  1. The Sonic Amateur Games Expo Returns in 2017! IMPORTANT UPDATE 9/4

    28 June 2017 - 10:16 PM

HUGE UPDATE! Click here for details! http://forums.sonicr...ndpost&p=908443

SAGE makes its triumphant return on...

    September 30th - October 7th!
For the uninitiated, there's a whole dang page on the Sonic Retro Wiki with SAGE's history here! Make sure to give this year's submission guidelines a thorough read, as a lot has changed this year!

Why should I submit my work to SAGE?

SAGE is an online event specifically made for you to showcase your game-making and/or streaming talents! Make new acquaintances or friends, and to take part in a very creative side of the Sonic and indie gaming community! SAGE submissions are not exclusive to only Sonic the Hedgehog related content. If you have a project to show, submit it!

    Submission Guidelines
    • Game entries must be submitted to [email protected].
    • Each game entry must have a title/logo to display for it's respective game, PNG format, at least 500 x 500.
    • All game entries must be submitted by September 23rd. If your game will not be finished before that time, it will not be featured in the event.
    • ROM Hacks are allowed, given they significantly change something about the games they are based on.
    • Personal web pages that link outside of SAGE, aka ”booths,” are returning this year! Please ensure your booth has at least a description of what your game submission is all about, along with a zip file containing your game. Feel free to include any links to soundtracks, websites, game credits, or miscellaneous information about your entry.
      • When submitting your game, please do not send us your game as a submission. We just need a direct link to the page/site you will be using.
      • Booths do not need to be complex and can be created by any means possible. Feel free to use your own personal server or a free website creator/host, such as!
      • You are responsible for your booth, including hosting and maintenance. If your booth does not contain your game or does not load properly, it will be removed from the games page until it is fixed.
    • Your submission must be a complete demonstration or full release of your game project.
    • If you have multiple game projects to submit, please follow the submission guidelines for each project.
    • Engines are welcome but must follow the same guidelines as stated above.
    • [b]PLEASE NOTE: In respect to both SEGA and the Mania team, during SAGE 2017, we will not be accepting games using OR replicating Sonic Mania assets, including sprites, graphics, music, and sound. No exceptions, your game will not be accepted if you violate this rule.

    Streaming Guidelines
    • To reserve your time for streaming, please send an e-mail to [email protected]
    • You MUST have prior streaming experience. If you cannot present a stable stream, you will be taken off-air, and your time slot will be turned into free time.
    • Each stream entry must have the following:
      • A title or logo to display for your show, PNG format, at least 500 x 500.
      • The name of your stream.
      • The time at which you would like to broadcast your stream.
      • What content your stream will involve.
      • A link to your current stream page.
    • Your stream will be broadcast via SAGETube through a direct link.
    • Stream times are first come, first served and decided by SAGE staff. Should the slot you request conflict with a pre-established stream, we will contact you to work out the best possible alternative time.
    • Streams will be limited to 2 hours per streamer, unless dictated otherwise by SAGE staff.
    • Free-time streams and unscheduled streams are at the discretion of the SAGE staff. If no one is streaming, SAGETube will be running different videos related to Sonic and fan gaming at large.
    • We will do our best to work with and around everyone's schedules. Keep in mind we will have plans in the beginning and end of SAGE, but the rest of the slots will go quick. Make sure to get your submission in as soon as possible!

We've got way more to announce in the coming weeks, so make sure to keep an eye out, and we'll see you in September!
  2. Retro Community Day: Sonic Bash Edition

    06 April 2017 - 05:35 PM

Posted ImageThis Sunday at 8PM GMT (3PM Central), we'll be playing games together with house rules. We're hosting another Retro Community Day on SEGA Channel Retro. The channel reached over 1,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 400 subscribers on Twitch! To celebrate this, we're going to be showcasing Sonic Bash, a hack where two players compete to defeat bosses by landing the most hits. I'll be joining Bartman on the horn as well as Red Hot Sonic the author of the hack.

You will need to download the hack along with Kega Fusion to get yourself ready for Sunday. Luckily you can find this from the hack's old entry page from the 2016 Sonic Hacking Contest. This also features instructions on how to set up Kega Fusion for netplay which will be useful on Sunday. This is going to work differently since there's no dedicated online infrastructure or friend list to work with, so we're going to make use of the Sonic Retro Discord channel to help us out. Fill out this form here with your Discord handle and join the Sonic Retro Discord here so that we can keep track of you. Do this before 7:30 PM GMT Sunday to ensure your chance to play with us. (You can use that time to meet with us!)

