(October/2013 Update - Post's bbcode got fucked up when edited the main post, so I decided adding a small FAQ temporarily)

What is 'Sonic the Hedgehog'?
Sonic the Hedgehog is a project we've started way back in 2009 under the name of Sonic Henceforth. Back then it was just another Sonic fangame, following the rules of its universe. In 2010 it went under a whole new design choice. We, the creators, as big Sonic OVA fans, decided to create a homage to that universe, but this decision also gave us a blank canvas to do whatever we want. Sonic OVA's universe never behaved like the normal Sonic universe, there is no master emerald to be seen, Knuckles wears a cool hat, Sonic and Tails both are more agressive and carefree and much, much more. The possibilities were endless and we could've created whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted. Not bound by previous rules. It's a fresh scenario where everything is possible.

What are the changes?
The changes we've in store go from redesigns for some characters to the big stuff, the kind that alters a whole formula. Don't worry, Sonic won't lose his speed neither we're replacing rings for coins or gems. It is still a Sonic game and most of the things in it aren't new for Sonic players. Most of the old things are in it with just a handful of changes or new stuff. You will be treading familiar territory from the beggining to the end, with just some new things in the table.

Is this the OVA game?
No. The game happens after the events of Sonic OVA. Metal Sonic is nowhere to be seen (strange isn't it?), Robotnik ain't trying to marry Sara, and you get the point. This game is based on the OVA's universe, but it's not a retelling of the events in the movie.

Why so secritive about this project? Why not just lay around the story, the changes and everything you got?
Not trying to fill in big shoes, but I'm certain we've an amazing thing in our hands. One thing that I've never really liked in the fangaming community is how people just throw their stories in and make a game about that text that you've probably didn't read at all. We want you guys to care, to speculate, to get caught by surprise about the changes we've made. Not trying to sound narcissist, but I believe we've created the greatest story and lore in a Sonic game. Don't worry, it's a simple and straight foward story without much darker themes or complicated events. But don't sell yourself so short, there is some mindblown for those who get more involved in the game than just for those who just want to play a cool Sonic game.

Why is there so little info about this game?
Being truthfully to you, we've been under some hard times. To start with, we've changed engines from Multimedia Fusion 2 to UDK. So it went some time there into learning UDK (and we're still learning every day something new), crafting our skills. Not only that but we're also working on our free time with a very small team. Progress is slow, but most of it went into making concepts and planning. 3D Sonic games are at the same time easier and harder to make, they just take more time than 2D ones because modeling ins't an easy task. You may sometime spend over a day modeling just a simple asset, then you have to import the asset to UDK, create a material (texture) for it, if it is something special like an ocean with some waves moving you have to do math... you get the point, it is a pain. But once you have it all done, you are all set and it is easy as building something with legos.

I love this project, and I'd love to help
We would love to expand our team. But we also need to see some of your work first. Just PM me with some of your work and let's talk.
We're currently looking for:
- Voice Actors (Robotnik, Amy, Sonic, Tails, Old Man Owl and more to come)
You don't need to make a voice like the one in the original games, we're looking more for an OVA approach. But we're flexible to go both ways. You can also try something new, I'd love to hear your take on this.

- Modelers (Mostly Environment)
Most of our pieces aren't complicated. We're not using some ultra-realistic approach. It's very cartoony and easy on the eyes. Sometimes it's just a few boxes and cylinders, but sometimes it's a bit more than that, but we are never talking about complicated, detailful pieces. All you need to know is how to work with lowpoly and UVWs.

- Riggers
While Sonic will have a very advanced rig, most of the other characters who are not playable don't need such a thing. They do need more than a simple CAT rig because of facil expressions or what not. But that's as far as it goes.

- 2D artists

If you have experience with digital art and know how to paint, you'll do nice. You need to know how to create seamless textures (which is easy, trust me), and setting up normal maps. The harder part of the job is painting itself.

That's all folks.

I had doubts about your Sonic model until I saw it in game; it looks brilliant in action. Reminds me of Mega Man: Powered Up

I'm pretty damn sure Polygon Jim made those Sonic and Eggman models, along with several other models displayed, specifically for Sonic Fan Remix.

