This is a new low for you Retro - leaving a Sonic 2 prototype topic untouched for 48 hours. Simon Wai will be turning in his internet grave.

I'm of the theory that there were two Sonic 2 protoypes built for the gaming press between the Simon Wai build, and our Beta 4. The first is "Hidden Palace, Wood Zone, old Casino Night with new sprites", the second is being demonstrated in the second link above (the first link is mostly just text that needs translating and a few press shots).

The telltale signs that there are two is that the earlier prototype uses Sonic's name and icon for Tails in 2-player mode, while this later one uses Tails' icon (but still says Sonic).

Brief things from the above scans:

- Eggman in 2 player mode
- Tails probably losing rings for both players
- Score counter in 2 player mode
- Grey vertical girders/pipe things in the background of Chemical Plant
- Coconuts badnik
- Spike bug?
- Tails can fly
- Final level names
- Aquatic Ruin has badniks

There's a Sonic 2 Game Gear prototype on page 119:
https://retrocdn.net...02.pdf&page=119

- Slightly different title card for Aqua Lake
- blue rings?
- Wrong underwater palette and different tiles for Aqua Lake

Now you know why I had my copies OCRed. :P

I have a hard time getting past how washed out the colors in these screenshots look. Is that just because the quality of 80s/90s era capture cards was not very good? The spike bug being in one of the betas wouldn't shock me since Sonic 2 is built directly on top of Sonic 1, so the quirkier parts of that game would carry over until they got bug fixed.

Other interesting things of note to me is that one of the screenshots used in the Shinobi III promo doesn't seem to be from anywhere within the final game? Is that from the leaked beta? The Phantasy Star IV promotion also has some screenshots that aren't quite like anything in the final game, but those look to be more like mockups to me. Which would make sense, given that Phantasy Star IV has to be super early in development at this time (is it still in its Sega-CD stages?). There's a set of images that looks like it's referring to the point where Chaz gets the Elsydeon and then goes through some flashbacks of the old games, though iirc Phantasy Star III isn't referenced - whereas it is referenced here. The image for Phantasy Star II looks pretty close to the one used in the final game, but the image for Phantasy Star I looks hilariously off to me.

Facinating! So I guess this changed at some point during development for SOR1 GG.

Part of the reason these scans are fantastic is that there is direct capture of gameplay - it wasn't always a given (particularly on handhelds like the Game Gear). The colours are always going to be affected by the printing mechanism and the quality of the printing material (not to mention the scanner, and the fact these magazines are over 25 years old).

Don't forget as well that often there weren't even captures, but photographs of TV screens. Even released games' boxes have been guilty of doing this.

The Chop Chop is green.

One one hand, this means once upon a time it had a sensible underwater palette. But on the other, it would have been a lot harder to see.

That's from the Simon Wai palette. Here's what it looks like when inserted into S2F:
