme so we can all talk about how Sonic was never good in the first place.
Oh no! the video and website on Sonic VR were deleted! Does anyone have backups of the part of the site with Sonic VR and the video?