Edit: Polygon Jim himself has corrected me. Whoops.

All the bitches.

I made the Eggman model for fun a while back and offered it to both this project and Fan Remix. I have no idea if Fan Remix will end up using it or not though. The Rhinobot was made by me for this project as well.

This is great news. I was really impressed with Henceforth, I'm glad it's still being worked on.

Though, is calling it "Sonic the Hedgehog" a good idea? Imagine if someone tries to google it, for instance. They'd have to either google "Sonic the Hedgehog", which would just bring up information about Sonic as a whole, or they'd have to google "Sonic the hedgehog fangame", which would probably turn up a list of Sonic fangames.

I'd definitely consider a name change.

I'm sure they could just add "fan game" and "3D" as keywords, and find it soon enough, or the project can have a specific keyword as "StH3D" or something.

I love those screens very much, hope to see some levels soon.

This game is actually pretty awesome. I'm sure the engine's changed quite a bit since I last saw it, which only makes me more excited for future, as it's sure to be even better. You gotta love the awesome music this project has been pumping out, it's off the charts. By the way Pedro, I can't help but notice you didn't have a shot of that new, INSANELY sexy blue fire effect for your boost, are you not using that anymore? That shit looked so cool it was absurd.

Also you should post a newer game play video than the one you did, I've personally seen your game show off cooler shit than that, why not post a newer recording to show it off?

(On a side note, I fixed some of your more glaring grammar mistakes Pedro, cause I'm cool like that. For those who don't know, P3DR0 is from Brazil so on occasion his English is written a little funky at times. Since he's ESL, cut him a little slack on the grammar Nazi thing since if you think about it, his bi-lingual skills are pretty damn good.)

Just remembering that the "fire" is constantly moving. :3

About the video, we're just trying to fix some bugs and I guess I'll post something.

Oh man, I totally forgot about this project. I love the visual aesthetic here! A cel shaded sonic is something I've personally wanted for a while now. Can't wait to see more!

While this looks pretty damn sweet, I can't help to think that "Sonic the Hedgehog" for the name of your game creates certain expectations. The visual design on this project so far looks very smooth. :D

I love the outlines, they really appeal to me. Reminds me of the game 'Wario Land: The Shake Dimension', as that had outlines on the player and other things (but I think they were hand drawn sprites).

Looks very nice.

This is brilliant! I love the music it's just a shame that the 3D cell-shaded models aren't going to be used to their full potential, being a 2.5D side-scroller :/
Are you going to make any cutscenes/intro videos using those models?

Pretending to. We just have to create the other characters first, even if they're not at the gameplay they'll show up. :)

This looks promising man. That engine looks awesome. Far beyond most fangames which gives me hope that this will play like a dream. You have shown a massive effort put into this thus far and for that you should be commended. This is definitely something to look out for.

The only negative aspect is the name. I would reconsider calling this Sonic The Hedgehog. This is an amateur move for a project that is so technically capable. It reminds of me of when people would call their games Sonic 4 in the hopes of trying to make the game sound canon to the original series when those games tended to be in the early days and were of particular low quality.

I'll take a shot at naming this for you (as Sonic Henceforth was not a good name either). Perhaps something simple and cool like Sonic SX? (just a random guess there). You need a name that represents the project in an original and meaningful way. I would abandon the current one. It's the same name of two of the most high-profile Sonic games of all-time. Find some distinction.

Otherwise keep it up man. Looking good. I'll listen to some of this music and reply with some impressions. You get a high-five from me.

Considering how godawful both Sonic The Hedgehog (06) and Sonic 4 were, I think that's permission enough for anyone to call their hacks/fangames whatever the hell they want.

Power and respect to you guys, it looks great!

Perhaps. The name Sonic The Hedgehog is still unoriginal though. Shows lack of thought and effort. A shame given the amount of effort applied to the rest of the game.

Guys. I would say the name is unimportant at this stage, since it can be changed easily. Let the team focus on the engine and play mechanics, okay?

How about carrying on the Sonic Colors theme?
