Did some digging, the license was granted by - I presume - Tom Zito and Night Trap, LLC. after the developer posted a work in progress of the game running on a mobile phone.

The game will also release to Xbox One, though I think the PS4 is getting digital AND physical.

I put myself through footage of Night Trap when beefing up the Sega Retro page a month or two ago. I'm usually up for giving a game a fair chance regardless of age or popular opinion, but this one's a dismal experience.

You need to avoid watching any of the interesting footage to get a decent score, instead being treated to the same two or three guys plodding about in corridors. It's the sort of game that should be in the public domain as a piece of history, not something you should be paying money for, regardless of how much they're stretching VHS footage from 1986.

If nothing else they should really be combining all of this tat. You're not going to get the quality from Digital Pictures' FMV games, so you might as well go for quantity.

Bad news, Tom Zito got back to me saying: "I have no part in it"

Perhaps they lost the rights or the rights reverted to the previous owner when ReVamped failed to get backed.

Did they cut parts of the screen to make a compromise between 4:3 and 16:9?

I'm willing to throw my money at this stupid game. Are the covers reversible? I don't know whether I want the 32X CD cover or the Sega CD cover.

Is it going to say "32X" or "SEGA CD 32X"?

I haven't played Night Trap. I've heard of the name but never knew what it's about and all the controversy it caused. I'm definitely getting this out of curiosity.

The Mp3 main theme sounds good.

One's the US 32XCD release, one's the US Mega CD release. 2 different versions & therefore two different homages for Night Trap.

Wouldn't have killed them for one of those - especially the 32X one, that next to no-one will have played - to have been the EU MCD design, though. >_>

Oh. Could have sworn that the aspect ratio in the trailer looked different than that.

May I ask something? This might seem like a silly question but, why this game?

Yes, I know it was one of the first (if not first) examples of CD technology being used for FMV playback, and yes I also know it caused a lot of "violence" fears (note the quotations please) that caused the creation of the ratings system, but is there an actual valid reason as to why this game is being re-released? You honestly can't tell me these are the reasons to bring back such a crappy game, one that (in my mind) is the reason the Mega CD had a alot of crappy FMV titles afterwards, instead of actual games.

...no, there's gotta be more to this I'm not seeing, I thought I was losing my mind as everyone here so far seemed rather... well not really "excited" per se, but you all seem to be expressing quite a great deal more enthusiasm than I would have expected. Are they paying you behind the forums or something? Are you getting a cut? Have you been brainwashed? What's the secret, you can all tell me~ Come tell your old uncle Jester what's up >=) Are they touching you in a place that makes you feel uncomfortable? Are you being blackmailed? Are the FBI about to jump through my window, and flash a neuralizer in my eyes?

No really though, I am seriously curious, have I missed something?

    Trapped in my own thoughts.
Two stageplays, a screenplay, and an album
Notoriety and novelty value. Same reason Plan 9 from Outer Space got a significant restoration and colorization.

Terrible as it is, this game actually has a significant market:
    • People who are curious if it's as bad as they've heard
    • People who are curious if it's as bad as they remember
    • People who are curious if it is as scandalous as they've heard
    • People who enjoy laughing at bad games
    • People who want to make YouTube videos
    • People who want to look at barely-dressed teenage girls and don't know how to Google the term "barely 18"
    • People who actually like this game Wait, nah, these ones don't exist

The game is rather infamous. That it doesn't live up to that infamy is irrelevant; it *has* that infamy, and so it's something people want to experience, even if they know full well they won't get anything out of it.

If they announce a Sonic '06 4K Remaster people will be as excited about it or more.

Now where is my Rise of the robots re-release

Game is out on the 15th of August, and available to get on Limited Run on the 11th. Interesting features that I didn't know about prior to this and related videos: an endurance mode with random Auger appearances, deleted scenes re-inserted into the game, a cinema mode AND an inclusion of Scene Of The Crime, the original 1986 prototype demo by the same company that made Night Trap!

Jesus christ run 1 went fast. I was on the site at 3pm exactly and got kicked out of the checkout :(/> Had to settle for the PC version instead, which has $22 of fucking international shipping due to the size.

Going to try again for the PS4 CE on run 2, but I'm not hopeful.

EDIT: I did indeed get one on the second try - 50 seconds it took from go-live to order, and they were all gone seconds later.

25 years after Nintendo said it'd never be on one of their systems.... it's getting a Switch port. Limited Run will also be doing a physical release. July, they reckon.

Nice. Also, this reminded me that the PS4 version still isn't released in EU PSN Store. I guess they forgot about it.

So a few weeks ago I spotted the Limited Run packaged edition on Amazon.co.uk. There was only one copy left (for PS4) and I decided to purchase it. I've never played the Mega CD version and I was keen to see what all the fuss was about, why this game caused such a stir back in the 90's. The reversible box-art SEGA CD styled cover which comes with the packaged version is pretty cool.

Despite how bizarre this game is, it's actually really fun. The story is entertaining. Some of the acting is good and some is rubbish, but that's all part of the fun. It's quite clever how you can switch between each room and see a different part of the story playing out.

After countless attempts I finally managed to achieve a perfect run and capture all 100 Augers. This is so hard to achieve. Part of the problem is that a few of traps don't seem to activate reliably (mainly in the living room) and some of the Augers that you have to capture in different rooms are so close - a few seconds between each capture - that you literately have to change screens super quick with no margin for error. It's still a really good challenge.

    I recorded my perfect run:

The delay is something to do with having to add additional languages which has hampered any chance of a European release for PS4 at the moment.
