Hm... after some discussion in #retro, well...

We'll see how this goes down. Not like I had overwhelming positivity on the title, but co-op is still the one area I'm looking at. For better or for worse, this still looks like Episode 1, don't get me wrong.

I'll watch a Let's Play this year, and buy it in 2013 when it's $5 or something. I'd rather play Sonic Fan Remix than this, even if I'm not a big fan of it. The Sonic 4 gameplay formula is enjoyable enough but if I wanted to play Sonic Rush without boosting, that's what I'd go and do.

Before I begin, people who genuinely love Sonic 4 - peace (even though it's shit)! To the rest of you dicks, it sounds like you've all got fucking Stockholm syndrome. You people who go on about how bad/disappointing Sonic 4 is... then say "oh well, I'm going to buy it anyway" are like abused whores who keep going back to their pimp for more abuse.

We've seen the trailer, and we've seen the proof that Sega haven't listened to jack shit. Don't you fucking get it yet? The game you say that you want (that many of us want) we're never going to get because the only thing Sega listens to is money, which YOU keep fucking giving to them.

Get some principles and grow some balls, tell Sega to get fucked and hold on to your money until they come up with something that deserves it!

I'm usually not one to jump in the bandwagon easily and I thought the gameplay trailer was ok.

But Tails won't be playable alone? only selectable in 2P mode?!

This is really disappointing, they're really being more limited than at the times when they were making megadrive games. Thankfully the online/offline co-op makes up for it.

Why so much irateness about Tails not being playable on his own? You clearly play as both characters at the same time, which includes playing as Tails technically. It looks to be entirely designed around having both characteres working at the same time. If you want to play as Tails, then play it with a friend.

And overall I thought it looked OK. Not the faeces that was Sonic 4 Episide I, but this does not look Sonic 4 quality or even similar enough to the older series to be part of it. Seems more like a decent-looking spinoff downloadable.

There are other ways to play this game without giving them money you know.

My PC can't run it and my 360 isn't hacked. I guess you're not talking about me or anyone in my position, then.

So no Sonic/Tails only huh? That's really a let down. They know what people want and yet they don't go the extra mile.

So does that mean we're going to be toggling between characters ala Heroes then? Some of the clips (like the swimming and flying parts) seemed like mandatory areas to pass with tails only...

Also, I guess that means the special stages are gonna be as rage inducing as Sonic 2's.

A general address to people who rant about Sonic 4... only to end with "I'll probably buy it anyway". If that applies to you, feel free to be offended.

It's tempting to say same shit different number but I won't. The level art looks more Sonic like in motion, I still think it looks dull and rather generic though. The level design looks to be the same bullshit from E1, little exploration and lots of automation. I think I'll wait for the game to be under £5 on Steam.

I thought the 2P mode is obligatory because the levels seem to be designed around that kind of layout. How would Sonic get past those flying parts otherwise?

Yeah, that really chaps my balls! They "listen" to our feedback about boosters, homing attack, models, act transitions and mini-bosses, physics and momentum etc... then some complete gay boys arse (probably Iizuka) says "fuck all that, let's make Episode 2 a deviantart weirdos wet dream come true and have Sonic and Tails suck each other off throughout the game".

Fuck you and your "innovations" Iizuka, nobody gives a shit if you can't even get the fucking basics right.

I see. I couldn't tell exactly since your post came right after mine. I certainly wasn't ranting :specialed:

I think a few of use are genuinely mad because they said that they were going to fix shit, Ken even had a load of Sonic fans giving their ideas where Episode 1 failed at and needed improving. Later he made out that a lot of the issues classic fans had with it been addressed and then with seeing the trailer, pretty much get everything we didn't want. If this was going to be the outcome, then what was the whole point of listening to us in the first place.

Well, I for one am not too bothered by Snowy taking more than one hit to beat; I actually expected that in the first place -- I mean, look at him! Tell me that thing looks like it could be felled in one hit.

But really, Dimps? Speed boosters? Could you really not build a level without them?? This makes me rather skeptic about the level design. At the same time, most of what I saw felt rather linear. Not to mention the pointless diagonal spring walls that are a trademark of Dimps level design. Sure, Carnival Night and Metropolis did it, too, but that was one of their level gimmicks; it wasn't in the whole game. And those springs had better not be scripted; you either learn to build a level using springs with a consistent propulsion value, or you stop designing Sonic levels altogether. So, that's strike one.

Maybe I just shouldn't have said anything about the lack of crosshairs, because Derps must have taken that to mean "Oh shit, we forgot to add those!" Let me make this perfectly clear: I didn't need a graphical indicator to tell me when to use the Double Spin in Sonic 3. It's something I had to figure out for myself in order to master it. And you know what? That's okay. So, I don't need any sort of prompt to tell me when to use an attack in Sonic 4 -- a 2D game, no less. In fact, if you need these sort of prompts in the first place, in a platform game, your game probably has more design flaws than you realize. The goal is to make those hints subtle or to have enough clues that the player can easily figure out what to do without flat-out telling them. There are so many games that do this well; this game needs to be one of them.

Honestly, I'm not seeing the point of the Dual Spin Dash yet. While it looks cool, it's just a slightly bigger Spin Dash. Does it do more damage as opposed to separate spin attacks? Would that explain the multi-hit Badniks? Will we be seeing more than one kind of multi-hit Badnik? (I for one would hate it if Snowy was reused in non-ice levels) I did, however, like how the shields melded together when in Dual Spin Dash mode. Would be neat if there was more than one kind of shield in this game; shield combos in DSD mode would be rather neat.

Also, I too noticed that the physics haven't improved. There's no gain in momentum. Plain and simple: just ditch the damned speed cap! This isn't Sonic Advance -- this game is made entirely of 3D models; you've got nothing to worry about by allowing the player to outrun the screen. Strike two.

We haven't heard any music from the game yet, but if it has the same cheap MIDI quality as Episode I, that's strike three. Plain and simple: no more imitation Genesis music (it wasn't even close, anyway). Just make the same quality music that was made for Generations or Colors and it'll be fine.
