Ah man I remember the Genesis III! I thought it was super cool and slick at the time. I take it they're out of production probably forever ago correct?

Since 2001, at absolute absolute latest. More likely since '98-'99.

Not to mention the design never left the USA - I only picked up one for my own set when I was last in the US in 2014.

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
Yup, didn't see one till I was in the U.S. either. Almost snagged it, then remembered I preferred my model 1 at home.

Speaking of, I need to find another one of those one I finish rearranging the furniture in this room.

In fact Tectoy Mega Drive 3s are pretty much like the Genesis 3. The problem is that PAL-M (not PAL) is only used here, so you would need to set your television to PAL-M or open the unit and remove the NTSC2PAL-M converter.

And with the later units they just removed the cart slot and did something different (aka this shitty version) with the same name lol.

I'm almost sure that I've watched one of the reviews of these handhelds (probably by Ashens), where was shown one of the older models of this handheld, where sound was working better than in those "newer" models. Can't confirm it by myself though, first (and only one I have :P) model I've met was probably from 2012 and already had all "standard" features (problems with music in some games, but nice display and graphics).

It's not even especially cheap, the latest models of both stationary and handheld version (those "anniversary") are possible to buy in Poland (preorder) for about 300 PLN (approximately 80$).

Only good thing is that those SMS/GG handhelds from AtGames are far cheaper, and most importantly - everything is working fine in them (display, graphics, sound). If only there could be SD slot though... (I'm not even telling about the slot - proper clone with slot for Game Gear games would be an insta-buy for me).

Something more official from Sega would be preferable to these flawed machines from AtGames. Much like how Nintendo released a NES console I hope Sega does something similar in the near future. I'd buy a Genesis III or IV if re-released on a mass scale one day in a heartbeat.

Oh wow - didn't know or realise! I was under the impression that AtGames was the only option. Thanks for enlightening me. Might pick one of these up.

I have had countless Atgames and whatnot Plug and Play consoles and they all suffer from audio issues. A good usb controller and a laptop does all my megadrive stuff for me now, my console is in a cupboard because I don't want to mod it and don't want to play at 50Hz, Kinda shitty being from the UK in that sense of having the real equipment but it's inferior by design :(/> .

I'm defiantly never buying one. The emulators are way better than this and even better than the original Sega Genesis. Just want to give a heads up that emulators are worth trying and they are even free.

    Trying to be useful somehow.
I still see some of them on stores in my city, but I don't know how much do they really have of Mega Drive. They have cart slot at least, but since I've still got my Genesis II working almost perfectly*, I'm not buying one just for checking.

*Sometimes it boots up on SECAM and colors get reddish and distorted. Also the power plug is broken, but I solved that with a wire of those that close bread's bag.

I'm recently reconsidering a bit my approach to emulators and original consoles. It's relatively fine to play on consoles up from sixth (arguably fifth) generation, but those released earlier are a bit troublesome in some aspects. You know, it stroke me quite strong when I've watched one polish review of Framemeister - buying some additional stuff (sometimes very expensive, like mentioned device) to make games look on your TV(alternatively monitor, but that can be sometimes more complicated) better, up to the moment, when they're looking as good as... On emulators. Then why not use emulator instead? I know that there are always two factors - one is the pleasure with playing on original hardware (that's something purely subjective, and I can't argue with that, it's all up to preferences), second is that someone would like to play "legally" (but in this case, to be honest, I'm starting to think that it's better to spend your money on some dumper(s) and enjoy playing on emulator legally rather than buying expensive stuff to look it better on TV. And I know that downloading ROMS of commercial stuff is illegal, but on the other hand - I can't say that I'm blaming someone for downloading stuff no longer available to buy, which have incredibly high prices on ebay/amazon/stores with retro stuff/etc.

Sadly, far better alternatives are present even amongst chinese clones on AliExpress (and other places where you can buy chinese stuff). Those in last years had some nice metamorphosis, of course there are still very cheap and terrible devices, but there is more and more those, which are more expensive (still reasonable though), but with decent/good quality. Sometimes it's tempting for me to buy and try one of those, can't decide which one buy though :P

So I've seen Everdrives on the net, ebay in particular, if I where to buy one would it play NTSC ROM's at full speed on an unmodded PAL Megadrive or would I then need to import a genesis from the states just to play the ROM's at full speed? I'd be replacing Sonic 3 with Sonic 3 Complete does this run properly on real hardware?

As far as I know, Everdrives are not influenting on the way how games are working on your hardware, so ROM with NTSC version of the game will work on you console in the same way as if you would insert original NTSC cartridge into your PAL console.

And according to my knowledge- you shouldn't have any problem with launching Sonic 3 & Knuckles from Everdrives, that the advantage of this stuff (as well as some bootleg carts :P), that they've got bigger capacity than original cartridges on MD.

The ones he reviewed all had the terrible sound. He sent me one of them (I assume) as some kind of sick, perverted joke.

The Everdrive has a "multi-region" option which attempts to make games with region lockouts playable on consoles from other regions with varying degrees of success, but won't make them play in 60Hz.

Adding switches to a Mega Drive to switch between languages and 50/60Hz isn't hard (although admittedly easier on the MD1 due to the solder pads for the jumpers). Flip the switch and play your games as Sega intended - As long as you connect the console via RGB SCART - some TVs take issue with the signal a PAL MD will push out over RF/Composite in 60Hz mode, because the timings of the signal are obviously not quite what it's expecting... The colourburst gets embedded in the wrong area of the signal and it all gets displayed in black and white.

    More info here

Sonic 3 Complete works fine on real hardware with an Everdrive, with save support, too.

Dunno if you guys know about this, but the Classic Game Console has a flashcart:

I doubt saving works, but if you got the console it would help you get more out of it. Just gotta buy a SD card then.
