(Would've been a missed opportunity for me to not make a thread about this, description is copypasted from SHC17 entry below)

Metal Sonic Rebooted is a complete heavy modification of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that features new art, zones, mechanics, and music that in total acts like an entirely new game.

    STORY:
Robotnik has built an advanced army of badniks to search for the chaos emeralds, and it's up to Metal Sonic to find the emeralds before them by destroying everything in his way to show Robotnik he shouldn't be replaced.

    CONTROLS:
    Spindash - + A/B/C
    Overdrive Attack - + A/B/C (cost 15 RINGS)
Fast fall - tap after jumping. use this to bounce higher by holding the jump button
    V.Maximum Rocket Attack - + A or B after jumping. (cost 10 RINGS)
V.Maximum Rocket Attack (Diagonal) - or + A or B after jumping. (cost 20 RINGS)
Super Transformation - press C after jumping (requires 7 Chaos Emeralds)
NOTE: You can roll (A/B/C ) in midair while on a walking state.

    GAMEPLAY:
    - Introducing Bomb (from Knuckles Chaotix) as a temperory sidekick. explodes into RINGS when hit but destroying the related monitor again will grant you 30 RINGS for keeping Bomb alive.
    - By taking advantage of the amount of RINGS you have, using aerial dashes (V.Maximum Rocket Attacks) will fasten your times. RINGS get saved each act.
    - You start off with 3 Continues in Normal difficulty, but 0 in Hard.
    - Getting hit will only lose 20 RINGS. (Hard Mode is back to zero)
    - All Special Stages are changed, having Bomb will moderately increase the amount of total rings. (except at Hard Mode)

    CREDITS:
KCEXE - Music and SFX ports from various Genesis/Megadrive games
Eduardo Knuckles - Music for Magma Factory (2nd Zone)
    Clownacy - Sonic 2 Clone Driver v2
Dark Sonic - Hardware Testing for v1.1

Nice. I loved Hyperdrive, so I'll make sure to check this out as soon as possible
Do you have any plans for other playable characters ? I know it sound weird, but I loved playing as you and somari in Hyperdrive.

So why does Spiny no longer have its shooting animation when it moves horizontally? It makes it harder to tell when it is going to attack, which results in taking needless damage. The vertical-moving ones still work fine.

Those Special stages are just flat out mean :colbert:

That being said this is a fun hack. I was a bit annoyed when the game froze after the Dark Forest level boss, having collected 6 out of the 7 Chaos Emeralds at that point and having my progress killed right then and there. This was played on an actual Genesis though, so it's possible these bugs don't exist when playing on an emulator. I'll have to give it another shot later on.

Yeah the special stages are a bit sadistic. It did amuse me to see the multi-coloured flashing rings though, I never realised why they were so far from the checkpoints in the original Sonic 2!

Can't say anything about the Special Stages, as Sonic 2 imo is one of two Sonic games I know of where getting the Chaos Emeralds is ultimately pointless except for 100% runs (the other game being Sonic 1 8-bit), or at least too much effort for too little reward, so I don't really go out of my way to do Special Stages. The rest of the hack however is definitely deserving of the trophies it won this year. My favorite feature by far is the ability to turn random items on in single-player (which Lone Devil appears to have dubbed "Lootbox Mode") as it becomes surprisingly easy to rack up lives from monitors, and it provides an extra layer of fun to the stage to smash open any monitor you see and see what you get, and even if you return to a monitor after losing a life, you can still get something else out of it. I just managed to do a Lootbox run in about an hour and a half, and I didn't start having trouble until the Iron Abyss boss, but then again, this was my second playthrough, and the first playthrough will be brutal until you get used to how Metal plays and controls.

This hack is very cool, unfortunately it seems to like to crash at random times when I try to play it on my everdrive. :(/>/>

I haven't used it in a while though so I'm not sure if it's the hack or my hardware that's at fault. Egg Factory ran fine, but that's just 1 level.

EDIT: 90% of the time I see Wood Zone in a fangame or romhack it sucks, but you did a pretty good job with the level design on that one. The Hill Top ziplines really help keep it interesting.

LoneDevil and I have been going back and forth regarding this game running on hardware and I've been testing a few builds for him. There have been some improvements that should be released soonish.

    Version 1.1 Released

    Changelog:
    - Optimization down to 1MB of rom size. (98% of leftovers removed such as 2P mode related data, unused objects and graphics. very little padding to match the exact rom size as original Sonic 2)
    - Options and Continue Screen crashes fixed. (Options might still crash on Regen)
    - Slightly tweaked level layouts, some areas are now straight forward/obvious.
    - Most Special Stages should be a little easier now.
    - Getting Hit will only lose 10 rings.
    - Overdrive Attack (Not_Peel-out) costs 10 rings.
    - Ruins Breakable Blocks collision fixed (no getting crushed from spindashing).
    - Fixed missing Spiny shot anim

Hardware Disclaimer (Tested by Dark Sonic):
A Freeze could trigger after passing through a signpost. (holding right while offscreen increases the chances). the same bug can be replicated in BlastEm.

On a sidenote: This might sound cliche as fuck but I was never expecting to win this year's hacking contest, never have I been this grateful for being able to take part of this community. I like to thank those that voted this hack for Hidden Palace Community Trophy and to those that played my hack to the fullest, enjoyment or not. It has been a wild 1 year ride of development. I don't planned on making any major revisions of this hack because I wanted the contest entry to be the first and last version, until there's oversights. (I purposely don't use beta testers) This should be the final build for now.

Yeah, it did seem to freeze mostly when I finished a level, so that has to be it. I'll just play it on an emulator I guess.

Very surprised it was only a year in development as I thought you had worked on it for more than that as you didn't submit anything to the Hacking Contest for a few years.

My interests were shifted for a few years, I wouldn't want to work on the same hobby for nearly half-a-decade.

I concur with your assessment, Quoted One. May the quotations be with you.

This was a great submission and really conjured some nostalgia with its released-with-the-Gennie look and feel and improvements over Sonic 2 vanilla. Play was crisp and all the 1's and 0's seemed to be in the right place most of the time! The scores were well done and the art was terrific.

Uh. Seems kinda neat for an april fool version, especially the aerial dash momentum change.