We'll have more information on how you'll be able to play with us this Sunday at 8PM GMT. (3PM Central) But here's a checklist to make sure you can join the celebration.

Note about the Sonic Retro Discord: A bot is in place that allows us to see who joins in. You will need to wait for approval before you can post messages in the Discord channel. Keep in mind that it's a matter of when mods are around to approve you. All participants will be approved before the community day starts!
  3. SEGASonic Cotton Candy Shop Arcade

    09 February 2017 - 07:20 PM

    Hey gang,

So I did a wonderful little right up on the front page about SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter Galaxy Patrol getting dumped and released. Someone left a comment underneath pointing out an arcade machine that looks pretty similar to the Popcorn Shop:

Along with another link that's got some info on it in Japanese and a whole image of the thing that I think is meant for the manual.

I dug around the wiki and Google'd a bit and couldn't find anything... is this actually another arcade game that was in the wild and flew under our noses or am I just outta the loop?
  4. RAGE 2016 Act 2

    17 October 2016 - 05:49 PM

    Posted Image

RAGE (Really Amateur Game Expo) is, bar none, the greatest online convention in the history of the internet.

    What is RAGE?

RAGE is a kind of, but not really, game jam, where creators can compete to produce the worst, goofiest fan game possible using whatever tools at their disposal. RAGE has always prided itself in having some of the worst games to ever exist, and since Act 1 went so well, we're bringing it back home to SAGE!

Are there like, rules or something?

    You mean guidelines?

    Yeah, Guidelines.

    • Games need to stick to the theme, this is the most important requirement to note.
    • Submissions need to be in by 11:59 pm Central on Friday, October 21st.
    • Send all RAGE submissions to [email protected]
    • Games should really only be 5 – 10 minutes long. We're not looking for an epic here.
    • Feel free to use any engine/platform/program you like, just make sure it'll run on modern day systems!
    • If you don't have something on hand, there's trials of several commonly used programs, as well as free versions. Less experience might even help you here!
Make sure your game does not start in full screen and will run in a window.
    • Have fun with it! Sure you're shooting for bad, but you're wanting to make funny bad, like The Room or Birdemic of video games. (In other words, you're aiming for humor, not just garbage.)

You have a short time to create and submit your game between there, so get ready to get crackin’! In the past, RAGE has been entirely for bragging rights (if you're into that sort of thing) and making comical abominations. That's all good and fun, but once again, we're bringing back a grand prize for RAGE's first place winner:

    A $50 Amazon Gift Card*!

We'll be holding a livestream where we'll play through every RAGE submission to close out SAGE 2016 on Saturday, October 22nd starting at 8:30pm! Shortly thereafter, the RAGE site will go live so you too can witness the whiteness, with the RAGE winner announced on October 24th.

In case you missed it during the livestream, YOUR 2016 RAGE Act 2 theme is…

We know you saw the 25th Anniversary live stream. You know what to do.

Brush up on your game making skills… or don't! Either way, RAGE is back home at SAGE 2016!
  5. SAGE 2016

    October 15th through October 22nd, 2016

    Da Update (10/8/16)
We are now one week away from SAGE 2016. At this point in time, the staff is currently twisting knobs, duct taping holes, and looking at the site and going “that should probably hold.” While we continue to get things assembled and in line for SAGE's comeback, there's a number of things we'd like to announce and clear up before the 15th.

First off, two hours leading up to the opening of the SAGE 2016 site we will be hosting a livestream of as many SAGE games as we can play. Join us at our YouTube channel, at 10:00 pm central, to see all the games you'll be able to play at this year's expo. I don't want to say all, because we're currently sitting at over 55 entries to SAGE and counting! We will be going past the SAGE launch at midnight and plan to stream until at least 1:00 am.
“Wait, still getting entries? But it's past the deadline!!” Yeah, we aren't hard asses. Listen up, if you were unable to make the deadline for any reason, you can still submit to SAGE up to the 14th. Please note that any entry or update past the 9th is not guaranteed to get a booth at SAGE, but we will do our best to accommodate.
The schedule for livestream events is also available. As you can see… there's not much on it! If you'd like to host a livestream during the week, please send us an email with your stream URL, name, description of your stream, and time slot. Keep in mind that time slots are limited to two hours currently for non-staff events and you must have prior streaming knowledge. Also please note that scheduling can change at the staff's discretion, but we will do our best to notify you in advance should this occur. Otherwise, free time will be available throughout the week if you'd like to stream then!
Finally… RAGE. Is it coming back? What's the theme? Is there another $50 gift card to win???
Well friends, it might be a good idea to tune in on Friday to the livestream to get the answers to those questions…
