No need to link to a non-working mirror when the original still works. =P

I edited the link to reflect Retro's bit of the piece. I only remember data from CulT so that will live with me until I die lol.

Wonder if the giant rings were not intended to be right next to the sign post at one point.

I'm guessing they just had to choose between having mid-level giant rings and one additional badnik in each level... And they did the right thing. :colbert:

Might explain the placeable giant rings in debug.

^ And kinda how they went back to it in Sonic 3/Knuckles. Like as if they were recycling old ideas.

The warp effect fascinates me. Any speculation on what it could've been? It reminds me of Sonic CD's warp effect after hitting a sign. In any case, I think that while the hidden Special Stage Rings are a great idea and open the game up to exploration, they definitely work better in Sonic 3&K due to the larger levels.

Actually -- I bet the warp affect was probably coming back from the special stage mid level. When they moved it to the end, they didn't need it anymore.

Holy shit that's probably what it was for...

Now I wonder if the lamppost had anything to do with special stages much like the starposts did in Sonic 2... I mean, if they were recycling ideas around, who knows?

That would make some sense. It reuses the 50 Ring pre-requisite. Also, good theory, Hez!

The Sonic 1 warp effect, similar to the one seen in an early Sonic CD screenshot, makes Sonic gradually engulfed in a bigger force field of sorts and makes him disappear for a few seconds, locking his controls... How could that be used when he comes back from the Special Stage?

Perhaps you would originally have been transported to the special stage immediately upon collecting 50 rings, triggering the warp effect in the process. But they realized how intrusive that would have been, so they replaced that method with the giant rings at the end of the act.

That... doesn't answer the quoted text.

Because I wasn't trying to add to the previous suggestion. I was positing, based on your post, that the effect would have been used for entering the SS rather than exiting it.

I don't think the warp affect was ever completed. It was in testing, so it works as it does in the final. Could have had multiple uses as well. But the part when you come back seems very fitting.

Getting 50 rings and being instantly transported isn't an awful theory either. Since that happens in Sonic Chaos (I think) too.
